Chapter 4: Interesting but Dangerous
The terrifying buzzing sound rang in his ears again. The execution robot appeared before him once more.
Bai Mu watched as the robot extended its mechanical arms. No calibration, no positioningâa bright light flashed before him, and a particle beam pierced straight through his eyeball. His eye was instantly stained red with blood, and bloody tears streamed down his face. Those particles were like invisible needles, drilling into his nerves and moving deep into his brain.
It hurt too much!
That wasn’t a pain a fragile human body could endure.
This can’t happen. I can’t be reformed!
He broke free from his shackles and ran out of the torture room for his life.
Three bailiffs chased him, bullets firing continuously. He ran regardless. His eyes were blurred with blood; he could see nothing. He fumbled, falling and getting up again. Hurried, dense footsteps echoed behind him, carrying the angry breath of a strong Alpha bailiff.
Bai Mu was tackled to the ground. In his pupils, dilated with terror, he saw the bailiff’s enraged, distorted face. The man crudely pressed his head down, dragging him back toward the torture room. Bai Mu fought with everything he had, but he was still shackled back to the mechanical chair. The bailiff pressed the execution robot’s start button again.
“Can’t be reformed… can’t be reformed…”
Bai Mu muttered, his breathing rapid. He knew this was a dream, but no matter how he struggled, he couldn’t escape the nightmare. Sweat soaked his clothes. He wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
“Hey… wake up…”
Fear, pain, dizzinessâall emotions and perceptions converged into a single point. Reality and dreams collided violently because of that low call, exploding in his mind. Bai Mu snapped his eyes open.
Encountering bright light, Bai Mu instinctively turned his head to hide. A moment of daze followed, then he seemed to come to his senses. He scrambled to sit up, looking at the person before him in terror.
His consciousness returned, and his vision cleared. Bai Mu finally saw that the person before him wasn’t a crude bailiff, but… he sounded uncertain: “Consul?”
Han Naijin was sitting sideways on the edge of the bed. The Omega was very close to him; he could clearly see the tiny mole at the corner of his eye and the curl of his eyelashes. Of course, the Omegaâs wary and panicked expression was also laid bare.
Han Naijin held a torn-open wound repair patch in his hand. He said softly, “A nightmare?”
In that brief exchange, Bai Mu found his fleeing logic. His body leaned back slightly. Aside from his sweat-dampened hair making him look a bit disheveled, he became flawless again.
Bai Mu looked down at himself. He wasn’t bound, and beneath him wasn’t a cold mechanical chair but a soft mattress. His dirty clothes had been changed. Bai Mu scanned the roomâit was a simple guest room, but the door and windows were equipped with alarm systems. If someone tried to force their way in or out, it would trigger micro-weapons. So, this room was actually a comfortable-looking cell.
Han Naijin remained very calm, still holding the wound patch.
Bai Mu didn’t answer Han Naijinâs question directly. Instead, he asked weakly, “Officer, where is this?”
Han Naijin looked at him and said flatly, “This is the Han Manor. Itâs also where the government operates.”
Manor? Government?
Bai Mu weighed Han Naijinâs words. He guessed this must be where the Consul lived and worked. So, he hadn’t been sent to a shelter but was brought back to the Consulâs residence. A sliver of joy rose in Bai Muâs heart, but the windowâwhich occasionally flashed a red alarm lightâreminded him he wasn’t a guest or an innocent victim, but a suspicious person of unknown identity.
A surge of pain came from his shoulder. He only then realized his wounds had been cleaned. The treatment was very professional. Looking at the repair patch in Han Naijinâs hand…
Had the Consul done all this for him? Looking at the clean clothes, he wondered if the Consul had changed him, too.
Thinking of this, a faint blush appeared on Bai Muâs face.
Han Naijin clearly had no time for his thoughts. He said naturally, “Thereâs one more wound on your shoulder. Once the patch is on, you can be sent to the med-pod.”
