Chapter 45: Anyone Who Didn’t Know Would Think He Married A Stutterer
Public opinion shifted instantly under Jiang Chuzhou’s superb acting, and onlookers began pointing at Su Mu.
“You, you… what nonsense are you talking about! Who’s your mother?”
Su Mu panicked and angrily pulled her hand back. “Don’t listen to his nonsense! I don’t know him at all!”
“Mother! For Brother’s sake, you actually want to sever our mother-son relationship! You’re so cruel, waaaah!”
Jiang Chuzhou wailed with snot and tears. While wiping his eyes, he peeked at the onlookers. Seeing they were fully convinced, his lips curled in a successful grin. He wailed even louder and even kowtowed to Su Mu.
The commotion drew many people.
A dense crowd of onlookers gathered.
Su Mu, who always extorted others, had never encountered this kind of situation. The young man kneeling in front of her was like a mad dog, biting her and refusing to let go. The pointing and the strange looks from the onlookers made her extremely humiliated.
Qin Lou looked at the wailing Jiang Chuzhou at his feet in disbelief. He was stunned. He had originally wanted to have Su Mu forcibly dragged away, but once Jiang Chuzhou got involved, he didn’t know what to do.
“Mother! I beg you, don’t treat me like this! As long as you let me come home, I’ll definitely be filial to you!”
Jiang Chuzhou was hysterical, looking incredibly wretched. Anyone who didn’t know would think he had suffered a great grievance.
He seemed to be enjoying himself and had no intention of stopping, which gave Qin Lou a massive headache.
The onlookers were very sympathetic.
“This guy is so pitiful…”
“Yeah! His mom is really a piece of work!”
“Brother, go to court and sue her! Stop acknowledging this kind of mom. It’s better to earn your own money and live your own life!”
“I can’t do that, waaaah… She gave birth to me and allowed me to come into this world. I still have to repay her for that. My scoundrel brother stopped acknowledging her once he got rich; my mother only has me left…”
Jiang Chuzhou shook a tissue and blew his nose. The onlookers even shed tears, praising him for being truly filial.
Qin Lou couldn’t take it anymore. He kicked the person on the ground and said in a low voice, “That’s enough.”
The acting was too fake!
Jiang Chuzhou squeezed his eyes at him, signaling that he wasn’t done yet!
The onlookers’ accusations made Su Mu’s head feel like it was about to explode. She screamed, ruffled her hair, and looking at the still-slandering Jiang Chuzhou, she was both anxious and angry. She scrambled up and lifted her foot to kick him.
Qin Lou quickly stood in front of Jiang Chuzhou, pushing Su Mu down, and said to the bodyguards, “Take her away.”
Jiang Chuzhou sat calmly on the ground. Looking at the tall figure standing in front of him, his lips curled up. He felt a secret thrill; he had guessed right—Qin Lou really would protect him. He didn’t even have to dodge.
Two bodyguards went up, grabbed Su Mu by her arms, and forcibly dragged her away.
“Let go of me! You dare treat me like this? I’m going to tell Niannian and have him fire all of you!”
Su Mu shouted, struggling non-stop, her mouth spewing foul insults.
Qin Lou raised his hand to disperse the onlookers:
“It’s over, everyone. There’s nothing more to see.”
Jiang Chuzhou stood up, wiped away his worthless tears, and slowly walked to Qin Lou’s side. He rested his elbow on the man’s shoulder, raised an eyebrow, and gave a very annoying smile:
“Have you thought about how to thank me, Handsome Qin?”
Qin Lou pushed his hand away, brushed the spot where he had been leaned on, and looked at him with a puzzled expression. “Why did you do that just now?”
“An eye for an eye. Don’t you understand that?”
Jiang Chuzhou looked at him as if he were an idiot.
“Don’t you find it embarrassing? With so many people around.”
Qin Lou frowned. The thought of Jiang Chuzhou sitting on the ground like a three-year-old wanting candy—throwing a tantrum, crying, and making a scene—made him shudder. He certainly could never do such a thing in his life.
“Tch, I’ve done things much more embarrassing than that! One more doesn’t make a difference.”
Jiang Chuzhou shrugged indifferently. He didn’t feel any shame at Qin Lou’s questioning.
Qin Lou glanced at him with disdain and instinctively stood two steps away, as if afraid of catching something from him.
“Wait, I helped you, and you’re actually disgusted by me?!”
Jiang Chuzhou realized what was happening. He hopped in front of him, pointing at his own nose and glaring.
He was so close that his deep eyes and playful face seemed to glint under the moonlight. Qin Lou’s heart suddenly skipped a beat.
He immediately backed away, coughing awkwardly into his fist, not daring to look at Jiang Chuzhou. He said stubbornly, “I didn’t need your help.”
“Listen to that! Just listen! Are those human words?”
Jiang Chuzhou laughed in anger and slapped him hard on the shoulder:
“If I hadn’t helped you, you would have been extorted to death by that old hag! The best way to deal with someone like that is to give them a taste of their own medicine! To think you’re a bodyguard for Brother Yu, you’re so brainless! You’re making me so mad!”
Qin Lou ignored his tantrum. He then turned his body slightly and said coldly:
“Calling someone else ‘Mother’ so casually is disrespectful to your own mother. Aren’t you afraid she’d be unhappy if she knew?”
Hearing this, Jiang Chuzhou was stunned. His machine-gun-like mouth was suddenly at a loss for words.
