Chapter 78: The Place of Stargazing
Zebulun figured it out.
The Demon King’s acting skills were so poor that even he couldn’t be fooled. Yet, the Hero deliberately went along with the Demon King’s words. This was equivalent to saying… the Hero had already discovered a problem with the Demon King’s identity. But since the Demon King seemed unwilling to admit it, the Hero deliberately played along, even actively helping him lie.
This was very strange.
Zebulun frowned, looking at Misha, then at Lance who was staring at him. He vaguely felt that his previous guess was indeed correct; the Hero truly harbored a strange fondness for their Demon King.
He didn’t know if he should tell the Demon King about this. He could only remain silent, pretending not to have heard their conversation.
But Lance was looking at him.
Those eyes still held no hint of a smile, and even carried a warning, as if telling Zebulun to also go along with Misha’s words. And Zebulun knew the strength of this Hero very well… In the end, he could only remain silent and nod at the Hero.
“…Yes,” Zebulun said in a low voice. “I am.”
So Lance continued to press: “Why are you here?”
Zebulun: “…”
How silly.
Zebulun felt this whole thing was utterly silly.
The Hero already knew the Demon King’s identity, so he could tell at a glance that Zebulun was summoned here by the Demon King. Yet, the Hero insisted on asking him this way.
Zebulun really didn’t want to play along with the Hero’s act. But after remaining silent for just a moment, he felt the Hero’s gaze change.
That gaze was sharp, carved onto him like a sword, and full of warning. Zebulun could only take a deep breath and obediently say, “I… was passing by on business.”
Lance: “Business?”
Zebulun: “…The sky nearby.”
This was the only excuse he could think of.
A problem that would concern both the Hero and the Demon King greatly, and was also a tangible reality.
But this answer clearly far exceeded Lance’s expectations.
He was somewhat surprised and immediately pressed impatiently: “Can it be seen here too?”
“Only a little,” Zebulun said. “It’s not as thin as in the Dragon Clan’s territory.”
Lance nodded: “Then it seems the Dragon Clan is the best location.”
Zebulun: “…Mm.”
Misha: “???”
Wait, what are they talking about?
Why did these two start speaking in riddles again?
Misha couldn’t help frowning and asked, “Are you talking about ‘stars’ again?”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “I really need an explanation.”
But Lance smiled slightly and didn’t answer his question. Zebulun remained silent for a good while, seeing that no one intended to speak, before he reluctantly opened his mouth and said, “You already know the truth; you should be able to guess it.”
Misha: “…”
No, he couldn’t.
Not only could he not guess, but the detestable Hero was unwilling to tell him!
“I don’t want to guess,” Misha took a deep breath. “Can’t you just tell me directly?”
Zebulun: “I…”
Before speaking, Zebulun looked at the terrifying Hero first.
This time, the Hero wasn’t looking at him, and there was no special expression on his face. He seemed indifferent to Zebulun revealing this matter. But Zebulun still felt a vague fear. He weighed his words, thought for a long time, and could only say, “It’s related to the Light of Truth.”
Misha: “…What is the Light of Truth?”
The matter circled back to the starting point. Everyone seemed to be speaking in riddles, and Misha really disliked people deliberately doing this to him.
As for Zebulun, he hadn’t expected Misha not to know even this. He looked at the Hero again, then whispered, “It is the sky.”
Misha: “The sky?”
Before he could ask further, Lance leisurely asked Zebulun, “Where is the place you mentioned?”
For a moment, Zebulun didn’t know whose question to answer first.
But he thought, since Lance interrupted him at this moment, it meant Lance probably didn’t want him to tell the Demon King other things right now.
So Zebulun nervously skipped Misha’s inquiry and answered Lance’s question first.
“I haven’t been to that place,” Zebulun whispered. “Within their Holy Land, it should be near the Tree of Life.”
Lance: “Can I find that place?”
“I can teach you the way to find it,” Zebulun thought for a moment, then frowned again, saying, “But you don’t know magic…”
All his methods for finding these stargazing places relied on magic and spells. But the Hero in front of him was obviously a warrior. If he didn’t know magic, then this spell could probably only be taught to the Demon King.
Zebulun looked at Misha.
Although Misha was interrupted by the Hero, he was also very curious about what the stargazing place the Hero and Zebulun mentioned was. It didn’t matter if the Hero didn’t know magic; he learned spells very quickly! If Zebulun taught him now, he could immediately memorize the spell backward!
Lance frowned slightly: “Actually I—”
Just then, Misha cleared his throat and said, “I know how!”
Lance: “…”
Lance immediately stopped what he was about to say, nodded along, and said, “Right, he knows.”
Zebulun: “…”
This Hero clearly wanted to say he knew magic just now, didn’t he?!
If the Demon King hadn’t suddenly interrupted, he would have said it already, right?!
Zebulun felt he couldn’t stand watching this anymore.
It was too sour, like a young couple in love, but the Demon King hadn’t noticed anything.
He took a deep breath, seeing Misha eagerly awaiting his spell, so he had to put those messy thoughts aside and seriously explained the method to find that place to Misha.
