Part 2
Everyone except Wen Ying had been integrated into Ping’an Town. Time flowed peacefully, as if they had lived here their entire lives.
Actually, Wen Ying thought it was pretty good. A landowner! The wealth was secondary; the key was having every aspect of her life taken care of by others. This regression to an infant-like existence was, to be honest, very comfortable.
If there was one small imperfection, it was that for breakfast and lunch, Wen Ying still had to return to the Seeking Immortals Sect’s kitchen, as she had promised Wang Goudan. There was no other reason than the fact that she needed the dishes Wang Goudan provided daily. Besides, she could also cook there. Although the Shen family was wealthy, this was just an ordinary small town. Compared to the sect, their kitchen was far too simple.
Wen Ying still remembered the look of utter shock on Wang Goudan’s face when she returned to the sect on the first day.
“Master, how did you…” Wang Goudan’s mouth hung open, his jaw nearly hitting the floor.
“I promised you I’d guide you twice a day, for breakfast and lunch,” Wen Ying said matter-of-factly. “Since I made a promise, I won’t break my word.”
It took Wang Goudan a long moment to close his mouth.
“But Master, aren’t you out on a trial? How did you…” Wang Goudan’s eyes suddenly lit up as he had a thought. “Master, it’s the legendary teleportation, isn’t it!”
“Mmm,” Wen Ying grunted in reply.
“Master is truly Master! So amazing! So incredible!” This time, Wang Goudan’s flattery was completely heartfelt.
Teleportation was a high-level magic art. Practitioners often needed talismans or formations to achieve it, let alone bypassing the sect’s protective barrier… Such a level of cultivation was something Wang Goudan had never seen, not even among the greatest masters he knew!
Wen Ying spat a grape skin onto a nearby plate.
In the previous cycles, Wen Ying had never actually found the true mastermind behind everything. The trial itself hadn’t been important to her then; all she had to do were the tasks given by the system. As she did them, killing a few insignificant beasts along the way, the trial would inexplicably end.
But since she had ended up as one of the ten disciples anyway, she was now somewhat interested in the people and events of Ping’an Town.
For example, her “dead father,” Shen Ting.
In fact, three days ago, when they had just arrived, Wen Ying had been warmly welcomed into the Shen residence by Shen Ting himself.
The next day, Shen Ting had vanished. But in everyone’s mind, the old master of the Shen family had died of illness months ago.
This was definitely not normal.
ใSecond Female Lead in a Sweet Historical Romance, Mission Two: Drop the infatuated act and stop delivering food to Cao Ruobing!ใ
Cao Ruobing, in the setting of Ping’an Town, was the county magistrate. Young, accomplished, and handsome, he was the dream lover of countless young women in the town.
Delivering food, huh…
The system had actually reminded her.
Indeed, previously focused on completing missions, Wen Ying had never been to the county yamen. Such a large yamen, and she’d never visited. What a waste.
As for delivering food… Wen Ying had plenty of food in her sleeves, but she didn’t know this Cao Ruobing. She had no interest in wasting food on a stranger. She wouldn’t even waste a pickled vegetable.
…
Wen Ying headed towards the yamen empty-handed.
She had planned to go straight in, but on the way, she ran into a familiar face.
“Steamed buns, fresh-out-of-the-oven steamed buns, piping hot steamed buns…”
The person selling the buns was shouting listlessly. A glance at the steamer full of large, white buns told her he had been shouting all morning without selling a single one.
And the person hawking the buns was none other than Lu Xiaojie.
In the previous cycles, Lu Xiaojie had always been a background character with no lines. Wen Ying wasn’t familiar with him and had never paid attention to his identity after entering Ping’an Town.
To think… he had become a bun seller.
It was clear Lu Xiaojie was not cut out for business.
After a moment’s thought, Wen Ying walked over.
“Steamed buns, how much are they?” Wen Ying asked.
Seeing someone finally approach, Lu Xiaojie’s eyes lit up. He immediately perked up and enthusiastically introduced his product: “One low-grade spirit stone for one bun, buy three get one free!”
