I don’t like your scales CHAPTER 38

Chapter 38: Probably Can’t Communicate

Fan Yue furrowed his brows, unsure what was wrong with the little demon this time. He reached out, intending to touch him.

But before he could make contact, the rabbit shrank into a ball again.

“…”

Bai Xuci felt terrible. His reaction just now had been pure instinct; he hadn’t even realized anything was wrong until after the fact.

But his soul was fundamentally human!

How had he fallen to such a degenerate state?

The rabbit head tucked in further involuntarily, his two ears helpfully folding over to cover his eyes, effectively shutting out the world.

“What is it?” Fan Yue looked over, a trace of confusion in his brow.

The ball of fluff on the bed stirred at the words. He lifted his rabbit head and said with great sincerity:

“My Lord, I want to transform.”

He spoke earnestly and stiffly, looking very serious and even a little aggrieved.

Fan Yue lowered his gaze to the creature on the bed, remaining motionless, seemingly deep in thought.

His fingers rubbed together slightly…

Seeing no reaction, Bai Xuci thought Fan Yue was refusing to let him transform. Anxious, he hopped right onto the man’s lap.

He was ready to argue his case.

Transforming was clearly his own business, yet every time, this man just “conveniently” changed him back.

It was total disrespect for the rabbit!

“My Lord, you cannot always—” Bai Xuci looked up to complain.

“Hm?” Fan Yue’s attention drifted back as he responded nonchalantly.

His features were picturesque and incredibly handsome, but looking down like that added an inexplicable layer of oppression…

Bai Xuci choked on his words. His rabbit legs felt awkward, and his claws dug in tighter.

Threads were pulled from the black refreshing robes once again.

“…”

Fan Yue took this all in, merely raising an eyebrow without comment.

“Cannot always what?”

Bai Xuci’s initial momentum vanished instantly. Sitting there uneasily, his rabbit head drooped involuntarily as he mumbled slowly:

“You can’t keep turning me back into my original form…”

If this kept up, he really would forget he used to be human.

That would be painful.

Fan Yue stared at the little demon, surprised to see actual dejection in his demeanor.

However…

He knit his brows, puzzled by one question.

“You do not like your original form?” Fan Yue leaned forward, looking directly at Bai Xuci, and used one finger to gently prop up the small head.

Ruby-like eyes stared back blankly, clearly not grasping the situation.

“Huh?” Bai Xuci let out a confused noise.

He just wanted to assert his “rights to independence” and not be scooped up so easily. It wasn’t that he disliked his own body.

Bai Xuci glanced down at his fluffy right leg, then lifted it slightly.

He displayed it.

He found it quite nice, actually. Rather “muscular.”

Of course, that was just Bai Xuci’s own opinion; there was barely any meat on it.

“But This Seat likes it very much,” Fan Yue said again. He didn’t seem to be joking.

Bai Xuci froze, his raised leg stiffening in mid-air. His heart was a mess of complicated feelings.

The original author never mentioned… that the big boss liked fluffy things, did they?

Silence filled the air—

Bai Xuci felt awkward, especially when the Demon Lord said such nonsensical things.

What did “This Seat likes it very much” mean?

Weird.

He quietly glanced up with his rabbit eyes, accidentally made eye contact, and immediately looked away.

He also retracted his leg.

Awkward.

“Why do you not speak?” Fan Yue asked.

Bai Xuci wilted instantly. The melancholy from before vanished, replaced by the struggle of how to converse with the boss.

“Ah, well, it’s not that I don’t like my form, but…” Bai Xuci stammered, trying to articulate his request.

His two ears curved, reflecting his internal conflict.

Fan Yue watched him, finding the little demon truly strange. Since he said he liked his original form, why be so stubborn about transforming?

However…

“It is night now,” came the faint reminder.

Bai Xuci was confused. Why mention the time? What did that have to do with the current topic?

But in that instant, Fan Yue gathered spiritual energy in his palm and transformed him.

The bunny on his lap vanished instantly, replaced by a youth with white hair and red pupils, staring at him in bewilderment.

“Happy now?” The tone was indifferent, yet somehow carried a hint of indulgence.

Bai Xuci didn’t react at first. Then his eyes widened slightly. He looked down at his hands.

Open, close.

Open, close again.

“Mn.” Bai Xuci looked at his hands, feeling a surge of happiness.

See? He was still human!

He couldn’t help but raise his hands higher, his previous grievances evaporating.

Not only could he transform, he could use small spells!

Rounding up, he was super powerful.

Fan Yue watched him, his gaze darkening slightly.

Pretty.

Bai Xuci was so immersed in the joy of being “human” again that he completely forgot… he was still sitting on the other person’s lap.

