Chapter 47: What Are You Trying to Do?
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
“I’m sure.”
“Have you really thought this through? What if he ends up hating you for it?”
“Hating me is better than forgetting me.”
“Do you have any idea what the consequences will be?”
“I do. And I accept them.”
“You’ve really lost it. Causing trouble the second you’re back in the country!”
“Yang Zhou, I haven’t been sane for a year or two now.”
Li Qi’s words left the man in the office speechless for a long moment.
Inside the office, Li Qi stood by the window. Behind him, a man in a white lab coat sat, staring helplessly at his back.
“Have you been taking your medication regularly?”
“Don’t tell me you haven’t.”
Li Qi turned to glance at him, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. The look in his eyes made Yang Zhou’s heart clench.
Four years ago, during his internship abroad, he had taken on Li Qi’s case. He’d initially assumed it was a simple case of depression, but as he learned more, he realized the truth.
Li Qi’s condition was far more complex than just depression. His psyche had already fractured, creating what was essentially two consciousnesses in one body.
His state fluctuated. Most of the time, he appeared perfectly normal, but his condition couldn’t be classified as such. Li Qi was prone to losing control and doing irrational things.
For example, the first time Yang Zhou witnessed one of his episodes abroad, Li Qi had pinned another psychiatric patient to the ground, beating him while spewing profanities. He’d nearly killed the man.
Yang Zhou had never seen anything like it. When Li Qi was stable, he was always quiet, sitting silently in a corner. Sometimes, Yang Zhou almost believed he was completely fine.
After that incident, his perception of Li Qi changed completely. He began to discreetly increase the dosage of the medication he prescribed.
It was a huge relief when Li Qi’s condition finally stabilized, and he seemed no different from anyone else.
He’d spent four years abroad dealing with Li Qi, and they had eventually become friends. After all, who doesn’t like money?
Li Qi had funded this entire private hospital for him.
And now, not long after returning to the country, Li Qi had dropped another bombshell on him.
“I can’t do what you’re asking. How is that any different from sending me straight to jail?”
“I’m not asking you to kill someone. Just give me a bottle of pills.”
“That’s still a no.” Yang Zhou’s refusal was firm, leaving no room for negotiation.
Seeing that talking was useless, Li Qi resorted to force, rummaging through the office, opening drawers and cabinets.
Yang Zhou yelled at him to stop, but his body didn’t move an inch. “Stop it!”
“Don’t go into my red cabinet!”
“You can’t take even one or two!”
As Yang Zhou shouted, Li Qi immediately opened the red cabinet, pulled out a white bottle, glanced at him, and stuffed it into his pocket.
“Nothing will go wrong. If it does, I’ll take full responsibility.”
With that, Li Qi left without a backward glance, leaving a mess behind him.
Staring at the ransacked office, Yang Zhou took out his phone and snapped a couple of pictures. Resigned, he walked over, squatted down, and started cleaning up the mess. “I’m really at your mercy. How did you get such a hold on me?”
Yang Zhou knew Li Qi was into men. He’d known since they were abroad. He had once overheard Li Qi say the name “Chen Jiamu.”
He’d assumed it was just a friendship, but then he saw him… calling out Chen Jiamu’s name… while…
How did he know? Because he was Li Qi’s live-in doctor at the time.
In that moment, he knew he would never understand Li Qi’s world.
With the medicine in hand, Li Qi’s steps grew lighter, a look of grim determination in his eyes.
Meanwhile, in the lobby, Chen Jiamu sat holding his arm after his blood test, looking around. Where had Li Qi gone in the time it took to draw some blood?
Was he still in the bathroom?
“What are you thinking about?” Li Qi’s voice came from behind him. Chen Jiamu turned to see him walking in with two drinks.
“Where did you go?”
Li Qi held up the drinks. “I saw you were sweating this afternoon. I bought you a drink to replenish your energy.”
“I’m done with the blood test. When will the results be ready?”
Taking the drink, Chen Jiamu twisted it open and took a sip. It was a bit astringent. He looked up, frowning. “Why is this drink so bitter?”
“Is it bitter?”
“Maybe it’s a new flavor.”
Li Qi silently opened his own bottle and took a small sip. “Seems fine to me.”
“Really?”
Dubious, Chen Jiamu didn’t drink any more. He didn’t like bitter things.
“Are we going to sit here and wait for the results?”
“No need. Let’s head back first. I’ll have my friend send them to me.”
“Alright.” Chen Jiamu thought about it and decided waiting around was pointless. He stood up and started walking toward the exit.
As he passed a trash can by the door, he tossed the drink in without a second thought, muttering as he left, “This new flavor is disgusting.”
Walking behind him, Li Qi glanced at the bin, then said nothing and followed him out.
In the car, Chen Jiamu pulled out his phone and started scrolling through videos to pass the time. Li Qi calmly got into the driver’s seat.
A while passed, but Li Qi didn’t start the car. Sensing something was off, Chen Jiamu put down his phone and looked at him, puzzled. “What’s wrong?”
“Aren’t we heading back?”
Li Qi fastened his seatbelt, his eyes fixed on him. “We’re going home.”
“But I’m waiting.”
“Waiting for what?”
“Jiamu, if I did something one day that made you unhappy, would you hate me?”
The random question made Chen Jiamu sense that something was wrong, but he didn’t overthink it. After a moment’s thought, he said, “It would depend on how serious it was. I wouldn’t get angry over something trivial.”
“How serious would it have to be for you to get angry?”
“What, did you kill someone? Or are you planning to dock my pay?”
Chen Jiamu’s brow furrowed, not understanding why Li Qi was acting so strangely today.
“What if I drugged you?”
“D-drugged me?”
The words shocked Chen Jiamu so much he almost choked on his own saliva. He stammered for a moment before processing it. “Why the hell would you drug me?”
“Are you trying to steal my kidney?”
Just as he said that, Li Qi suddenly unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned in, trapping Chen Jiamu in the confined space of the passenger seat.
Li Qi moved extremely close, face to face with Chen Jiamu. Less than two inches separated them, their breaths mingling in the air.
Chen Jiamu could smell Li Qi’s unique scent—a faint, medicinal fragrance mixed with a light perfume.
Li Qi inched closer until their noses touched, his eyes like a predator’s, filled with a lethal wildness.
Stunned by his actions, Chen Jiamu was about to raise a hand to push him away when two sentences echoed in his ear.
“I’m not after your kidney…”