Specifically, Zebulun felt that Misha should be able to find that place more easily than him.
He knew Misha could see the specific flow of magic. Before the new Demon King took office, the Four Great Demons had also received information about the new Demon King from the Divine Realm.
Misha’s magic was somewhat special, so Zebulun remembered it clearly. This magic happened to be useful at this moment. Zebulun told Misha the spell to find the observation site, adding, “You can pay more attention to the magic in the surroundings.”
Misha: “…”
No, no, this magic can’t be used casually in front of the Hero!
Wouldn’t he expose his identity as soon as he opened his eyes?!
“The magic near that place will be somewhat different from the surroundings,” Zebulun thought about how to describe that strange magic. “It’s a trace left by ancient magic in the human world, carrying an extremely intimidating oppression.”
Misha: “…”
This description… why does it sound so familiar?
Misha couldn’t help asking, “Is it purple?”
Zebulun was stunned, shook his head, and said, “I cannot see the surrounding magic. All I can tell you is what I feel when I approach a stargazing place.”
Misha raised his hand and pointed to the Tree of Life not far behind them.
“Do you mean magic like that?” Misha took a deep breath and said. “The stuff behind that Tree of Life—if you squint, you should be able to see it.”
Zebulun: “…”
Behind the Tree of Life was the magic dispersing after the Gate to Another World was destroyed.
A day had passed, and the twisted dark purple light had dissipated slightly, masked by the radiance of the Tree of Life. It wasn’t conspicuous in the night sky. And Zebulun didn’t know the Gate within the Holy Land had been destroyed, or rather, he didn’t even know such a Gate was hidden in the Elven Holy Land. So from start to finish, he hadn’t noticed the somewhat peculiar night sky.
But if one squinted and looked carefully, avoiding the light of the Tree of Life, one could vaguely see that the sky behind it was slightly distorted, as if magic diffusing from behind had spread across most of the sky blocked by the Tree of Life.
This feeling was very similar to the magic Zebulun sensed every time he went to a stargazing place.
But the magic in those places would never be so dense that it was visible to the naked eye, nor should it overflow and disperse like this. Something definitely happened. Zebulun frowned and thought for a moment, then suddenly spoke, “Today, the people in the Church were panicked.”
He and Ashby were temporarily staying in the Church in Sky City. He mostly stayed indoors or holed up in the Church’s library. Although the people in the Church wouldn’t make it public, today he clearly noticed the hurried and panicked footsteps of several high-ranking monks, which was very different from usual.
He couldn’t help looking up at the dim horizon again and asked hesitantly, “Did something happen?”
Misha: “…”
Misha didn’t know if he should tell Zebulun.
He was now only curious and wanted to verify one thing.
Were the many stargazing places Zebulun mentioned overlapping with the locations of the Gates to Another World?
These mysteries overlapped once again for Misha, and this time, he felt he was about to touch the truth of everything.
Lance spoke before him, still smiling as he whispered, “The Gate to Another World was destroyed.”
Zebulun: “…”
Zebulun was stunned for a long while before his eyes widened in panic, looking incredulously at the distant sky.
“The Gate to Another World… that place?” Zebulun seemed somewhat incoherent. “Could it be… then it’s really true…”
He abruptly stopped his words, his gaze resting on Lance.
Zebulun stopped talking. Lance looked at him with a slight smile. Zebulun inexplicably felt a chill down his spine, unable to suppress the trembling in his heart, feeling he seemed to have said something he shouldn’t have, and knew something he shouldn’t know.
But Lance just nodded and said, “Okay, I know everything.”
Misha: “?”
Know what?!
He still didn’t know anything!
“Tell the spell to Misha,” Lance said. “Then you can go.”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “…”
Both Zebulun and Misha were clearly extremely surprised, as if they couldn’t believe the matter ended so easily. With an Archdemon right in front of him, the Hero actually let him go so easily.
Lance couldn’t help raising an eyebrow slightly, asking, “Why are you looking at me with those eyes?”
Misha: “…Don’t you know clearly?”
Lance: “I’m not some great villain.”
Misha: “…”
Lance couldn’t help smiling, looking in a good mood. He turned around, walked back a few steps, then stopped, looked back at Misha, and asked, “It’s so cold outside, aren’t you going back?”
Misha: “…”
Misha had to turn and quickly ask Zebulun, “What is the spell?”
Zebulun told him the few lines of incantation. Misha nodded again and whispered a reminder, “Run quickly before the Hero changes his mind.”
Zebulun: “…”
Lance heard it.
“Am I that bad?” Lance frowned, somewhat confused. “Even an Archdemon has to run when seeing me?”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “Yes, you are!”
Lance turned around in puzzlement and continued walking back the way he came, unable to help saying, “I’m doing good deeds, right?”
Misha caught up with Lance’s steps and couldn’t help shouting, “Do you think you are a good person?!”
Lance: “Am I not?”
Misha: “You are not!”
Lance: “I am, right.”
Misha: “No!”
Lance: “Really?”
Misha: “NO!”
