Chapter 47: A Chance Encounter with Yasuo
Shen Ji’s words were like a curse, echoing repeatedly in his mind.
“You and I, both of us carry a ticking time bomb on our bodies…”
“Mo Xiao has found his remote control.”
“Is it to carry that time bomb forever, or to seize the chance to live…”
He irritably kicked away a pebble by his feet. Shen Ji’s words kept surging uncontrollably in his heart. He admitted, he was indeed wavering.
Shen Ji was right. He wasn’t willing to carry that time bomb for the rest of his life, he wasn’t willing to let himself become a mass of thoughtless rotting flesh, and he was even less willing to let the old fogeys of the White Tower casually dictate his life and death.
That little Guide named Su Tang…
Did she really have the ability to save him?
For the entire afternoon, Yasuo was restless. He locked himself in his office, unable to stop pondering the authenticity of Shen Ji’s words in his mind.
At dusk, Yasuo simply walked out of the Fifth Squad’s station, wandering aimlessly around the White Tower.
His gaze drifted aimlessly around until it was attracted by that flash of a white silhouette.
It’s her?
Yasuo took a few steps closer.
The woman was sitting on a simple chair, holding that snow-white little fox in her arms. Her head was lowered, seemingly checking something on the fox’s body.
The light of the setting sun fell on the tips of her hair, glowing with a soft golden edge. The contour of her side profile was clean and gentle.
Neither Mo Xiao nor Zhan Ye were by her side. If one ignored that stupid fox in her arms, it was truly as beautiful as a painting.
Looking at the culprit who had disrupted his thoughts for the whole day sitting right there, Yasuo uncontrollably leaned over.
His footsteps carried an undeniable roguishness. The soles of his shoes ground against the floor, the clack, clack sound drawing closer and closer to her. Su Tang looked up, only to see the same unruly, handsome face from earlier that day, closing in on her bit by bit.
The little fox in her arms seemed to have been frightened; it pricked up its two ears, watching the approaching man warily.
Its beautiful, large white tail stood erect. The fine, soft fur brushed past Su Tang’s face every now and then, bringing waves of a slight, ticklish sensation. Su Tang subconsciously leaned back, avoiding that tormenting touch.
The man stood right beside her. There was clearly a seat nearby, yet he didn’t take it. Instead, he half-squatted in front of her. His tall figure slowly cast a shadow over her; even in a squatting posture, he was a head taller than her.
“Hey, Mo Xiao’s little Guide, is that special spiritual power of yours innate?”
Yasuo suddenly spoke, causing Su Tang to freeze for a moment.
Just as she was about to speak, she saw the man in front of her shift his gaze to the little fox in her arms. His fingertips even reached out to poke it in a completely lackadaisical manner.
“Careful.”
Right after they finished discussing matters, Xiao Wei had just somehow gotten into a fight with the Silver Wolf and the others. Mo Xiao had dragged Zhan Ye and thrown him back to the Third Squad, while the Silver Wolf left carrying the Golden Eagle in its mouth.
Anse was called back by a phone call from the Medical Department, leaving behind Xiao Wei, who was sulking and absolutely refused to go back no matter what.
Perhaps because it had lost the group fight, the hostility on Xiao Wei right now was terrifyingly explosive. Before leaving, Anse had entrusted her to take care of it, saying he would pick it up later.
But Xiao Wei was like a rebellious child, rampaging outside. She had finally managed to catch Xiao Wei and bring it back. She had just sat down here and hadn’t even soothed it yet when Yasuo came over.
The fox opened its mouth and bit down with an awoo. The sharp fox fangs pierced his skin, and blood-red liquid dripped down drop by drop. However, the bitten man acted as if he had no pain receptors; there was no sign of pain on his face. Instead, he let out a scoff.
“That old fogey Anse’s fox is truly pampered; it bites at the slightest touch.”
He shook his finger, forcefully making the fox let go of its mouth.
Su Tang hugged the fox tighter into her arms. Afraid that Yasuo would make things difficult for a fox, she shrank her body back a bit.
“Sorry, Xiao Wei is in a bad mood today. It didn’t mean to bite Captain Yasuo on purpose.”
Heh.
She sure was quite protective of another Sentinel’s spiritual entity.
It seemed that guy Shen Ji’s intelligence wasn’t accurate either. Didn’t he say that only Zhan Ye and Captain Mo had a bond with her? When did that old fox Anse get involved too?
“Relax, I wouldn’t go as far as to get angry at a little beast.”
Watching Su Tang’s persistent action of protecting the little cub in her arms, an indescribable surge of anger flared up in Yasuo’s heart. In her heart, was he such an unreasonable person?
“Captain Yasuo came over, is there something the matter?”
Su Tang deliberately avoided Yasuo’s initial question, smoothly starting to change the subject.
“Can’t I just look if there’s nothing the matter?”
Yasuo raised an eyebrow. From his angle, the little Guide was looking down at the fox in her arms. Her fair face looked exceptionally soft and cute under the illumination of the setting sun.
Before Su Tang could even realize it, he suddenly reached out and pinched her cheek.
“Tsk tsk, the skin is quite tender. No wonder Mo Xiao and Zhan Ye are fighting over it like fighting for a bone.”
“You!”
Su Tang fiercely swatted his hand away. Her cheeks instantly flushed red, like a provoked little rabbit.
“Captain Yasuo, please show some self-respect!”
“Self-respect?”
Yasuo laughed, as if he had heard some novel vocabulary, laughing increasingly unbridled.
“Talking about self-respect in the White Tower? Is it your first day here?”
On the back of his hand, the spot where the little Guide had swatted inexplicably carried a bit of numbness, just as if it had been licked by the barbs on a feline’s tongue. It was so unbearable that a wave of irritability surged in his heart.
Su Tang pursed her lips tightly.
“Since you’ve already come to the White Tower, you must also familiarize yourself with the White Tower’s survival guide. Having been here for so many days, haven’t you seen how other Guides live?”
Of course she knew. Su Tang’s gaze darkened.
There weren’t many Guides inside the White Tower, yet the number of Sentinels was frighteningly massive. At every moment, there were Sentinels returning from outside missions needing a Guide’s channeling. To get twice the result with half the effort and save their own spiritual power, some Guides would choose to directly provide their Guide pheromones to soothe the Sentinels. There were even some who, for the sake of efficiency, directly had multiple people absorb the Guide pheromones together.
She had seen all of these outside the Guides’ treatment rooms. The moral bottom line inside the White Tower was pulled extremely low. Powerful Guides could keep a portion of Sentinels captive for their own use, and even powerful Sentinels could imprison exclusive Guides. As long as the Guide’s rank wasn’t high, the White Tower’s high command would turn a blind eye to such matters.
“So you see, naive little Guide, the word ‘self-respect’ is such a laughable vocabulary inside the White Tower.”
Looking at the innocent little Guide sitting there blankly, not saying a word, Yasuo slowly curled his lips.
“I heard people say that your spiritual power can easily soothe the consciousness sea of a Super S-Class Sentinel. How do you do it?”
She certainly knew that within the White Tower, power was the absolute right to speak. Therefore, before she fully grew strong, she absolutely wouldn’t let the outside world know about her special spiritual power.
