Chapter 93: Sudden Accident
It was late at night when the two landed in Bei Cheng. Chen Jiamu was already yawning repeatedly while sitting in the car.
With great difficulty, they returned to Pearl Garden. He was already so sleepy that his eyelids felt heavy just sitting on the sofa. He took a look at Li Xi, who was organizing his shoes at the door, closed his eyes, and fell asleep.
When Li Xi finished with the shoes and turned around, he saw Chen Jiamu lying crookedly on the sofa, fast asleep.
“Jiamu?”
Walking over to the sofa, Li Xi pushed him gently. Seeing no reaction, he sighed helplessly. Then, he scooped him up in a princess carry and walked with steady steps toward the bedroom, carefully placing him on the bed.
The next morning, Chen Jiamu was awakened by a phone call. Dazedly, he picked up his phone and answered. Chen Cheng’s voice came from the other end.
“Are you back?”
“Mm, I’m back.” Chen Jiamu had just woken up and his brain wasn’t fully clear yet, but his words were audible.
“There’s a construction site visit this afternoon. Are you free?”
“Okay.”
Chen Jiamu didn’t even hear clearly what Chen Cheng said before he agreed. On the other end of the line, Chen Cheng heard his dazed voice and helplessly shrugged her shoulders.
After hanging up, Chen Jiamu wanted to go back to sleep, but a mischievous hand under the covers made it difficult for him to do so.
“I still have to inspect the construction site this afternoon, give me a break.”
Without even opening his eyes, Chen Jiamu grabbed the troublemaking hand, his tone sounding quite pitiful.
Li Xi gave a light chuckle, resting his head against Jiamu’s shoulder. “Where is it?”
“Didn’t she ask who you were with?”
Li Xi held his hand, bringing it to his lips to kiss, and intimately rubbed his cheek against it.
“It’s normal for me to go out alone; my sister won’t ask.”
“In her eyes, my thinking is very erratic. She’s long since used to it.” Chen Jiamu rolled over to face him, their foreheads touching.
Li Xi chuckled softly, reaching out to stroke his face. “True enough.”
“After all, what normal person introduces themselves by talking about watching videos of people trimming horse hooves the first time they meet?”
“And even insisted that I watch them too.”
When his past “dark history” was dug up, Chen Jiamu didn’t feel embarrassed. It just felt strangely hilarious coming from Li Xi’s mouth.
“A hero doesn’t mention his past glories.” Chen Jiamu wanted to interrupt the topic, but he had underestimated Li Xi’s attention to detail.
“But aren’t you still watching them now? I saw that you even have them saved in your liked videos.”
Now Chen Jiamu wasn’t sleepy anymore. Frowning, he took out his phone and flipped through his liked videos on the app. Sure enough, they were there.
“Wow, you even saw that!”
Chen Jiamu put down his phone, stretched out his hands like claws to grab Li Xi’s hands, and tried to tickle him.
Unexpectedly, Li Xi turned the tables on him, and the two of them played around on the bed for a while.
After playing for a bit, Chen Jiamu began to get himself ready. After finishing breakfast with Li Xi, he rushed to the company.
Li Xi drove him as usual, stopping a short distance away as they neared the building. Chen Jiamu was about to get out when Li Xi grabbed him. Seeing the longing in Li Xi’s eyes, Jiamu sighed. He checked left and right to make sure no one was looking, then quickly pressed a kiss on Li Xi’s lips before hurriedly getting out of the car, his face flushed.
Breathing somewhat erratically, Chen Jiamu ran all the way into the company. Once in his office, he covered his face, feeling it burning hot.
It was a new day with many tasks to handle. Chen Jiamu spent the whole morning processing work.
He had lunch with Chen Cheng. Noticing the bracelet on his wrist, she felt that his aesthetic taste was finally on point for once.
“This bracelet of yours is quite nice. Who gave it to you?”
“What do you mean ‘gave’? I bought it myself.”
Chen Jiamu raised his hand to stroke the bracelet, his eyes full of tenderness.
Chen Cheng had her head down at the moment and didn’t notice the change in his gaze as she ate her lunch.
After a while, Chen Cheng suddenly remembered something. She looked up at Chen Jiamu and sent him a location on her phone.
“This is the address of the construction site. I heard they’re resting today, so go there with Little Lin to check the progress. Just take a few photos and come back.”
“I don’t know what’s going on, but the project over there is always being delayed.”
Receiving the message, Chen Jiamu quirked his brow and smiled. “I’ve become a supervisor?”
“Don’t give me that. I’m just asking you to take a few pictures.”
“Just to see what the reason is.”
Chen Cheng didn’t take the bait. Chen Jiamu put away his phone and nodded confidently. “Easy enough.”
In the afternoon, after Chen Jiamu and Chen Cheng finished their handover, he took the company car to the development site.
The road was smooth. Upon arriving at the destination, Chen Jiamu saw a group of workers sitting in a circle. Even when they saw someone coming, several of them continued to discuss something.
Getting closer, he realized they were discussing the timeline for the project’s progress. As Chen Jiamu approached, several of them began to ask why he had come.
Hearing he was sent by the company, they immediately surrounded him, talking all at once about the difficulties they had encountered recently.
Chen Jiamu caught a key point: they were all saying the weather was too cold and asking if their wages could be increased.
Chen Jiamu’s brow furrowed. The Chen family’s wages were considered high, so why would anyone complain about low pay?
Upon asking further, he roughly guessed the underlying reason. They said the person in charge would find excuses to deduct their wages from time to time, making their lives miserable.
If Chen Jiamu hadn’t come, they wouldn’t even have had a place to air their grievances.
“Boss, you must help us. We have the elderly and the young to support, we rely on this wage to survive.”
Listening to the workers’ complaints, Chen Jiamu nodded. Then, he walked into the construction site with his assistant.
Looking at the progress, if it continued at this speed, the project wouldn’t be finished even after the New Year. Chen Jiamu turned and whispered to the assistant, “Take photos with your phone. After we return to the company, we’ll talk to the project manager.”
He hated people who deducted wages for no reason the most. It reminded him of his days at Jingyi, being squeezed and having his wages deducted by an unscrupulous boss.
“Okay.”
The two of them circled the construction site. Chen Jiamu felt he had taken enough photos and planned to leave with the assistant.
Unexpectedly, just as they walked to a certain spot, he felt a gust of cold wind coming from above. Out of instinct, Chen Jiamu shoved the assistant aside. A brick falling from a high place hit him directly on the arm.
The intense pain made Chen Jiamu hiss. On the ground were broken brick fragments. His arm felt warm as bright red blood dripped from his fingertips onto the ground.
Enduring the pain, Chen Jiamu looked up and saw a panicked figure running away.
“Call the police!”
Chen Jiamu hadn’t expected to be ambushed during a routine inspection.
Feeling the presence of the helmet on his head, Chen Jiamu felt incredibly lucky that both he and the assistant had been wearing them!
Otherwise, if that brick had landed on his head, it wouldn’t have been as simple as a bleeding arm.
After the assistant scrambled up from the ground, he fumbled for his phone to call the police and emergency services.
Gritting his teeth, Chen Jiamu was supported by the assistant as they walked out of the construction site. His face was now deathly pale.
The workers crouching outside were terrified by the scene, not knowing what had happened inside.
Today was supposed to be a rest day, so there were no people in the construction site. They had stayed because they had nowhere else to go, hoping they might get lucky and meet a leader they could talk to.
Now, seeing Chen Jiamu coming out from inside covered in blood, they were so scared they didn’t dare make a sound…