Hearing this, his earlier joy vanished. What happened after the med-pod? Where would he be sent? The development of events was becoming unpredictable, and he truly couldn’t gauge the thoughts of this expressionless Consul.
He slowly moved toward Han Naijin, gently pulling his collar aside. The bright red wound on his shoulder sat across his collarbone, contrasting sharply with his fair skin. Even so, it was an incredibly seductive Omega body: porcelain skin, flat and slender neck, and the beautiful curve of his throat as he tilted his head back. Two butterfly-wing shoulder blades trembled slightly.
Moreover, his body was still uncontrollably leaking pheromones at a concentration far above normalâa scent no Alpha could resist. Yet, Han Naijinâs eyes held nothing related to desire. Those narrow eyes were like a deep pool, clear and cold, with an invisible bottom.
He desperately needed to know the Consulâs plans for him, but the man clearly had no intention of telling him. He could only try to gather information from the Consulâs few words. He asked tentatively, “Officer, will I still be in danger?”
Bai Muâs eyes shone with a clear light, looking pure and harmless. It was hard to link this image with someone who had strangled a strong Alpha in a few moves.
Han Naijin finished peeling the patch and said casually, “Were you in danger before?”
His tone was as natural as discussing the weather or enjoying afternoon tea, rather than two people with their own agendas engaging in a battle of wits.
Bai Mu pretended not to understand. He said worriedly, “Iâm afraid those people will come looking for trouble again. You saw me being cornered and beaten, didn’t you?”
“I saw those people bullying this Omega.” The Consul had said those words himself in front of the crowd. If he didn’t admit it now, it would be like slapping his own face.
The conversation was calm, but a strange, unspeakable emotion was quietly brewing in the air.
Han Naijin finally looked up from the patch to glance at Bai Mu. He raised an eyebrow. Those Alphas indeed had vile intentions toward the Omega. He had seen the Omega struggling and felt a momentary pang of pity. He didn’t consider himself a good person, but for some reason, a surge of kindness had come at an inappropriate time.
He just didn’t expect his impulsive sentence would be used by this Omega to counter him. Han Naijin narrowed his eyes, studying him openly. “Thereâs one thing I don’t understand. Can you answer me?”
Bai Mu gave a bitter smile. “Officer, if even you don’t understand, how could I?”
“Since you had Flying Eagle protecting you, why did you insist on my help?”
Han Naijinâs gaze didn’t leave Bai Muâs face for a second. Bai Mu was observing him, and the other man was likewise gauging his thoughts and actions.
Bai Mu made a perfectly timed expression of confusion. “Officer, I don’t know anyone from Flying Eagle.”
Han Naijin said no more. He reached out and placed the patch on Bai Muâs wound with speed and precision, his fingers never touching the skin. An disheveled Omega was right before him, yet the Consul wasn’t swayed in the slightest.
Bai Mu looked down. The medicine brought a cooling sensation. He thought for a moment and then asked, “Officer, how do you know he didn’t want to kill me?”
Han Naijin said lazily, “Why would he want to kill you?”
Bai Muâs heart sank. Loose lips sink ships. Whether Flying Eagle wanted to protect or kill him, it proved his identity wasn’t simple.
Bai Mu sighed, looking innocent. “I really don’t know that person. Maybe, like he said, he was just there for the show.”
Bai Mu was very gentle, even obedient, in his questions and answers. But he felt the Consul across from him hadn’t lowered his guard at all.
The patch was set. Bai Mu readjusted his collar. They sat in silence, looking at each other. The air began to solidify, pressing down on Bai Mu until he could hardly breathe.
This lasted for ten seconds until Han Naijinâs light computer rang. He walked to the window to take the call.
Bai Muâs gaze followed Han Naijin. The manâs silhouette looked well-proportioned and powerful; every muscle was perfectly balanced. His profile was also flawlessâa high, straight nose and a perfect jawline. Bai Mu wondered if he was being blinded by this beautiful exterior. After their talk, he had gained no useful information, only the Consul’s intense suspicion.
