Chapter 44 Unspoken Rules
“Team leader promotion?”
“There seems to be one. What’s wrong? Do you have your eye on it?”
Li Qi glanced up. After Chen Jiamu finished speaking, he continued to pick fish bones.
After picking them out, he pushed them towards Chen Jiamu and then took a piece for himself.
“Become a team leader? I’m not interested.”
“It’s a grueling job. Whoever wants it can have it.”
Chen Jiamu wasn’t interested in promotions. He never had any desire for such things.
“You wouldn’t earn money even if you had the chance?”
“How much?”
When it came to money, Chen Jiamu did have a slight reaction. Elegantly wiping his mouth with a napkin, Li Qi smiled at him, “Didn’t you say you weren’t interested? Why are you so enthusiastic when it comes to money?”
“Would you say no to extra money?” Chen Jiamu retorted with a pout. Li Qi shook his head, then slowly said, “The team leader’s salary this time is 3,000 yuan more than before. And the bonuses are also higher.”
After Li Qi finished speaking, Chen Jiamu frowned, pondering for a moment, “This treatment…sounds pretty good. No wonder Zhang Xin was tempted.”
“So Qian Chengfeng promised that to Zhang Xin?”
Li Qi glanced back and silently took a sip of tea, “Do you want it?”
“If I wanted it, I’d get it.”
“But…still, I’ll pass.”
“Drawing too much attention.”
His presence in Li Qi’s office was already noticeable enough. If he became a team leader, he wouldn’t be able to work in the company anymore.
“I’m already here, do you think I would let him get away with it?”
“This is the first time I’ve eavesdropped on someone using their position to take advantage of someone else in plain sight.”
At Li Qi’s words, Chen Jiamu almost laughed, then secretly took a picture of the couple opposite them.
Putting down his phone, Chen Jiamu sighed. He used to think Zhang Xin was an unattainable goddess.
Growing up in such a family, she still managed to win scholarships and excel in various subjects in college.
But after a year of pursuing her, and especially after their falling out,
Zhang Xin’s true nature was exposed. However, he didn’t have the right to condemn her; the only thing he could condemn was her using him as a spare tire.
He knew how difficult Zhang Xin’s family was, and he understood that she was being exploited.
But it wasn’t his concern; he had no obligation to help her. If she couldn’t end the situation, she would continue to be exploited.
The most painful thing is being foolishly aware. Zhang Xin knew her parents’ true nature, but she hadn’t thought about escaping, instead choosing to fill this bottomless pit.
From his year of transfers, he knew Zhang Xin hadn’t spent a cent on herself. She had been filling that bottomless pit, so when he saw Qian Chengfeng taking advantage of her, he wanted to stop them but gave up.
If she had resisted, he would have intervened. But Zhang Xin didn’t. She knew that to get something, you have to pay a price.
“Are you soft-hearted?”
“Your expression is so conflicted.”
Chen Jiamu looked away, awkwardly stuffing his mouth with fish. Chen Jiamu didn’t speak, and Li Qi’s expression turned unpleasant.
Could he still have feelings for Zhang Xin?
Was he feeling sorry for her?
“You’re thinking too much; everyone has their own fate.”
“Don’t interfere. I want to see how Qian Chengfeng makes Zhang Xin a team leader.”
Li Qi’s eyes darkened, his hand picking fish bones paused. He looked towards the nearby tea.
A thought struck him. He took out his phone, scanned the QR code for ordering, and a few minutes later, the waiter brought a bottle of coconut milk. Chen Jiamu didn’t pay much attention, thinking it was just part of their order.
He was eating boneless fish, his eyes fixed on the couple opposite.
“Manager…”
Seeing Qian Chengfeng’s hand become more brazen, Zhang Xin trembled, trying to stop him. Qian Chengfeng, overcome by desire, breathed heavily against her neck, inhaling deeply.
Unsatisfied, he licked Zhang Xin’s earlobe. Frightened, Zhang Xin clutched her clothes, her body stiff and trembling.
She was scared…
She regretted her earlier weakness, but her only chance at a better life was her appearance…
Relying on herself was too slow; she couldn’t wait…
“Don’t be afraid, I won’t eat you.”
Seeing her fear, Qian Chengfeng chuckled, sitting up straight before grabbing her hand and placing it on his…
“Ah…”
Zhang Xin’s eyes widened in fright, her hand quickly withdrawing. Her body recoiled. “Man…Manager, I…”
“Shh.”
Fearing her voice would attract attention, Qian Chengfeng gestured to her.
The frightened beauty was truly enticing. Realizing he had been too hasty, Qian Chengfeng coughed lightly, returning to his seat.
“Don’t be afraid.”
“Let’s take it slow.”
He was quite patient with college students. She was willing, but a little timid.
Zhang Xin covered her rapidly beating chest, shrinking back into her seat.
“Alright, we’ve eaten our fill. Let’s go for a walk, see if there’s anything you like.”
Qian Chengfeng wiped his mouth, getting up to look at Zhang Xin. Zhang Xin raised her eyes slightly, hesitating for a moment before getting up and walking towards the door.
Seeing this, Qian Chengfeng smiled triumphantly, putting his arm around her shoulder, forcibly holding her against him.
Only after they left did Chen Jiamu look away, pondering for a moment before saying, “As I thought.”
Zhang Xin had resisted for a moment, making him think she had regretted it. Unexpectedly, she followed him out.
Everyone has their own fate…
“So pensive, are you feeling sorry for her?”
“You’re thinking too much. I just think fate is unpredictable.”
“Grilled fish is still the best.”
Chen Jiamu shook his head, lowering his head to eat the fish in his bowl. Li Qi stared at the bowl of fish, silently pouring a glass of coconut milk for him.
“Drink some coconut milk.”
Chen Jiamu had no reservations about accepting Li Qi’s offer and drank most of it before continuing to eat.
After a while, drowsiness came over him. Chen Jiamu yawned lazily, his eyes getting watery.
“Too full, I’m sleepy.”
“Let’s go home after you’re done.”
Li Qi didn’t linger, wiping her mouth before gathering her things and standing up. They settled the bill and left through the side door.
Li Qi’s car was parked at the side door. Chen Jiamu got in and kept yawning, “So sleepy…”
“Why am I so sleepy…”
“Probably too many carbs, high blood sugar makes you sleepy.”
Li Qi fastened her seatbelt, starting the car and driving towards their apartment complex.
After driving for a while, turning her head, she saw Chen Jiamu had fallen asleep.
