Chapter 33: Return to the White Tower
“Alright, go back and rest. If you feel bored, let the Silver Wolf play with you, okay?”
Watching the girl looking as if she wished she could bury her head in the ground, Mo Xiao felt waves of adoration wash over his heart.
His right hand unconsciously brushed over his chest. The mark there was faintly hot, reminding him at every moment that he had been thoroughly marked by her—he belonged to her.
In his sea of consciousness, a sense of stability he had never felt before allowed his mood to relax as never before.
“If you don’t want the Silver Wolf to play with you, how about I rush back to keep you company as soon as I finish the remaining work?”
“Who… who wants your company? I’m not talking to you anymore; I’m going back to rest.”
Su Tang turned around, not daring to look at Mo Xiao even once.
Mo Xiao lowered his head, glancing at the supplementary potions cradled in his arms. With no other choice, he placed them onto the Silver Wolf, letting the wolf carry them into the tent.
“Captain, regarding the mission area’s pollution value: after you eliminated those two A-Class pollutants, it had been showing a downward trend. However, half an hour ago, the pollution value suddenly stalled within a fixed range and stopped changing. We speculate that a new pollutant has been generated.”
Kelai reported what had happened during Mo Xiao’s absence, then stood aside, awaiting Mo Xiao’s next order.
“It should be because of that nest.”
Before he left, he hadn’t destroyed that nest. It seemed the remaining low-level pollutants had elected a new leader and were offering their spiritual power to nurture it.
“Kelai, take a portion of the Sentinels to clear the low-level pollutants on the periphery. The other portion, take the detection instruments and locate the range of the nest.”
That nest wouldn’t stay there motionless waiting for them to annihilate it. Since the pollution value range was still acceptable, the detection instruments could be put to use.
“Yes!”
The Sentinels split into two groups. To prevent any further accidents, Mo Xiao followed Kelai’s small team, leaving only the Silver Wolf to guard Su Tang.
For the next day, the station fell into a rare calm.
The number of low-level pollutants was massive, and the nest’s production speed was extremely fast. In just one night, the pollution value of the mission area rose significantly again. Mo Xiao divided the First Squad Sentinels into three groups, assigned mission areas, and methodically cleared the remaining pollutants.
Su Tang stayed in the tent with the Silver Wolf the whole time. She had wanted to use her spiritual power to help them, but Mo Xiao refused. Firstly, he believed the First Squad had the ability to completely resolve those low-level pollutants.
Secondly, Su Tang’s current public image was that of a frail Guide whose spiritual power had aggressively collapsed because she saved a Sentinel with a level gap too large from her own.
If she took action again now and let others discover the secret that her spiritual power was still abundant, then all the reasons Mo Xiao had given earlier would become nonsense.
Occasionally, the sound of energy guns firing and the low roars of spiritual entities came from outside. The commotion wasn’t loud each time. Knowing there were indeed no dangerous missions outside, Su Tang stopped clamoring to participate in the battle with Mo Xiao.
It took the First Squad two full days to completely clear the pollutants in the mission area and bring the pollution value down to zero.
On the morning of the third day, the First Squad Sentinels, fully geared up, stepped onto the transport plane once again.
Along the way, after politely declining countless Sentinels who wanted to express their goodwill by giving her gifts, Su Tang silently sat down beside Mo Xiao.
Outside the window, the massive scene became smaller and smaller in her vision. Unlike the thick black mist that surrounded the place when they landed, this time, Su Tang truly saw the original appearance of this area. Although it was a wasteland wrapped in yellow sand, some greenery was still revealed not far away. Su Tang knew that was the color of hope. Since plants were willing to grow here, this place would soon recover.
Looking at the scenery outside the window, Su Tang felt a burst of satisfaction in her heart. She was very happy to be able to witness all of this.
“What are you looking at?”
Mo Xiao handed Su Tang a piece of candy. Ever since that incident, Mo Xiao had been busy leading the team to suppress pollutants. This was the first time the two of them had been in such close proximity since then.
The man leaned closer to her, the warm sensation brushing past the tip of her ear. The memories of that day, which she had deliberately tried to forget, swept over her again. Su Tang subconsciously pressed her body closer to the window.
“Nothing, I just think that such vibrant colors look really nice.”
Mo Xiao followed Su Tang’s line of sight out the window.
“Yes, Su Tang. This greenery was born because of you. I want to thank you, thank you for your outstanding contribution to this mission. Thank you, Guide Su Tang.”
The man’s gentle words flowed into her ears one by one. Su Tang turned her head, facing Mo Xiao directly.
“I should be the one saying that to you. This is your merit, the First Squad’s merit.”
“Right, it is the First Squad’s merit.”
Wasn’t Su Tang also the First Squad’s accompanying Guide? Mo Xiao liked the feeling of including Su Tang within his territory.
He was incredibly grateful that after bringing Su Tang back that day, he made her the accompanying Guide. He was incredibly grateful that he was able to meet her that day.
Time flowed bit by bit. Seeing the distance to the White Tower getting closer and closer, the uneasiness suppressed in Su Tang’s heart also began to surge bit by bit.
Although Mo Xiao had found a very appropriate excuse for her, it still couldn’t completely cover up the fact that she had marked Mo Xiao. Moreover, Mo Xiao’s current spiritual stability value had become very low because he was marked by her.
This could be detected with just a slight test. After Sentinels returned from every mission, they would go to the Medical Department to accept a spiritual power test. The test results would be reported to the White Tower high command simultaneously. At that time, there would be many people present; trying to deceive everyone would be as hard as ascending to heaven.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing.”
Su Tang’s gaze looked toward Mo Xiao’s chest again. If—she was saying if—this mark could be taken back, then all problems would be easily solved.
Su Tang’s gaze was very easy to read. Seeing a trace of regret in Su Tang’s eyes as she looked at his chest, Mo Xiao only felt waves of uneasiness rising in his heart.
What was she regretting? Regretting giving him a complete mark?
“It’s okay, don’t worry. Nothing will happen.”
The man’s tone was very certain. Su Tang looked at the man’s expression and nodded slightly.
Although she didn’t know what Mo Xiao planned to do, she believed his words.
The transport plane passed through the clouds, and the outline of the White Tower became clearer and clearer. Just as the transport plane hovered above the White Tower and was about to land, a voice came from the speaker inside the transport plane:
“Attention First Squad, Attention First Squad. The Fifth Squad has completed their mission ahead of schedule and has returned. They have entered the White Tower airspace. Please hover above for a moment and wait for the Fifth Squad to evacuate the airport before landing.”