Han Naijin finished the call and turned. “Someone will come shortly to take you to the med-pod.”
Bai Mu nodded. “Thank you, Officer.”
Han Naijin didn’t look at him again. He turned to a nearby cabinet and rummaged through it. Then, with one hand behind his back, he walked to Bai Muâs side, looking down at him with an unreadable curl of his lip.
Bai Mu met Han Naijinâs gaze candidly. The handsome face was in his sight, but what he really wanted to see was what was in the hand behind the man’s back.
Han Naijin suddenly leaned in. Before Bai Mu could react, the man grabbed his wrist. Bai Mu instantly lost his balance and fell back onto the bed.
Han Naijinâs body kept pressing closer until they were nearly nose-to-nose. Warm breath puffed against each other’s faces. The shirt on Han Naijinâs chest tightened from the lean, the muscles beneath the fabric pulsing with strength, bringing an undeniable sense of pressure.
What is he doing?
Bai Mu was baffled by the Consul’s sudden move. Every cell in his body was in combat mode. He was like a bow pulled to its limit; any more force and he would snap. But Han Naijin just looked at him with a half-smile, his eyes scanning his face.
Bai Mu struggled to pull his wrist away, but Han Naijin held on tight. Finally, the hand behind the man’s back moved to the front. He was holding a book. He stuffed it into Bai Muâs clenched hand.
Bai Mu took it and looked. It was a red hardcover book titled: The Civil Code of Laea City.
Bai Mu: “…”
He’s telling me to behave!
Han Naijin stood up quickly, looking with satisfaction at Bai Muâs darkening expression. Having gotten the reaction he wanted, he picked up the medical kit and left the room without another word.
Bang. The door closed.
Bai Mu looked at the closed door and let out a long sigh. His tight nerves finally got a moment of relief. He looked around, knowing Xiao Piao must be in the room. He had set it that way; it wouldn’t leave him. Sure enough, he saw the idiotic ladybug clinging to a corner of the wall. Bai Mu finally felt a little more at ease.
While waiting for the doctors, he leaned against the headboard and began to analyze his situation.
Though brought back by the Consul, he was still in extreme danger. The mercenary had an unknown motive. During his escape, the Empire would surely have sent agents after him. They wouldn’t let a criminal who held all the mecha manufacturing secrets remain at large. He had revealed himself at the casino; the Empire would find him soon. If caught, he would only face death.
If he died now, he would bear the infamy of treason for the rest of his life.
He couldn’t stay in Laea City forever. He had to enter a military mecha base, recharge his mecha, and leave.
And the man who just left was his best ticket into a base.
Thinking of this, Bai Mu said to Xiao Piao, “Xiao Piao, I need the Consul’s fileâname, age, history… everything.”
Xiao Piao: “Master, this room has an electromagnetic shielding device. I can’t load new information.”
Fine. It really was a prison cell.
Knock, knock, knock. There was a knock on the door. Two people dressed as doctors entered. Bai Mu temporarily set aside his plans, sat on the floating chair, and was escorted to the med-pod by the two doctors.
Night had fallen deeply. The Consulâs office was finally quiet. Han Naijin let out a breath, tiredly rolling his neck as he leaned back in his chair.
Since taking over Laea City a month ago, he had been exhausted every day. Being Consul was much harder than being a mercenary. Thinking back to his days as a mercenaryâearning huge fees and living a life of freedomâhe really missed it.
Now, there were endless affairs, documents to read, meetings to attend, and he even had to do night patrols personally. Han Naijinâs brow furrowed.
As he drifted into thought, there was a knock on the door. Before he could say “come in,” the person entered. It was the blond Alpha, Situ. He was very casual, showing no signs of a subordinate meeting his superior. He smiled. “Consul, the citizens of Laea City can’t see you working late into the night.”
