Chapter 61. Pink HemlineĀ
Su Tang reached out, gesturing for Zhan Ye to come inside.
“A mission to the Abyss? What kind of mission? Do you know the specifics?”
“Of course. Iām the captain of the Third Squad, after all. How could they not tell me the mission details?”
Zhan Ye sat down on the sofa without the slightest hint of ceremony.
“I heard itās related to the mission the Fifth Squad carried out recently. During their last deployment, they suddenly discovered a large number of high-level contaminants that had never been seen before. During the withdrawal, Ya Suo discovered an area with massive energy fluctuations. He even vaguely felt that most of those high-level contaminants were concentrated there. After he returned, he reported it to the Bai Ta. The higher-ups have been sending stealth-specialized Sentinels in batches to investigate over the past few days.”
“As it turns out, the area Ya Suo found with the intense spiritual fluctuations is occupied by a massive white creature. Mo Xiao was shown the images of that creature, and he said it looks quite similar to that new contaminant you encountered on your last mission.”
It couldn’t be that disgusting, maggot-like creature, could it?
Su Tang frowned. The one from last time hadn’t been that large. For Zhan Ye to use the word “massive,” just how nauseating must the imagery be?
“According to the Sentinels stationed there for observation, that thing seems to be something like an insect’s cocoon. It can continuously split off contaminants, and every single one is high-level. The Bai Ta is worried that the longer this drags on, the higher the grade of these contaminants will become. So, they plan to send a team to blow that cocoon up.”
“Originally, this mission was supposed to be given to the Fifth Squadāsince they have high stealth and enough experience in the Abyssācombined with our Third Squad. But who wouldāve thought that guy Ya Suo would suddenly have a spiritual power mishap? As for the Second Squadās Shen Ji, you already know his current condition. So, the mission has fallen to the only available team left in the Bai Ta: the First Squad.”
To blow up that cocoon meant facing the danger of numerous newly-born, high-level contaminants. They were all unknown entities with unknown weaknesses. The danger level of this mission was exceptionally high.
“Those old fogies at the Bai Ta ordered the First and Third Squads to bring at least half of their personnel. The mission rating has reached S+.”
An S+ mission meant a narrow escape from death.
“So, little beauty, thatās why Iām here today. The Guide Protection Association stipulates that for missions Grade A and above, if a Guide accompanies the team, they must have an exclusive Sentinel for close protection.”
“Sister, Iāve come today to volunteer myself. A guy like Mo Xiao will definitely be unable to look after you once heās on the battlefield. Since this mission is so dangerous, why donāt you let me be your exclusive Sentinel instead?”
Su Tang arched an eyebrow. He called her “Sister” whenever he needed a favor; this guy really knew how to be flexible when the situation called for it.
“Mo Xiao is the captain of the First Squad, but aren’t you also the captain of the Third? If you become my exclusive Sentinel, you wonāt have time to lead your team.”
“Thatās fine. I donāt usually go to training anyway. My Vice Captainās experience in leading isnāt any worse than mine.”
It was her first time seeing someone admit to slacking off and neglecting their duties with such righteous conviction.
“So, Sister, I am the most suitable exclusive Sentinel for you.”
At some point, Zhan Ye had rested his head against the back of the sofa. He gave her a flirtatious wink, shamelessly putting his seductive intent on full display.
Su Tang: Heh.
“Iām sorry, but Iām not really interested in a flamboyant exclusive Sentinel like you.”
Just thinking about those embarrassing clothes in her closet made her want to throw a punch.
“We haven’t seen each other for a few days, so why are you suddenly so angry with me? Donāt tell me you don’t like my outgoing type and prefer a block of wood like Mo Xiao?”
Zhan Ye suddenly remembered that he had been sending his Golden Eagle to find Su Tang to nurture their feelings over the past few days, but it had been turned away every single time. He couldn’t help but feel bewildered. Su Tang had never been this resistant to him before. Could it be that someone had taken advantage of his absence to say something to slander him?
“I think there’s no need to sugarcoat yourself. You call that ‘outgoing’? That’s clearly called being ‘shameless’.”
“And those things you put in my closetātake them away as soon as possible.”
Su Tang walked into the bedroom, brought down the box from the top of the wardrobe, and set it down in front of Zhan Ye.
“I thought someone was gossiping behind my back, but it turns out you’re angry with me because of this. Don’t these clothes look good?”
Zhan Ye opened the box and hooked a light pink ribbon with his index finger. The bling-bling dress was lifted by him. Seeing that eye-searing dress again made Su Tang’s brow twitch violently.
“You think this looks good?”
Zhan Ye nodded repeatedly, his fingertips idly brushing over the layers of lace.
“Doesn’t it look good? It’s pink, tender, and sparkly. How beautiful and cute would it be to wear this?”
“…”
Su Tang gave Zhan Ye a strange look. She had only heard of crows liking shiny things before; she hadn’t realized this trait was common among all birds.
Seeing Su Tang’s expression of utter disgust, Zhan Ye lowered his head and pursed his lips. He had heard from other Sentinels in the squad who had received Guide counseling before that little Guides liked things that were pink, tender, and pretty. This was the pinkest, prettiest, and sparkliest thing he had managed to find in the Bai Ta with great effort. He had thought Su Tang would like it.
Could it be that I was wrong? Do Guides not like this kind of clothing?
“Why are you putting it away? You don’t like it? How about I go with you to buy some new ones?”
“No need. Iāve already bought some myself. You should just take these things back.”
What would he take them back for? He doesn’t wear them.
Zhan Ye pursed his lips, a sense of defeat surging as he looked at the clothes in the box.
“Fine. Since you’ve already bought some yourself, I’ll transfer some points to you.”
Zhan Ye swiped his wristband. Su Tang looked down and saw a notification that 100,000 points had arrived. She remained silent; he shouldn’t think a little money could extinguish her anger.
Zhan Ye lowered his head and flipped through the other neatly folded clothes in the box. Suddenly, his fingers touched a bag. He nimbly untied the knot, and upon seeing the piles of provocative little things inside, the tips of his ears turned slightly red.
“Ahemā”
“Do you really not like a single one of these? I rushed to the supply station overnight to buy them. I heard that you… ahem, it’s not good to wear them directly after buying, so I’ve already washed them for you. You can wear them directly.”
As Zhan Ye spoke, he peeked secretly in Su Tang’s direction. Su Tang felt her vision go dark. Whoāwho wants them? Who would want to wear something he washed?!
“I wouldn’t be this angry if you hadn’t mentioned that. Tell me, are you a dog? I wonāt even bring up the fact that you messed up the clothes in my closet, but why did you have to touch my… my…!”
Su Tang’s words got stuck in her throat, her cheeks flushing a deep red.
Looking at Su Tang’s flushed face and thinking about the absurd thing he had done back then, Zhan Yeās ears turned completely red. He unconsciously tightened his grip on the lace in his hand, but in the next second, he guiltily let go, tied the bag shut, and stuffed it to the very bottom of the box.
“I…”
Zhan Ye opened his mouth, his voice hoarse. His usual roguish air had vanished, replaced only by the embarrassment and guilt of being caught.
“I didn’t do it on purpose… during those few days… Sister, you know how it was, right? My rut was really too painful to bear…”
By the end, Zhan Ye felt utterly ashamed. At the time, his mind had been clouded by lust, and his entire body was controlled by surging emotions. Not only did he take them, but he even used those things to do many excessive things that he wouldn’t dare let Su Tang find out about.
