Chapter 21: Those Supplements Were Given to Him by Shen Xingyu
The old butler had already been waiting at the entrance.
Seeing Shen Xingyu approach, he stepped forward with a face full of smiles. “Young Master, Young Madam, you’ve finally arrived!”
He instinctively noticed Liang Sheng’s panting state and asked with concern, “Young Madam, why does your complexion look a bit off?”
“It’s… it’s nothing. I probably just got car sick.”
Liang Sheng gave a strained smile. He was indeed a bit dizzy; being pulled along by the man had been too much for him.
The butler looked worried. “Then come into the living room and rest for a bit! Eat something sour to settle yourself.”
Shen Xingyu shot a glance at the person beside him. He indeed saw an abnormal flush on his face, but he didn’t pay it any mind. Instead, he asked the butler:
“Is Grandpa asleep?”
“Not yet. Normally he’d be asleep by now, but since he knew you were coming, he’s been waiting in the living room. Young Master Jiang is keeping him company with chess and tea!”
The old butler chattered on.
Shen Xingyu wasn’t surprised that the young master of the Jiang family was also at the residence; he figured the other was waiting for him.
The butler led them through archways and corridors toward the main hall.
This was a traditional courtyard house with a classic atmosphere.
Flowers, plants, and trees were planted all around, and the walls were made of red bricks.
In the middle of the courtyard was a pond.
The water was clear and transparent.
Though it was night, the moon was very round and bright. Its reflection in the pond made the entire courtyard look transparent—hazy and peaceful—quite different from the raw, natural scenery outside.
Liang Sheng couldn’t help but look a few more times. In a daze, he remembered the days when he worked here as a part-time gardener during university. It was also here that he first met Shen Xingyu and learned he was the Young Master of the Shen family.
After so many years, the Shen residence hadn’t changed. The flowers of all four seasons were still there, and even that begonia was still in that corner.
Unfortunately, the man who had once cast aside his status to huddle in the garden with him and discuss various plants would never return.
Liang Sheng let out a sigh, his heart filled with melancholy. He hadn’t thought about these things in a long time, yet at this moment, he suddenly felt a wave of bitterness.
“Don’t sigh. You’re about to see Grandpa.”
The man’s low-voiced threat sounded above his head.
Liang Sheng quickly pulled himself together and quickened his pace.
Su Nian had a long face the entire way. He was very dissatisfied that Shen Xingyu had ignored him. Clearly, back at the Shen villa, he could be intimate with the man openly. Why was he being ignored now that they were at the old family home?
Was he that shameful to be seen?
If you asked him, Shen Xingyu should just tell the Old Master clearly that he didn’t like Liang Sheng and wanted a divorce so he could marry Su Nian instead!
Su Nian glared resentfully at Liang Sheng, who was walking close to Shen Xingyu. He gritted his teeth, having already cursed Liang Sheng a thousand times in his heart.
“Hurry up. Keep up.”
Seeing Su Nian suddenly stop, Qin Lou urged him, wondering what the other was muttering about behind their backs.
“I know.”
Su Nian replied impatiently.
The old butler gently knocked on the wooden door. “Master, the Young Master and Young Madam have arrived.”
“Come in.”
A powerful, aging voice came from inside.
The butler slowly pushed the door open.
A thick scent of traditional Chinese medicine hit their noses.
Su Nian felt like he was going to vomit.
Liang Sheng, conversely, couldn’t help but worry about the Old Master’s health.
Shen Xingyu’s hand, which was gripping Liang Sheng’s thin wrist, shifted to wrap around his waist, pulling him close to his chest.
Liang Sheng was startled. He frowned at him, only to see the man giving him a silent warning with his eyes.
Liang Sheng knew that if he said anything he shouldn’t in front of the Old Master, the consequences would be dire.
Only then did Shen Xingyu feel at ease as he held the other’s slender waist and walked into the living room, calling out filially:
“Grandpa.”
“You’re here!”