He lowered his gaze, his long eyelashes hiding the emotions in his eyes. Only after a long silence did he give a self-deprecating laugh:
“Heh… my mom? My mom died a long time ago. She’ll never know.”
Qin Lou was surprised. His crossed arms instinctively relaxed. Seeing the sadness in his eyes—an emotion he had never seen in this normally heartless person—he was momentarily flustered.
“You…”
He opened his mouth, not knowing how to offer comfort.
Jiang Chuzhou looked up. Seeing him looking at him with that pitiful expression, he felt very awkward.
“Hey, hey, hey! Why are you suddenly getting so sentimental! Don’t go digging for information! I’m not telling you anything!”
He shouted to cover his embarrassment.
His incoherent attempt to act impatient made Qin Lou feel a bit guilty.
He had originally wanted to criticize Jiang Chuzhou’s behavior as unfilial, but he hadn’t expected this.
“I’m leaving!”
Jiang Chuzhou gave an arrogant huff and quickly turned away, not wanting Qin Lou to see the real tears in his eyes.
What’s there to cry about? So pretentious!
He scolded himself in his heart and left with a forced air of calm.
Qin Lou watched his departing back, seemingly able to understand his feelings across the distance.
After all… he didn’t have a mother either.
…
Su Nian’s speech on stage was excellent—poised, dignified, and with a sunny smile.
The audience was full of praise, and the applause was continuous.
Even the Old Master, who had always been indifferent to him, had to nod in satisfaction at his presentation.
Liang Sheng, however, felt even more inferior.
He stole a glance at the man sitting beside him. Ever since Su Nian stepped onto the stage, his gaze hadn’t moved once, and there was even a faint smile on his lips.
Everyone… seems to really like Su Nian.
Yes, after all, he is knowledgeable and eloquent; of course people like him. Whereas I don’t know anything, and I’m even afraid to speak to others.
Liang Sheng lowered his head, his fingers pinching the corner of his clothes, a strong sense of frustration welling up in his heart.
It would be his turn soon. Although he had prepared a speech on the way here, the thought of going up on stage made him uncontrollably nervous.
The speech finally ended.
Su Nian bowed to the crowd in thanks.
Su Rao: “Thank you, Secretary Su, for that wonderful speech! Next, let us use enthusiastic applause to welcome Mrs. Shen to give us a breakdown of the Shen Group’s latest product, Twilight Murmur!”
As her words fell, the venue erupted in thunderous applause.
They couldn’t wait to see Mrs. Shen—the one who had been married to Shen Xingyu for many years but was appearing for the first time. What kind of powerful person could marry the young master of the richest family and stay married for seven years!
Liang Sheng was still lost in thought and didn’t hear Su Rao calling him. The audience waited for a while, and seeing no sign of the Young Master, they began to whisper.
Shen Xingyu helplessly uncrossed his legs and then nudged the dazed Liang Sheng, warning him in a low voice:
“Hurry up. It’s your turn. Don’t embarrass me.”
Liang Sheng snapped back to reality. Hearing that it was his turn, he was very panicked. He instinctively cast a look for help toward the Old Master, hoping he would save him.
The Old Master sitting in front, however, only nodded at him, signaling for him not to be afraid and to believe in himself.
Liang Sheng bit his lip and had no choice but to stand up and leave the table.
Su Nian happened to be coming down from the stage. As he passed the head-bowed Liang Sheng, he shot him a look of contempt, walking with his head held high.
Liang Sheng seemed to feel his strong provocation. Though unwilling to back down, the deep-seated cowardice in his heart made him unable to confront this imposing person.
The applause died down, and everyone’s eyes were fixed on Liang Sheng.
The scrutiny coming from all directions made Liang Sheng’s heart race.
Having finally forced himself onto the stage, he looked up to see a dense crowd of people. Countless eyes were waiting to see him make a fool of himself.
What do I do? What do I do?
I’m afraid…
His legs began to shake uncontrollably.
Seeing him shaking like that, Su Rao was surprised that someone could be even more socially anxious than her. She looked at him with pity and handed him the microphone, encouraging him in a small voice, “Young Master, don’t be afraid. Just follow the script.”
“Mhm… thank you.”
Liang Sheng took a deep breath, then faced the crowd below. He gripped the microphone tightly and spoke: “G-good evening, everyone! I am… Shen Xingyu’s wife, Liang Sheng. I am v-very happy…”
He was stuttering so badly it took him a while before he could continue: “To m-meet everyone!”
He almost squeezed those last two words out of his throat. This wasn’t the result he wanted. He had practiced hundreds of times in the car, but facing so many people, he was still terrified.
Shen Xingyu frowned, clearly dissatisfied with Liang Sheng’s performance. How could he be trembling like this?
Anyone who didn’t know would think he had married a stutterer.
The gaze of the audience also turned from anticipation to doubt.
They couldn’t believe this was Mrs. Shen.
Although he was indeed prettier than the celebrities present, he was lacking in terms of temperament and ability.
He couldn’t even compare to a secretary!
Listening to these doubts and belittlements, although Shen Xingyu remained expressionless, he was already burning with rage.
Liang Sheng made him feel like he had lost face.
Why could he eloquently talk back to him in private, yet once he was on a public stage, he couldn’t even say a single sentence?
He was truly someone who only knew how to act tough at home…
Su Nian’s eyebrows rose high, filled with indescribable triumph.
