Chapter 90: Returning to the White Tower
The heavy scent of disinfectant seeped into her nostrils bit by bit. Su Tang felt her throat itch from the smell.
Where was she? Was she dead? Why was “Heaven” filled with the pungent scent of the White Tower’s Medical Department?
Her long eyelashes fluttered a few times before she managed to pry her eyes open. Warm sunlight filtered in. Su Tang closed her eyes, and after fully adapting, she opened them again.
The first thing she saw was the pure white ceiling unique to the White Tower. The warm sunlight on her body radiated flecks of warmth. It was no longer the damp cold of the cave, and the fishy stench that had filled her nose was gone, replaced by the scent of disinfectant that actually brought her some peace of mind.
Su Tang blinked, her vision slowly focusing. She found a transparent IV drip inserted into her wrist, cold liquid slowly being funneled into her body.
“You’re awake?”
Anse’s voice sounded beside her, carrying a soft tone he had deliberately lowered. Su Tang turned her head. The slight pain in her neck as she moved made her frown instinctively. Anse stood by her bed, the sleeves of his white coat rolled up to his forearms, revealing his wrists. He was holding an unfolded test report.
“Anse…”
Su Tang opened her mouth, but her throat felt like it was clogged with sandpaper. The voice that came out was hoarse and unpleasant. Suddenly inhaling air made her throat feel painfully dry, and she couldn’t help but cough.
As her chest vibrated, a familiar dull pain echoed from the depths of her Sea of Consciousness. Su Tang reached out with her free hand to rub her temple, trying to relax her tensed nerves.
“Don’t be in a hurry to talk. Drink some water first.”
Seeing Su Tang coughing until she was out of breath, Anse quickly put down the report, poured a cup of warm water from a nearby kettle, and handed it to her.
“You’ve been unconscious for three whole days. There isn’t a part of your body that hasn’t been damaged. Your vocal cords are just unaccustomed to talking after being silent for so long; there’s nothing wrong with them. Don’t rush.”
The cool water moistened her parched lips, and her coughing slowly stopped. As the warm water flowed down her esophagus and warmed her cold body, Su Tang squinted in comfort.
“Drink slowly. Let me tell you about your current physical condition.”
Anse’s brow was furrowed tight as he stared at the girl sitting in bed, sipping the warm water. The stiff curve of his lips revealed his current displeasure.
“Your body is extremely weak. All the data shows that your spirit power has been severely overextended. While it is slowly recovering for some unknown reason, the damage to your Sea of Consciousness has not improved. That’s why you likely feel a frequent dull pain in your mind.”
Su Tang nodded. Once her throat was moistened, she didn’t want to drink anymore. She gripped the cup in her palm, drawing warmth from the glass. She could indeed feel that while the emptiness of her spirit power was gone, her Sea of Consciousness felt like it was being ground down by a soft knife bit by bit. The dull pain hit her every moment; it was truly hard to endure.
“The depletion of your Sea of Consciousness is too severe. I don’t know what you did, but it looks like it was maliciously scoured multiple times. Your spirit barrier is so fragile it can’t be touched.”
Anse suppressed the irritation in his voice. He still remembered the scene when he and Ya Suo flew the plane to the Abyss. The girl was like a ragdoll in Mo Xiao’s arms, radiating no warmth at all. Just thinking about that image made the irritability in his heart surge.
“Also, the Spirit Core in your mind is gone, replaced by a pale blue light cluster. Did you force your spiritual entity to awaken?”
Su Tang pursed her lips and nodded at Anse. The man seemed furious; he pointed a finger at her, but because she was an injured patient, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh.
“What am I going to do with you? Do you know how much damage this does to your body? Your spiritual entity is currently in a deep sleep for some reason—likely related to the forced awakening. However, I’ve investigated thoroughly, and it isn’t damaged. Once your body is nursed back to health, it will slowly wake up.”
Su Tang breathed a sigh of relief. As long as the outcome wasn’t bad.
She slowly raised her hands. Her fingertips still seemed to hold the sensation of touching bloody liquid. Su Tang suddenly remembered Zhan Ye. She looked up and spoke urgently.
“What about Zhan Ye? How is his condition?”
Her hoarse voice sounded like a broken gong. Anse frowned, took the cup from Su Tang, and poured the cooled liquid into a nearby sink. He refilled it with warm water and put it back in her hand.
“His situation is not optimistic.”
Su Tang’s breath hitched. The heat beneath her palm seemed unable to provide any more warmth, and her fingertips grew colder.
“His external injuries are under control, and his blood loss has been replenished through transfusions. He is out of immediate life-threatening danger, but…” He paused. “The problem lies in his heart.”
“He stayed in the polluted zone for too long. The wound on his chest was constantly exposed to the mist. Those pollutants and other contaminants in the cave have entered his body, and because the wound is close to major blood vessels, the pollutants have spread throughout his system.”
Anse’s voice grew heavy.
“He is still unconscious. The pollution in his body is eroding his Sea of Consciousness. It’s not just him; the Golden Eagle is also affected and has fallen into a coma. I’ve placed them in medical pods for isolation. While we can temporarily stop the pollution from worsening, we cannot cure it.”
Su Tang stared blankly at the ceiling, her ears ringing. Her fingers began to tremble involuntarily. It was her fault. At the time, she only thought about using her spirit power to seal his wound; she forgot to help him expel the pollution. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be in such a dangerous state.
Thinking back to the slimy sensation of her hand covering the bloody hole, Su Tang felt as if she could smell the fishy stench of the cave again.
“I want to go see him.”