The Old Master sat in a wheelchair. Seeing them arrive, he quickly put down his chess piece and said with a spirited smile, “Quick, quick, sit down.”
While gesturing for them to sit, he also ordered the servants to prepare fruit and snacks.
“Is your leg better?”
Shen Xingyu sat down and asked. Seeing that the Old Master’s complexion was ruddier than before, he felt relieved.
“Much better! I’m taking medicine every day to recover. It’s just that I still can’t move around much, sigh.”
The Old Master patted his leg and said helplessly.
“A broken bone takes a hundred days to heal; it will get better.”
Shen Xingyu comforted him. His expression was still somewhat plain; he wasn’t one to over-express his feelings.
“Grandpa!”
Liang Sheng, on the other hand, became very enthusiastic. He bowed slightly as he called out, his smile gentle and sincere. The happiest thing tonight was definitely seeing the Old Master; the fatigue of the day was nothing in comparison.
“Eh! Sheng-sheng is a good boy. Come sit by Grandpa’s side and let Grandpa see if you’ve gotten thin.”
Old Master Shen’s eyes were kind as he gestured for him to come over. He was very fond of this grandson-in-law he had personally chosen. Plus, with Liang Sheng’s auspicious birth chart, he favored him even more.
Liang Sheng instinctively wanted to go over, but he froze his steps, afraid his husband would be angry. He looked up to seek permission.
He didn’t know when he had become such a fool who had to ask his husband’s opinion for everything.
“Go on. Have a good chat with Grandpa.”
Shen Xingyu nodded. He spoke the last part lightly with a smile, but Liang Sheng heard the other meaning—the man was telling him to watch his words.
He bit his lip and walked over nervously.
Jiang Chuzhou’s gaze swept over the beautiful brother-in-law with the well-defined figure. He then stood up and sat beside Shen Xingyu, habitually wrapping his arm around the man’s neck. As soon as he opened his mouth, he spoke with sarcasm:
“If I had known you were coming, I wouldn’t have come~”
“Then you can leave.”
Shen Xingyu coldly brushed his hand off. Although he wasn’t particularly warm toward this young master of the Jiang family, he didn’t dislike him either.
Jiang Chuzhou was probably the only friend he’d had since childhood that he couldn’t drive away!
“Hey, how can you be like that! I’ve been waiting here since early morning. Did you bring me any gifts?”
Saying that, Jiang Chuzhou excitedly dug through his coat pockets, but unsurprisingly, he found nothing.
“No.”
Shen Xingyu patted down the wrinkles on his pocket.
“You’re too stingy! At the very least, this young master is your childhood friend!”
Jiang Chuzhou curled his lips casually. His silver-gray hair made him look wild and unrestrained. Every movement was full of the carefree nature of a profligate, playboy young master.
“Young Master Jiang is considered a person of status in Nanshi; I’m sure you aren’t lacking any gifts.”
Shen Xingyu tilted his mouth up slightly. He seemed to be smiling, yet he was difficult to get close to.
“Tch~”
Jiang Chuzhou turned his head away arrogantly, just in time to see Su Nian standing beside Shen Xingyu. He asked curiously:
“And this is?”
“Secretary.”
Shen Xingyu replied expressionlessly.
“You kid changed your taste again? He looks very sweet, hiss~”
Jiang Chuzhou licked his back molar, studying Su Nian with ill intent and excitement in his eyes.
Su Nian knew he was the young master of the Jiang family, so he waved at him familiarly and smiled sweetly.
The Jiang Group was the largest tourism conglomerate in Nanshi. To be able to know and be friends with Young Master Jiang was practically like a pie falling from the sky. Naturally, he wanted to seize the opportunity.
“Scram. Don’t get any ideas about him.”
Shen Xingyu lowered his voice and gave a cold warning.
“Stingy bastard. This master doesn’t want him anyway! Too girly. I still like the ones that are hard to conquer.”
Since he couldn’t have it, he’d insult it—Jiang Chuzhou’s usual style. Shen Xingyu was too lazy to argue with him.
