Chapter 25: It Was Nian-nian Who Saved Me
Su Nian immediately put on a look of joy as if he were crying with relief. He sat by the bed with sparkling eyes and asked in a soft voice, “President Shen~ how are you feeling? Do you have any discomfort anywhere?”
With Su Nian’s support, Shen Xingyu slowly sat up.
Su Nian’s clean, soft voice calmed his inexplicably irritable mood. He rubbed his temples and turned his head, his brow furrowed and his lips still somewhat pale:
“What do you mean, ‘finally awake’?”
Su Nian felt guilty, but his talent for lying was innate. With a worried gaze, he explained tentatively, “You drank a lot last night and kept vomiting. I couldn’t wake you no matter what.”
Shen Xingyu’s movement of rubbing his forehead paused. He looked at him with half-belief. Seeing that Su Nian was about to cry, he couldn’t help but remember that when he had a bit of consciousness last night, he had been vomiting. Could the person he vomited on have been Su Nian?
“Yesterday… did you take care of me all night?”
He asked, his voice somewhat hoarse.
As expected, he had bet correctly.
Shen Xingyu hadn’t woken up all night.
So he didn’t know who had been by his side.
Su Nian felt a secret joy in his heart. With teary eyes, he nodded and stood up to pick up the bowl of hangover soup.
He was very sensitive to smells and immediately recognized the ingredients added to the soup. He was even more confident of victory now.
“President Shen, come, open your mouth. I added lemon and honey; drinking this can relieve your headache.”
Su Nian scooped up a spoonful, blew on it gently, and diligently brought it to the man’s lips.
Shen Xingyu instinctively shrank back slightly. He didn’t like being fed by others; it didn’t feel secure.
But looking at Su Nian’s sparkling eyes full of expectation, and considering the other had worked hard to care for him all night, he finally bit the spoon and drank that small mouthful.
This taste…
Shen Xingyu’s brow furrowed slightly. He suddenly found it very familiar, like the hangover soup Liang Sheng had made for him before.
Seeing him drink it, Su Nian was incredibly happy. He scooped up another spoonful to feed him. As long as he could stay by the man’s side and do even a tiny, intimate thing for him, it was a great happiness and recognition.
“I’ll do it myself.”
Shen Xingyu took the bowl and had a small sip himself. He felt the taste was quite good, so he had a few more sips.
Su Nian watched as he finished the entire bowl of hangover soup in one go. Although he was smiling, his heart was twisted with jealousy. Is the stuff brewed by that little bitch named Liang really that good?
He had often made food and soup for the man at the company before, but he had never seen the other eat much of it.
Yet he was enjoying a bowl of hangover soup with great relish!
As long as it was related to Liang Sheng, he couldn’t help but compare and compete in every way. He wanted to prove he was a thousand, ten thousand times better than Liang Sheng!
After finishing, Shen Xingyu wanted to hand the bowl to him, but he accidentally noticed his expression was a bit strange. Although he was smiling, there was no warmth in his eyes.
“Nian-nian, what’s wrong with you?”
He asked in a deep voice. He had never seen Su Nian show such an expression in front of him before.
Su Nian shuddered, hurriedly coming back to his senses. He met the man’s probing gaze uneasily and quickly replied:
“No… nothing. I probably just didn’t sleep well.”
He had almost lost control of his emotions because of Liang Sheng…
“Mm. Then go back and have a good sleep. You worked hard last night. I’ll give you a raise.”
Shen Xingyu patted his shoulder, like a boss treating an employee, without any extra emotion.
Su Nian took the bowl from his hand and was stunned, somewhat shocked by the man’s behavior toward him.
Why… a raise?
Why wasn’t it a public announcement of their relationship to the media? Or even a gift would do! Instead, it was those three cold words: “give a raise”!
He always felt vaguely that as long as Liang Sheng was present, Shen Xingyu would be particularly gentle and passionate toward him. But if they were alone together, Shen Xingyu turned cold and distant.
