Chapter 64: The Sixty-Fourth Day of Slacking Off
Meanwhile, down the mountain in Peace Town.
“Did Wen Ying order all of my remaining newspapers again today?” Li Xiangyue asked the delivery man.
“Yes, that’s right,” the delivery man said with a congratulatory tone. “Congratulations, Proprietor Li, business is booming!”
“Alright, I understand.” Li Xiangyue gave a polite smile and pointed to a stack of wrapped newspapers. “The papers are over there. Thank you for making the delivery.”
Li Xiangyue’s cultivation depended on the sales of her newspaper, so she would naturally never refuse a customer.
That’s right—though Li Xiangyue appeared to be just an ordinary person in Peace Town, only she knew the truth. She was a cultivator, and her path to immortality was paved by writing news and selling newspapers.
But…
For more than ten days straight, Wen Ying had been purchasing such an enormous quantity of newspapers from her. No matter how you looked at it, the situation was bizarre.
Li Xiangyue’s initial impression of Wen Ying hadn’t been very strong; she only knew her as the protagonist who frequently appeared in her articles. With Wen Ying out of town these past few days, she had lost a major source of material.
Perhaps because of this, her newspaper sales had taken a noticeable downturn.
But Li Xiangyue had a good attitude about it.
The worst that could happen was a slowdown in her cultivation. As a reporter, her most important duty was to report the news truthfully.
And then, as if performing an act of charity, Wen Ying had started buying her newspapers nonstop, and in unexpectedly massive quantities.
After seeing the delivery man off, Li Xiangyue walked back to her desk and sat down.
Spread open before her was a novel she had bought to improve her writing: My Overbearing CEO and I.
The page she was on described a scene where the female lead was being harassed by a manager, who was demanding she sell an entire crate of vases.
Just as the heroine was at her wit’s end, the male lead appeared.
He was the wealthiest man in the city, the owner of half its shops, and thus, people respectfully called him the “General Manager.”
This domineering General Manager was the “Overbearing CEO” from the novel’s title.
The male lead extended a hand, pinning the female lead against the wall. “Heh, woman. I’m buying every single vase in this shop.”
Could it be…
Li Xiangyue glanced at the spirit stones Wen Ying had given her, then back at the book.
The wealthiest man in the city, the wealthiest person in Peace Town…
All the vases, all the newspapers…
Could it be…
Was this another case of “Domineering Landlord Falls for Me”?
Wen Ying asked for spirit stones a few more times, but it was still having no effect.
If that was the case, then only one possibility remained.
Her speculation was true.
All the spirit stones in town flowed from this mountain stronghold. In other words, this place was essentially the source, like a money-printing press.
Although she didn’t know how Lin Ruge’s parents managed to make their supply of spirit stones so inexhaustible, if this place really was a money printer, then of course they wouldn’t be concerned about any amount of spending.
But if that were true, why did Lin Ruge’s mother look like she was biting her tongue every time Wen Ying came to get spirit stones?
Wen Ying soon found out the answer.
The very next day, Lin Ruge’s mother held a banquet, saying she wanted to thank Wen Ying.
By this point, Wen Ying knew her plan had failed. But if there was a banquet, of course she was going to eat!
At the feast, besides a table full of delicious and fragrant dishes, there were also small plates of sweet pickled garlic. Wen Ying had noticed Lin Ruge’s parents liked it, so she had given them some of her own. Since then, they had eaten at least one clove with almost every meal.
Upon seeing Wen Ying, Lin Ruge’s mother once again grabbed her hands, her voice filled with emotion. “Yingying, you are truly my lucky star, and the lucky star of our entire stronghold!”
“Huh?” Wen Ying looked at her, confused.
“A long time ago, my mother told us about a certain type of person, those with a ‘collector’s obsession,’ who love to collect things and feel terrible if they can’t. Back then, my sister and I were determined to see such a person with our own eyes,” Lin Ruge’s mother said excitedly. “And you, it turns out, are exactly the kind of person she was talking about. Though my sister and I are now separated, at least I have fulfilled the dream we shared back then…”
Wen Ying: “…”
So that sappy family story from before wasn’t even over yet.
“And… Yingying, I know that people with your obsession treasure their collections. But for the sake of our residents, you made such a huge sacrifice…” Lin Ruge’s mother’s eyes welled up with tears again.
“Huh?” Wen Ying looked at her, even more confused.
“You knew that the people in our stronghold don’t like to read, so you placed your collected newspapers by the outhouse entrance. When people are… occupied in there, they get bored and can’t help but look for something to read. They’ll naturally grab one of those newspapers and start reading. The articles are simple and easy to understand, so they get drawn in,” Lin Ruge’s mother said gratefully. “My husband, Ruge, and I have always been worried about the literacy level of our people, but we never imagined such a brilliant solution! Thank you, Yingying! You’ve helped us solve such a major problem!”
Wen Ying: “…”
So, was now a good time to mention that her original intention for putting the newspapers there was for people to use them to, uh… wipe?
