Chapter 104: The Death of Zhang YongmeiÂ
It was late at night by the time the two returned to Pearl Garden. After a series of travels, Chen Jiamu was already exhausted.
He went to the bedroom and flopped onto the bed. Without even taking off his clothes, he lay flat on his stomach.
“Jiamu?”
“Take a shower before lying down?”
Li Xi nagged a few times but saw no reaction from Chen Jiamu. Putting down his things, he walked into the bedroom.
Looking closely, Chen Jiamu was already snoring away, fast asleep.
Is he that tired?
Sigh…
Li Xi let out a light sigh. In the end, he could only squat down to remove the man’s shoes and socks.
Early the next morning, Chen Jiamu was pulled up by Li Xi. It turned out Li Xi had received a message from Song Jin asking if they were back.
“Get up, Iâll take you to breakfast.” Li Xi didn’t reply to her message but turned to look at Chen Jiamu.
“What forâ”
Chen Jiamu wasn’t fully awake, his voice thick with drowsiness. Li Xi reached out to rub his head. “Taking you to breakfast.”
“Hurry up and get ready.”
Chen Jiamu let out a groan and crawled up unwillingly.
Waking up early made him very sleepy, but he obediently got up nonetheless.
After they finished getting ready, they got into Li Xiâs car. While waiting at a red light, a crazy woman suddenly rushed forward.
The woman was wearing a blue hospital gown, her hair messy and stuck to her face. Her face was deathly pale, and her features were so thin they were skeletalâher face had completely sunken in. Only a pair of dark, somber eyes remained, staring fixedly at Li Xi in the car.
Under the falling white snow, she looked like a demon.
“This is…”
Looking at the womanâs face, Chen Jiamu found it somewhat familiar, but with that demon-like face, he couldn’t quite place her.
“Save me!”
“I don’t want chemotherapy!”
As the voice came out, both men in the car froze.
This is… Zhang Yongmei?
“How did she become like this? Didn’t you say she was dying last time?”
“She looks like… but she also…”
Chen Jiamuâs brain was in a muddle. His memory of Zhang Yongmei was still that of four years ago.
Seeing her withered state now, he was truly too shocked to remain calm.
What terminal illness did she have?
But if she did have one, it was her own doingâshe deserved it.
“Li Xi-xi…”
“Xi-xi!”
Outside the car, Zhang Yongmei seemed to recognize Li Xi. Her hands beat heavily against the window, while not far away, several men and women in white uniforms were chasing her.
“Save me!”
“I don’t want chemotherapy!”
With her talking about chemotherapy, did she really have a terminal illness?
“Has she gone mad?”
Chen Jiamu was puzzled. Li Xi glanced at the Zhang Yongmei outside the window, staring at her expressionlessly without saying a word.
“She has cancer. Sheâs had chemotherapy for several years, and sheâs long since gone mad.”
“She?”
“Whoâs paying for her treatment?” Chen Jiamu asked in confusion. Didn’t Zhang Yongmei have no money?
“Li Ru.”
“Ah?”
Chen Jiamu was even more stunned. He didn’t understand.
“She found out Li Ruâs secret and used it to threaten him. But Li Ru certainly wouldn’t let her control him so easily.”
“So, he tampered with her medication. Zhang Yongmei isn’t stupid; she must have noticed something, and thatâs why she ran out.” Li Xiâs tone was very flat. He watched as the personnel controlled Zhang Yongmei and pulled her toward the road.
“How do you know?”
Chen Jiamu had been back in Bei Cheng for so long and didn’t know; how did Li Xi know while in Su Shi?
“Because… know yourself and know your enemy, and you will win a hundred battles…”
Another red light vanished, and Li Xiâs face tightened as he stepped on the gas.
Behind them, a massive, piercing sound reached their ears. Chen Jiamu subconsciously looked back to see a blue figure arc through the air before smashing heavily onto the ground…
“She…”
Chen Jiamuâs pupils shrank violently as an indescribable emotion surged into his heart.
Zhang Yongmei had been hit by a car…
Li Xi glanced at it casually and continued to drive steadily.
Chen Jiamu had a thousand questions, but seeing Li Xiâs grim face, he kept his mouth shut.
It wasn’t until the car slowly parked at the entrance of Zhao Huâs restaurant that Li Xi spoke gloomily. “Li Ru has been paying for her treatment all these years, but how could he let someone threaten him? He had those people tamper with her medication.”
“Thatâs why Zhang Yongmei went mad.”
“And the secret she used against Li Ru was simply…”
“Li Ru is the biological son of the Song parents. Aunt Song was adopted.”
Li Xiâs words completely jolted Chen Jiamu awake. If that was the case, then…
Then everything made senseâwhy the Song parents treated their daughter so harshly yet were so indulgent toward an outsider.
“But…”
Chen Jiamu didn’t understand. Why was this the outcome?
If Li Ru was the child of the Song parents, what did that have to do with Song Jin?
“Because the one who couldn’t conceive wasn’t Aunt Song, but… Li Ru.”
Another bombshell. Chen Jiamuâs eyes widened in shock, his expression utterly stunned.
“This… I… holy crap…”
“Then you…”
Chen Jiamu wanted to say, then aren’t you not Li Ruâs child, but why…
“Don’t be so shocked. I was born to Zhang Yongmei, but I don’t know which man it was. Li Ru just happened to have a night of pleasure with her, so the title of my father was naturally pinned on him.”
“The Song parents never allowed Aunt Song to divorce Li Ru. It wasn’t because a divorced daughter would shame the family; it was to cover up the secret that Li Ru is infertile.”
“Otherwise, why do you think Li Ru has so many mistresses but not a single child?”
“Aunt Song wouldn’t deign to strike at those people, so excluding external factors, where does the problem lie?”
Li Xiâs words left Chen Jiamu shocked again and again. He never imagined that the things he couldn’t understand had so many twists and turns.
“How do you know so much?”
Chen Jiamu leaned in, looking at him with heartache. Seeing the pain in his eyes, Li Xi chuckled and reached out to pinch his face, his tone relaxed and natural. “I investigated it.”
“I started looking when I returned to the country. I only found out the whole truth recently.”
“So, I have nothing to do with Li Ru. Thereâs a reason I don’t look like him.”
Li Xi spoke easily, but Chen Jiamu found it hard to express his heartache.
“Letâs go eat. Forget about her.”
Not wanting to continue the topic, Chen Jiamu hurriedly got out of the car and pulled him into Zhao Huâs restaurant.
At the same time, the morning news was broadcasting an accident that occurred on Zhongshan Road.
“At ten in the morning, a woman behaving abnormally was hit and killed by a car while crossing Zhongshan Road. Several medical staff members were chasing her; she is suspected to be a patient who escaped from Xian Yue Psychiatric Hospital.”