Su Nian couldn’t understand why this was. He could only pull at the corners of his mouth awkwardly, his smile stiff. Although he was unhappy in his heart, he still had to shake his head gratefully on the surface:
“President Shen has already been very good to me! You promoted me to this position; how could I dare ask for another raise!”
“Then what do you want?”
Shen Xingyu looked up at him, his voice calm.
“I…”
Su Nian hesitated. Of course, he couldn’t directly say he wanted to marry the man and be the Young Madam of the Shen Group. He could only gaze at Shen Xingyu with eyes full of tenderness and say considerately:
“I don’t want anything. I only want to stay by President Shen’s side forever and share your burdens.”
Shen Xingyu’s pale lips curled slightly, and a light laugh escaped his nose. His arrogant gaze held a trace of approval:
“Good. I like those who are loyal and honest.”
Just as he finished speaking, he suddenly felt a pain in his chest. He instinctively raised his hand and gripped it tightly, leaning down and gasping slightly.
“President Shen, what’s wrong?!”
Su Nian was startled and hurriedly stepped forward to support him, looking at him with concern.
“It’s nothing…”
Shen Xingyu let out a heavy sigh. Once the residual pain vanished, he looked down at his left chest, then looked up and asked, “Last night… did my heart attack flare up again?”
Su Nian hadn’t expected him to suddenly ask this. But fearing he would be discovered as not having been there at all last night, he hurriedly nodded and began to pretend to recall the images from last night, even stuttering as he spoke:
“Yes… yes! It scared me to death! President Shen, your face was as white as paper at the time, and your whole body was trembling!”
“And then?”
In his stupor, Shen Xingyu remembered someone feeding him medicine and sweet honey water.
“And then…”
Su Nian was breaking out in a sweat, his mind racing. His eyes suddenly caught sight of the medicine box on the table. He immediately looked as if he had seen a savior, took the medicine box, and continued with a serious air:
“And then I found the heart-saver pills in the cupboard and fed them to President Shen. Only then was your life no longer in danger!”
Shen Xingyu didn’t go on to ask about the honey water. He assumed Su Nian remembered his habit of liking honey preserves when taking medicine, so he took his hand and gave a rare, earnest, gentle smile:
“Thank you, Nian-nian. I didn’t expect you to save my life once again.”
“Why are you thanking me! Anyone else would have done the same!”
Su Nian’s gaze was very candid—bright and pure—giving people a sense of sincerity and kindness.
Through those eyes, Shen Xingyu seemed to see that person again, and he couldn’t help but be in a daze.
“Nian-nian saw President Shen in such pain last night and was truly… so scared. Scared I would never see you again… boohoo! You shouldn’t drink in the future!”
Su Nian continued to talk with added flourish, his voice tinged with the sound of sobbing. Tears flowed down, a piteous sight.
“I won’t. Don’t cry; I won’t die that easily.”
Shen Xingyu stroked his head.
“It’s Nian-nian’s fault for not stopping President Shen from drinking last night. I only thought that since we finally got away from work, I wanted President Shen to have a few drinks to relax. I didn’t expect it would almost harm you…”
Su Nian bit his lower lip, his hands wringing the hem of his clothes. His eyes blinked, and tears rolled down accordingly.
“It was me who didn’t control myself. Don’t blame yourself.”
Shen Xingyu said with heartache. He couldn’t bear to see those eyes shed tears, yet he also liked seeing them look so pitiful.
“Mm! Nian-nian doesn’t want to lose you!”
As Su Nian spoke, he seemed to catch a glimpse of Liang Sheng coming into the room from the corner of his eye. The next second, he threw himself into the man’s arms, tightly hugging his waist and pressing against his chest, crying piteously.
Liang Sheng saw this scene, and the wet towel he had just prepared for the man to wipe his face dropped to the floor.