Han Naijin remained leaning back, squinting at Situ. “Situ, time spent on nonsense doesn’t count toward your salary.”
“Ha. Then let’s talk about something that counts. Another batch of the former Consul’sâyour father’sâbelongings has been organized. How do you want to handle them?” Situ asked.
“Destroy them,” Han Naijin said without hesitation.
Situ wasn’t surprised by the answer and didn’t push. He stepped forward and handed a file to Han Naijin. “The Omega rescued from Ponce Casino three days ago is awake. Heâs been sent back. This is the result of the investigation into the whole incident.”
Han Naijin took the file and began to read.
The document detailed the entire alley fight, including Bai Mu being auctioned at the underground casino, the riot, and his brawl with the crowd. At the end were two pagesâBai Muâs physical exam and his record in the med-pod.
As the soldier had said that night, such things happened constantly in Laea City. He had just taken over; it wasn’t realistic to restore order overnight.
He had the heart, but it needed time.
Han Naijin was tired from a long day. He was just flipping through casually until he saw the words “Silver Mecha.” His eyes, which had been skimming, suddenly stopped. He sat up straight and began to read the report carefully.
It was written that many people at the casino saw the Omega wearing a silver mecha suit, crashing through the roof into the air, and then falling back down.
He actually has a light mecha.
But the Omega he rescued had nothing on him except that bathrobe.
He flipped to the physical exam and med-pod record. This time, Han Naijin read with extreme focus, finally stopping at the eye exam section.
Diagnosis: Corneal surface was damaged by a particle beam. However, it was only superficial; no internal brain damage was sustained. Conclusion: Suspected attempted criminal reform, but it was not completed.
If he had lost interest in Bai Mu after getting the reportâeven thinking about sending him away once he woke upâhe didn’t feel that way anymore after seeing “light mecha” and “criminal reform.” He felt a strong desire to investigate.
Han Naijin massaged his temples, recalling that night.
He found this Omega very interesting.
One moment, the Omega was fighting ruthlessly; the next, upon hearing “Consul,” he put on an act of being fragile and helpless. But no matter how he disguised himself, eyes couldn’t lie. The seemingly weak Omega had eyes that were proud and cold. Instead of fear, he was incredibly calm.
Moreover, he clearly wasn’t good at flirting or seducing, yet when facing Han Naijin, he kept trying to use what he thought were effective methods. He probably didn’t even notice that while he was doing it, his brow was furrowed and his eyes were filled with loathing. Yet, he forced himself to do it.
What was his goal? Regardless, he was a smart Omega who knew how to use his advantages. Such a person was interesting, but also very dangerous.
Han Naijin tapped his fingers on the desk.
If he let him go, the Omega would surely find a way to get close to the military, which might cause even more trouble. It was better to keep him under his eye to see what he was up toâplaying along with the act.
The Consulâs life was too dull; he didn’t mind a little extra fun.
After sitting for a while longer, Han Naijin picked up his jacket and left the office.
Translatorâs Note:
Hey everyone! Welcome to the start of this wild ride! Our MC, Bai Mu, is the definition of “looks like a cinnamon roll but could actually kill you.” And Han Naijin? Former mercenary turned politician? Talk about a power couple in the making.
Terms to note:
- Dodder Flower (čä¸čą): A common CN web novel trope. It refers to a parasitic plant that can’t stand on its own, used to describe Alphas or Omegas who are entirely dependent on others. Bai Mu is definitely not one, though he’s doing a great job acting like it!
- Ying ying ying (ĺ¤ĺ¤ĺ¤): This is a cute/annoying onomatopoeia for crying used by people trying to act delicate. It’s the peak “pitiful beauty” sound.
- Flying Eagle (éŁéš°): Sounds like a generic name, but in this world, they’re basically the elite special forces of the mercenary world.
I hope you enjoyed the first few chapters!Â