Conversely, Su Nian’s face darkened when he heard those words. He hadn’t expected this young master to speak of him so poorly!
Unfortunately, in the face of the insult, he could only maintain a smile. His heart was filled with hope that Shen Xingyu would defend his dignity, but the man did nothing at all. He felt a surge of discouragement, but quickly brainwashed himself that Shen Xingyu just didn’t want to expose their relationship in front of Old Master Shen.
On the other side, the Old Master held Liang Sheng’s bone-thin arm and asked with heartache, “Sheng-sheng, you look much thinner. Is the food over there not to your taste?”
“No, no!”
Liang Sheng quickly shook his head and explained with a forced tone, “I eat a lot every meal. Maybe it’s just a fast metabolism!”
“How can a fast metabolism make you this thin? You’re clearly malnourished.”
The Old Master saw through his lie at a glance and turned to blame Shen Xingyu: “Xiao Yu, your wife has a poor appetite, and you didn’t even think of a solution. You should have had the kitchen make some appetizers.”
Shen Xingyu looked at Liang Sheng, who had found a good backer, and felt a bit foul-tempered. However, he still explained gently, “We did, Grandpa. It’s just that Sheng-sheng doesn’t like them. No matter how I coax him, it’s useless. The kitchen made sour plum soup several times, but he secretly poured it out.”
How could that be…
Liang Sheng looked at him in surprise, only to see the man’s gaze was freezing. That pressuring look was like an invisible shackle, forcing Liang Sheng to go against his own heart and follow the lie: “A-Yu had them make many appetizers for me to eat, but I… I just didn’t like them.”
By the end, he was on the verge of sobbing. Fortunately, he managed to hold it in. He really wanted to tell Grandpa that he wasn’t eating well at all. Every meal was bland, and he was forced to eat spicy food. His husband restricted everyone’s portions and forbade eating after mealtime; he was often woken up by hunger in the middle of the night…
But he couldn’t say it. If he did, Shen Xingyu would be implicated, and he would be in trouble.
“Silly child, why didn’t you tell Grandpa? Come eat at Grandpa’s place.”
Old Master Shen acted like he was coaxing a child, affectionately patting his head. He asked again, “By the way, did you eat those supplements I sent you?”
“Ah… supplements?”
Liang Sheng was a bit confused.
“You didn’t receive them? I remember telling Old Zhang to send them.”
The Old Master looked at the butler again.
The old butler quickly replied, “Master, I sent out all those supplements you prepared one by one. The logistics show they’ve been signed for.”
Su Nian, however, smirked triumphously.
Those supplements were signed for by him under Shen Xingyu’s orders. But they had already ended up in his stomach.
Naturally, Shen Xingyu had given them to him to nourish his body. How could a bitch like Liang Sheng be worthy of eating such expensive things?
Liang Sheng inadvertently saw Su Nian’s sly smile and instantly understood where the supplements had gone.
His heart was filled with both rage and pain.
Shen Xingyu spoke up to clear the Old Master’s doubts: “Grandpa, they were received. It’s just that Sheng-sheng had a cold recently, and the doctor advised against taking other supplements.”
“Sheng-sheng, how did you get a cold? Are you better now? It’s the change of seasons; you have to take care of your health!”
The Old Master patted Liang Sheng’s hand and urged him.
“I know, Grandpa. You too…”
Liang Sheng replied with a bright smile, but his voice held an imperceptible tremble.
How could Grandpa know that he was actually sick?
Translator’s Note: Ugh, Su Nian is so brazen! Eating the supplements meant for Liang Sheng… and Shen Xingyu is just letting it happen. Old Master Shen is literally the only person in this family with a heart. My poor Sheng-sheng~
- Supplements (補品): These usually refer to high-end traditional health products like bird’s nest, ginseng, or cordyceps, which are very expensive and seen as a sign of care in Chinese culture.
- Malnourished (營養不良): This is literally “nutritional deficiency.” It highlights how much Liang Sheng has suffered under Shen’s neglect.
