Chapter 9: President Shen Had a Heart Attack
Shen Tingwan was truly terrified after taking those two lashes from the whip. Even though she was ten thousand times unwilling in her heart, she turned her head to look elsewhere and apologized impatiently:
“I’m sorry.”
Only then did Shen Xingyu curve his lips in satisfaction. He looked at Liang Sheng as if nothing had happened and extended his hand toward him:
“Alright, Sheng-sheng. She was beaten and she apologized. Let’s go home.”
Liang Sheng pressed his lips tightly together. He didn’t place his hand into the man’s palm, merely looking at him quietly, his eyes full of disappointment and resentment.
It was like this again.
For seven years, Shen Xingyu had never grown tired of this trick.
The other party would apologize from a high and mighty pedestal, and he, Liang Sheng, was forced to give him a way out, forced to accept it humbly.
Was he going to let himself be led by the nose again this time?
But, he really didn’t want to play along with him anymore.
This feeling of being coerced made him feel like he was suffocating.
“Sheng-sheng.”
Shen Xingyu called out again tirelessly.
He smiled. He didn’t ask crazily who the man hugging him was, nor did he expose him; he merely waited patiently for his answer.
The man reached out his hand. His warm and genial appearance made Liang Sheng feel as if he were seeing the time in his sophomore year of college all over again. When he was being bullied and everyone avoided him like the plague, only Shen Xingyu was willing to reach out and pull him from the abyss.
He yearned for that gentleness from Shen Xingyu, that warmth that gave him hope when he was at his most helpless.
Thinking of the feeling of being protected and pampered in the past, Liang Sheng’s heart ached densely, and his eyes began to show signs of wavering.
His fingers hanging by his side curled slightly. For a moment, he wanted to hold the man’s hand, but memories of those lonely nights waiting in the villa for a person who wouldn’t return suddenly flashed through his mind, and he immediately suppressed the urge.
“I’m not going back.”
Although Liang Sheng’s voice trembled, it carried an unquestionable resolve. He stepped back into the house and shut the door without hesitation.
Shen Xingyu’s face immediately darkened.
He didn’t block the door like he did earlier. Instead, he stood in silence, his tall and slender figure exuding an invisible, cold sternness amid the light and shadows.
“Brother! He didn’t even appreciate it, and you actually hit me for that bitch! Wuwuwu! I hate you!”
Shen Tingwan was furious. She rubbed her eyes with both hands and ran out crying.
The plastic wrapping of the bouquet crinkled loudly as Shen Xingyu squeezed it. He stared at the tightly shut door, his gaze sinister and entirely mad.
Liang Sheng…
He would never give up!
Not in this lifetime!
But he didn’t want to force the other party to leave with him right now. Forcing was no fun; he wanted Liang Sheng to do it willingly!
Shen Xingyu snorted coldly and tossed the roses into the trash can.
“Let’s go.”
“President Shen, are we just leaving like this? What about the Young Madam…”
“He won’t forgive me anymore… us staying here will only make him hate me more…”
Outside the door, the man spoke forlornly.
Liang Sheng froze, his back sliding down against the door panel until he was sitting on the floor.
That was a tone he hadn’t heard in all their years of marriage. Self-blame, sadness, and seemingly a trace of grievance.
His husband was always indifferent; only seven years ago would he reveal such emotions to him.
Could it be… he recovered his memory?!
Liang Sheng was both shocked and overjoyed. He hurriedly scrambled up, grabbing the doorknob to open it, but the image of his dead mother suddenly surfaced in his mind.
His mother’s suicide couldn’t be blamed on anyone else. It was his fault for not watching over his mother, for not properly sorting out his husband’s birthday in advance. He only blamed himself.
But Shen Xingyu made him miss his mother’s funeral; he shouldn’t forgive him…
Thinking of all this, Liang Sheng silently lowered his hand and rested his head against the doorframe. His heart felt as though an invisible hand were fiercely squeezing it; every breath tore out sharp pain.
Right now, he really wanted to run out and see if Shen Xingyu had truly regained his memories, even if he only remembered a little bit of his love for him…
He had truly waited for this moment for far too long.
Outside, Shen Xingyu didn’t seem to have any intention of pushing the door open. Liang Sheng only heard the sound of footsteps fading away, inevitably making him grow anxious.
He hoped his husband would knock again. If he just knocked one more time, he would be willing to go back with him.
Seven years of living day and night together; even if it wasn’t a happy life, habit and emotion couldn’t be discarded so easily.
Liang Sheng knew he was acting overly abnormal these past few days. Because of his mother’s passing, he finally unleashed his first temper after enduring silently for seven years.
If his husband had comforted him and understood him right then, how wonderful it would have been. Now, this apology came far too late, so late that he couldn’t even push open this door and say the words ‘I forgive you’.
The sky outside the window had cleared up.
But inside his heart, the long rain continued to fall.
He didn’t know how long he sat on the floor, but until his legs went numb, Liang Sheng finally supported himself against the wall, stood up unsteadily, and began to tidy up the messy living room.
Stinky socks were thrown everywhere. The dirty sofa, coffee table, teacups, and other clutter filled the entire room, along with a pile of trash.
He found it somewhat hard to imagine how Xie Zhengran managed to live amidst this pile of foul-smelling stuff.
Even though that guy looked clean and fresh on the outside, who would have thought his private life was this sloppy.
Liang Sheng frowned helplessly and bent over to mop the floor.
While doing chores, his mind habitually wandered, and he couldn’t help but think of the way Shen Xingyu had apologized to him earlier.
