Chapter 56. Agreeing to Go
A’ning saw Su Tang retreating, her face instantly turned red. She really had no other choice to bring this up, and hurriedly waved her hands.
“No, Guide Su, I don’t have the slightest intention to threaten you.”
She was so anxious that sweat broke out on the tip of her nose. The orange cat resting in her spiritual consciousness sea was suddenly popped out due to its master’s emotional turmoil. It stood on the girl’s shoulder, raising its tail uneasily.
“Please rest assured, our captain has warned us about your spiritual power, and we haven’t leaked it to the outside.”
“Guide Su, I know I’m a jerk for bringing up the matter of marking right now, but… but Captain Yasuo really can’t hold on much longer.”
A’ning pursed her lips tightly, looking at Su Tang with pleading eyes.
“Before going on the mission, the captain’s riot value was already very high. During this mission, the Fifth Squad encountered an Abyss species we had never seen before and suffered heavy losses. The captain used beastification under a high riot value to bring us back from the Deep Abyss. He was on the verge of spiritual power collapse several times.”
“The day before yesterday, I heard the captain applied to go to the Abyss again. We all knew he wanted to make the battlefield his final destination, but the White Tower rejected his dispatch application. The captain heard it was under the instruction of Department Head Anse, so he lost control of his emotions on the spot and rushed to the Medical Department.”
“I can feel that the captain’s spiritual power is in total chaos and is about to collapse soon. Department Head Anse couldn’t suppress him and could only trap him in the treatment chair…”
A’ning’s voice softened, laced with helplessness, looking at Su Tang as if she wanted to say something but stopped.
Su Tang leaned against the doorframe, her fingertips unconsciously rubbing her wristband. She understood A’ning’s meaning—she hoped she would go and provide channeling for Yasuo. But why should she?
“This is a matter between the two of them. As a Guide from another squad, it’s really not convenient for me to intervene.”
“Moreover, even if I go, I might not be of any use. After all, your captain doesn’t seem to like me very much.”
For things like purification, it always requires mutual willingness to yield twice the result with half the effort.
The ending of their last meeting couldn’t be considered pleasant.
“No, the captain actually likes you quite a bit.”
A’ning said hurriedly, then feeling this statement was too abrupt, she scratched her head, her voice lowering.
Hm?
Likes?
Judging from the situation of their last meeting, she hadn’t seen a single bit of that. To him, she was clearly no different from a pleasing toy he could tease.
“Our captain has a rather strange personality. When it comes to people or things he’s interested in, he always can’t help but want to tease them.”
Su Tang raised her eyebrows slightly. Recalling Yasuo’s punchable look when he pinched her earlobe, she didn’t reply.
A’ning bit her lip. Seeing Su Tang looking unmoved, she continued speaking.
“Also, last time at the Supply Station, we were actually in constant contact with the captain. It was also him who told us to protect your safety and let you leave first. The captain actually quite likes you; he just has a foul mouth.”
That guy didn’t just have a foul mouth; his hands were also quite restless.
“Three years ago, when we were on a mission, the work that was about to wrap up was interrupted by an upgraded pollutant. The squad lost more than half of its members. It was the captain who risked being polluted to finish off that pollutant. I hadn’t been in the squad for long at the time and lacked experience, and I was tied up by a plant-type pollutant during the clearing process.”
“It was the captain who yanked me back.”
A’ning lowered her head, as if falling into a certain memory.
“When going out on missions, the captain always charges at the very front. Because of our squad’s special nature, some dangerous missions requiring deep infiltration are handed over to us. The Sentinels in the squad always have to be replaced by more than half before even doing two missions. No one wants to watch their comrades die on the battlefield, yet this kind of thing frequently plays out among us all the time. He has always been protecting us in his own way.”
“Over so many years, his pollution value is the highest in the entire Tower. Seeing his calm and breezy look usually, we even… we didn’t even know that suppressants were no longer effective on him…”
A’ning’s voice trembled slightly, and her somewhat heavy breathing echoed in the quiet corridor. The girl suppressed her sad emotions, her voice becoming increasingly low.
“He is just like that, speaking words uglier than anyone else, but his heart is the softest.”
“Guide Su, I know you have no obligation to help him.”
A’ning’s voice lightened a bit, carrying a touch of self-mockery.
“For Sentinels like us, we were born already prepared to be treated as abandoned pawns. I just don’t want… I don’t want such a good captain to end up losing his mind and becoming like those monsters in the end.”
The orange cat on her shoulder pressed its two small front paws together, waving them up and down slightly, striking a begging posture.
“We don’t dare to extravagantly hope you would do any deep purification. The captain’s current riot value is too high; doing that would also pose a danger to you.”
“I just wanted to… to trouble Guide Su to go over and take a look, even if it’s just a shallow purification, so that the captain’s current state won’t be so broken, to buy him a bit more lucid time…”
Let the captain have a bit more lucid time, which would also give Department Head Anse more time to develop a more potent suppressant. She only begged for this much, not daring to hope for too much.
“Is it okay, Guide Su? Representing all the Sentinels of the Fifth Squad, I sincerely beseech you, beseech you to help our captain do a shallow purification, to extend his living time a bit longer. I’m begging you, Guide Su.”
Su Tang leaned against the doorframe, the movement of her fingertips stopping.
The corridor was very quiet, with A’ning’s suppressed breathing intertwining with the orange cat’s soft whimpering. She had to admit, the girl’s plea was very moving. She remained silent for a full half-minute before finally making a move.
She stood straight and pulled her jacket closer.
“Let’s go.”
A’ning jerked her head up, tears of joy instantly welling up in her eyes.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but ultimately it only turned into a forceful nod.
“But wait for me for a bit, I need to go change my clothes.”
A’ning nodded repeatedly.
“Okay, Guide Su. Thank you! If there is any place you need the Fifth Squad, just say the word, and we will definitely go through fire and water without hesitation.”
“This phrasing sounds a bit retro.”
Su Tang smiled at A’ning, turned around and returned to her bedroom, and changed out of her pajamas.
She didn’t know if this decision of hers was right, nor did she know if she would regret it in the future, let alone if this shallow purification could really help him.
But she remembered A’ning’s phrase “don’t want the captain to become a monster,” and remembered the admiration filling her voice when she mentioned Yasuo. This time, it had nothing to do with anything else; it only related to two words:
Worth it.
Whether as the White Tower’s top Sentinel or the captain of the Fifth Squad, Yasuo shouldn’t end up with such a fate.
Never mind, just consider it as a reward for him hiding her spiritual power on her behalf.
Re-opening the dormitory door, seeing A’ning standing in the corridor, staring at her eagerly for fear that she would back out in the next second, Su Tang couldn’t help but smile.
“Relax, I haven’t backed out.”
“However, if we get to the scene and your bad-tempered captain makes me angry, I might just walk right away, you know.”