His pupils shrank, and his heart began to ache faintly again. He said in a trembling voice, “What… what are you two doing?!”
Su Nian pretended to be scared out of his wits, hurriedly letting go of Shen Xingyu and looking at Liang Sheng. He explained with helplessness, “Young Madam… you… don’t misunderstand. I was just too sad… so I hugged President Shen.”
He spoke of his affair so grandly, even wiping away tears with a sense of grievance.
Liang Sheng cast his gaze toward Shen Xingyu. Seeing him awake and well, he suddenly didn’t know whether to be happy or sorrowful. He could only quietly wait for his answer.
Seeing his swollen eyes, Shen Xingyu felt a wave of panic for no reason, but he quickly recovered his composure and said indifferently, “You should knock before entering. It’s so rude.”
Hearing this, Liang Sheng couldn’t believe the other would say such a thing. He bit his lip hard and pointed at Su Nian with a sob: “The rude one… is him, isn’t it? This… is the room for the two of us.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! It’s my first time at the Chairman’s house; I didn’t know this room belonged to you and President Shen. Young Madam, please don’t be angry; I’ll leave immediately!”
Su Nian quickly took the opportunity to apologize, his tears falling in piteous drops, taking all the blame upon himself. One wouldn’t know he wasn’t the true victim.
Liang Sheng stood frozen in place without moving. In the face of Su Nian’s acting, he was the villain.
Shen Xingyu reached out and pulled back the Su Nian who was making a show of leaving. Naturally, he couldn’t bear to let go of this little lover who was completely obedient and could act cute and spoiled. He then gently patted the side of his bed:
“Sit down. You don’t need to mind him.”
“That’s not right~ I wouldn’t dare.”
Su Nian looked at Liang Sheng with timid eyes.
“I told you to sit, so sit. You cared for me all night; you must be exhausted, right? There’s no need to fear what others say.”
“Mm~”
With a flush on his face, Su Nian sat down obediently at the man’s bedside, his lips curling into a mocking arc.
Liang Sheng opened his eyes in shock, saying in disbelief, “He… he cared for you all night?”
Su Nian’s heart jumped, deathly afraid Liang Sheng would expose his lie. He could only try his best to remain calm and said with grievance:
“I know the Young Madam has always not wanted me to be alone with President Shen. But last night I saw President Shen was quite drunk, and the Young Madam had gone upstairs in a huff. Fearing President Shen would catch a cold from the alcohol, I took the initiative to bring him back.”
He spoke with such an air of truth that Liang Sheng was first shocked, then his lips twitched, and he was laughed from anger.
“A-Yu, do you believe what he’s saying…?”
He turned to look at Shen Xingyu with a final shred of hope. He had stayed up all night caring for this man; it was impossible the other hadn’t sensed anything. Shen Xingyu must know it was him!
“Of course I believe it~”
Shen Xingyu replied without a second thought. He pulled Su Nian close to him, looking at the shy person in his arms with tenderness.
“When my heart attack flared up, it was Nian-nian who saved me and stayed by my side without leaving. Conversely, where were you all night? Probably busy thinking of how to contact your lover, right?”
When he looked up at Liang Sheng, his face had changed back to a cold expression, his eyes full of loathing and disdain.
Liang Sheng let out a bitter laugh.
He should have known this would be the result.
Translator’s Note: I am LITERALLY screaming! How can Shen Xingyu be so blind? He literally vomited on someone and he thinks it was Su Nian? And the “lover” comment… he’s still obsessed with Doctor Xie. My poor Liang Sheng.
- Give a raise (漲工資): This is so typical of a “cold CEO.” He treats feelings like a transaction. Su Nian hates it because he wants the title.
- Heart-saver pills (救心丸): A common fast-acting TCM pill for heart episodes.
- Pearl-like tears (眼淚撲簌簌): A descriptive phrase for heavy, rapid crying.