Liang Sheng suddenly felt that he was truly pathetic. After all these years, he still fell for his husband’s tricks. It worked every single time, especially seeing how terminally softhearted that face made him.
When his mother was alive, he still had a family. Now that his mother was dead, and his younger brother hated him to the bone, it seemed he truly had nowhere else to go except his in-laws’ home.
After seven years as a house husband, he had long become detached from society.
Liang Sheng sighed heavily. Just as he distractedly turned around to change the water, violent pounding suddenly rang out from the front door.
Startled, he hurriedly set down the water bucket and ran to the door. Instead of opening it immediately, he asked tentatively, “Who is it?”
His heart thumped wildly, not knowing if it was out of hope that his husband had returned to pick him up, or something else…
From outside came Qin Lou’s anxious voice: “This is bad! Young Madam! President Shen just had a heart attack on the way back! He’s been rushed to the hospital for emergency resuscitation! Please hurry over and see him!”
“Maybe… you can still see him one last time…”
Hearing those words, Liang Sheng’s face instantly drained of all color.
He opened the door in a panic. Seeing Qin Lou standing outside with completely red eyes, he finally believed it was true. His legs immediately gave way, his body swayed, and he nearly collapsed, fortunately being caught swiftly by Qin Lou.
“H-how could he suddenly have a heart attack when he was perfectly fine?”
Liang Sheng asked, choking back sobs. His hands tightly gripped Qin Lou, and without realizing it, his eyes were already wet.
Even though he held a myriad of resentments against his husband in his heart, in the face of life and death, he was truly terrified. Moreover, the other party had developed his heart condition as a result of saving him; this made him feel even more guilty.
Qin Lou shook his head, his face solemn: “I think it might be because President Shen thought you didn’t want him anymore. He was too heartbroken, and his heart gave out as a result.”
“H-hurry, take me to see him!!”
Liang Sheng didn’t want to wait another second. He ran anxiously toward the stairs. He had already lost his mother; he didn’t want to lose his husband too.
These two people were the ones he loved most in his entire life.
As Qin Lou watched his slender back, the panic on his face completely vanished, replaced by his usual cold indifference.
He casually wiped away the eye drops from the corners of his eyes, then picked up his phone, placed it to his ear, and reported flatly:
“He went over.”
Liang Sheng ran to the side of the road, but looking back, he didn’t see Qin Lou follow him.
He was puzzled for a couple of seconds, but he had no time to overthink it. Terrified that he really wouldn’t get to see Shen Xingyu again, he quickly flagged down a taxi and got in.
His heart was in his throat the entire way.
When he finally got out at the hospital entrance, Liang Sheng was so anxious that he lost his footing and fell heavily into a mud puddle by the side of the road!
“Ugh…”
He let out a muffled groan. His elbows and palms were scraped raw, but ignoring the pain, he scrambled up miserably and ran into the hospital.
The hospital was bustling with people. Liang Sheng didn’t know where Shen Xingyu’s ward was for a moment, and he was on the verge of crying from anxiety.
People around him cast strange looks his way.
Liang Sheng wiped the muddy water from his face, stumbled toward the nurse’s station, and asked through his sobs:
“H-hello, where is Shen Xingyu’s ward? Has his surgery… finished?”
By the end of his sentence, his entire body was trembling.
The nurse was also startled by his wet and filthy appearance. She quickly searched on the computer and replied: “In Room 402. Mr. Shen’s surgery just finished.”
“O-okay, thank you…”
Liang Sheng turned and stumbled away.
He had always thought he was strong enough, but he never expected that ever since his mother passed away, his heart had become exceptionally fragile. If his husband left too, he really wouldn’t be able to go on living…
The closer he got to Ward 402, the more terrified Liang Sheng became. Images of his mother lying motionless on the hospital bed kept surfacing in his mind, only to be seamlessly replaced by his husband’s face.
His eyes grew wet, his footsteps slowed from a run to a walk, and then he dashed madly into the room.
Upon seeing the white cloth draped over the raised figure on the hospital bed, covering it from head to toe, Liang Sheng’s heart jolted violently.
He staggered over to the bedside, his eyes staring straight at the figure beneath the white cloth. His gaze was hollow and lost, as if his soul had been sucked out of him.
How could this be?
Didn’t they say the surgery had just finished?
Could it be… the surgery failed…
An unbelievable sense of collapse swept through his entire body.
He was perfectly fine just an hour ago, apologizing to him at his door. How could they be separated by life and death the very next time they met…
Liang Sheng’s lips trembled slightly, but he couldn’t make a sound. Tears swirled in his eye sockets and finally rolled down in huge drops, splashing onto the snow-white sheets.
He reached out his hand, wanting to lift the white cloth, but froze mid-air. For a long time, he couldn’t summon the courage.
He was afraid. Afraid of seeing his husband’s pale face; afraid of seeing his husband’s cold corpse.
“Y-you… you said you would always stay with me… why did you just die? Sob~”
Liang Sheng let out a suppressed, broken sob.
He went completely limp, collapsing onto the floor and draping himself over the edge of the bed. Right now, there wasn’t a single trace of resentment toward Shen Xingyu in his heart; there was only the agony and self-blame of loss. He wept so hard he couldn’t even speak clearly, choking out every word:
“I-I’m not mad at you anymore, please don’t lie here like this, okay? I’m scared… I’m begging you… I’ve already lost Mom, I can’t… I can’t lose you too… Please wake up, okay? I’ll go home, I’ll be perfectly obedient…”