Just then—

A noise came from outside, and it wasn’t quiet.

Someone was attacking the barrier.

Bai Xuci turned his head back in panic.

His hand instinctively reached out to grab something, like a paw would.

Fan Yue glanced down, took hold of that hand, and looked toward the source of the commotion.

Must they insist on coming inside as guests?

His eyes turned cold.

Outside—

Xiao Yunhe looked pleasantly surprised. He had thought this was just an ordinary cave to hide from the rain, but he had unexpectedly discovered a barrier outside the entrance.

What did that mean?

It meant there was definitely a cultivator inside!

In such a desolate wilderness, finding a fellow Daoist would be excellent; perhaps they could even search for the Crescent Moon Fish together.

“Is anyone there? I hold no malice!” Xiao Yunhe cast a sound-transmission spell, hoping for a reply.

Beside him, Wang Huan looked half-dead but was still stubbornly clutching Xiao’s clothes. He certainly had endurance.

Xiao Yunhe waited a while, but there was no response from within the cave.

He frowned, doubting himself.

Is the cave empty?

As soon as the thought occurred, Xiao Yunhe shook his head. I’m overthinking it.

The barrier was freshly set, which meant a cultivator had just arrived.

How could there be no one?

He slapped the barrier vigorously with spiritual energy again, acting like a reckless youth.

Meanwhile, inside.

Bai Xuci’s face paled. In this situation, he easily imagined some psycho home invasion murder scenario.

He selectively forgot that this was the cultivation world.

“Scared?” A slightly deeper voice resonated.

Bai Xuci snapped back to reality, turned his head, and looked straight into those golden pupils.

He leaned back in a hurry.

Only then did he horrifically realize his hand was being held, and he was… he was still sitting on the man’s lap.

“…”

He finally transformed, so why was his mindset still that of a rabbit?!

Bai Xuci stood up instantly, trying to pull his hand free, and said tremblingly:

“I apologize, My Lord.”

But Fan Yue didn’t let go. He looked at him with slight confusion and asked flatly:

“Why run?”

Standing by the bed, Bai Xuci swallowed. Why even ask?

This was obviously lèse-majesté! He had been in his original form before and thought he was small!

Realizing this only now… it was sheer misery.

“My Lord, I… I…” Bai Xuci felt like his tongue was burning. He stammered for a long time before managing, “I shouldn’t be sitting on your lap, so I got down.”

He lowered his head, awaiting judgment.

His heart raced like a student being scolded by a headteacher.

But the man still hadn’t let go of his hand. It felt weird…

“But you sit on This Seat’s lap often. You never ran before.” Fan Yue said, genuinely unable to understand why the little demon was reacting so drastically.

Didn’t he come over on his own?

Bai Xuci was speechless. He looked up to argue but choked it back.

Forget it, forget it. I can’t explain it clearly anyway.

“Speak.” Fan Yue didn’t like the ambiguity and commanded him to speak.

The little demon in front of him finally showed some expression and explained with difficulty:

“My Lord, that is different. My… my original form is small… it… but after I transform, it is inappropriate…” Bai Xuci explained weakly, trying to sneak his hand back.

He failed and received a warning glare.

He immediately stood obediently, freezing in place.

Even though there were suspicious noises outside the cave…

“What is the difference? Is it not still you?” Fan Yue frowned, thinking the little demon was speaking nonsense.

Wasn’t he the one who always threw himself into my arms?

Bai Xuci was at a loss for words. He opened his mouth, genuinely agitated.

How can it be the same?

When he was a rabbit, he only hopped onto the knee because he was too small and needed to be closer to talk.

But now he was a “person”…

“It is different, My Lord!” Bai Xuci’s mouth turned down; he hated being misunderstood. “If I am a rabbit… my body is naturally small. Anyone can pick me up casually. Holding or petting is inevitable, and it doesn’t mean anything else…”

“But now that I am in human form, it is very inappropriate—”

Before the words could fully leave his mouth, Bai Xuci felt a sudden pull on his hand. His center of gravity shifted.

He fell directly into the man’s arms.

“Anyone can hold you casually?” The voice was low, and the speaker was clearly displeased.

Bai Xuci’s head hit Fan Yue’s shoulder. His captured hand was suspended in the air, his waist collapsed; he was completely immobilized.

“I…” A gasp was forced out of him.

Is that the point? How on earth is he interpreting this?

But before Bai Xuci could refute, he felt his body lighten again. His other hand tightly grasped the man’s robes, and he squeezed his eyes shut in fear.

Then—

He landed steadily in the man’s arms. In a bridal carry.

Bai Xuci: “…”

Okay. Communication is probably impossible.