Although it appeared to be an ordinary small town, the currency was spirit stones. But Wen Ying had plenty of those in her sleeves.
“Alright,” Wen Ying nodded. “I’ll take all of these buns.”
She casually pulled a bag of spirit stones from her sleeve and handed it to Lu Xiaojie. She considered it repayment for the manual he had given her.
Lu Xiaojie had been manning his stall for so long, when had he ever seen such a big customer! He fumbled to start bagging the buns for Wen Ying, finally sending her off with a thousand thanks.
Watching Wen Ying’s retreating back, Lu Xiaojie was still filled with gratitude. He didn’t know which family this young miss belonged to, but from the first moment he saw her, he had felt an inexplicable sense of respect mixed with admiration… and now it seemed she was as kind as she was beautiful!
Carrying this large pile of buns, Wen Ying walked down the street. It wasn’t convenient to just stuff them into her sleeve, so she had to carry them all the way to the yamen.
Wen Ying pushed open the yamen gates and swaggered inside. Having to announce herself or anything… was too much trouble.
The guards on either side looked at each other, angry but not daring to speak. After all, she was now the head of the wealthiest family in Ping’an Town. Who would dare to provoke her!
After entering the yamen, Wen Ying had no interest in finding Cao Ruobing. She had intended to investigate the place, but unexpectedly, as soon as she entered, she saw Cao Ruobing working at his desk in the main hall.
Wen Ying had never imagined that in this town’s setting, the magistrate would actually work in the public hall.
The moment Wen Ying appeared, all the bailiffs in the hall looked at her… and the buns in her hands, their faces showing varying degrees of contempt.
This wasn’t the first time the eldest young miss of the Wen family had come to the yamen in the morning. The magistrate had already explicitly rejected her breakfast several times, but she remained stubbornly persistent.
The moment he saw Wen Ying, the smile on Cao Ruobing’s face froze.
He put down his brush, walked over to Wen Ying, and gave her a polite, forced smile.
Wen Ying could see the strain in it.
“Miss Wen, I have told you before that you… need not bring me breakfast anymore. I am truly unworthy of your kindness,” Cao Ruobing said, forcing the words out.
Wen Ying looked down at the buns in her hands and seemed to understand what they were misunderstanding.
“No, no, you’ve got it all wrong. I didn’t come to deliver food. I came to observe,” Wen Ying said, waving her hand.
“Observe?” Cao Ruobing was confused. “Observe… what?”
“Observe this yamen.” Wen Ying gestured at her surroundings.
How could Cao Ruobing not hear that Wen Ying was just making an excuse? And a rather clumsy one at that… who would specially barge into a yamen just to observe it?
It must be just like before. If he didn’t accept this breakfast, she wouldn’t leave.
“Fine,” Cao Ruobing sighed. “Miss Wen, I will accept the breakfast you brought today.”
A powerful dragon can’t crush a local snake. Forced by Wen Ying’s status, even as the county magistrate, he was helpless against her.
Wen Ying looked at the buns in her hand and suddenly thought Cao Ruobing’s suggestion wasn’t half bad. Keeping these buns in her sleeve would just take up space. She couldn’t throw them away and waste food. Giving them to Cao Ruobing was an excellent idea.
“Alright.” Wen Ying handed the buns over.
Cao Ruobing took the buns back to the main hall, but seeing that Wen Ying still had no intention of leaving, he had to sigh again. It was always like this… she wouldn’t leave until she saw him eat the breakfast she prepared.
He had no choice but to take out a bun. Although it felt a bit strange in his hand, he still forced himself to take a small bite…
“Oww!” Cao Ruobing couldn’t help but let out a low cry, clutching his front teeth and hissing in pain.
Was this a steamed bun? Was this really a steamed bun?! Was this not actually a rock?!!
The bun fell from Cao Ruobing’s hand, landing on the desk with a loud thud.
Wen Ying had guessed that the buns Lu Xiaojie made wouldn’t be very tasty, but for them to be this hard…
All she could say was, that’s Lu Xiaojie for you.
