Chapter 32 The Offensive
Although there weren’t many zombies inside the mall, a significant number were gathering from the street behind, likely under the control of the psychic zombie spirit.
Seeing this, Su Mo, gun raised, kicked open the glass door beside her. She surveyed the area, grabbed a short, thick iron bar from a corner, and wedged it behind the door.
Just as she secured the bar, a zombie slammed into the door with a “bang,” the bloody body’s impact causing the door to shake and crack. More zombies roared and surged forward.
Soon, a horde of zombies was outside the door, gnashing their teeth at the two inside. Many tried to squeeze through the cracks, their eyes bulging, pus dripping, and decaying arms flailing wildly; the sight was horrifying.
“Ten minutes, max,” Su Mo said coldly, frowning at the bent iron bar.
“Then we need to hurry,” Shen Shao Jie said calmly, despite the surrounding zombies. His phoenix eyes scanned the zombies on the upper floor, his voice lazy, “You lead, I’ll cover your rear. How’s that?”
Su Mo glanced at him, snorting, “The early bird gets the worm, you’re quite bold.”
He chuckled, unfazed by the sarcasm, his devilish face lifting slightly. “After all, you’re more familiar with that zombie, aren’t you?”
She rolled her eyes. He was clearly a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a sanctimonious hypocrite.
Muttering under her breath, Su Mo ran towards the second floor.
The dirty stairs were covered in blood; dismembered limbs emanated a putrid smell. Zombies, ragged and disfigured, roamed the hallway, as if waiting for her arrival.
Even without eyes, the zombies lunged at her as she approached.
Dodging a flying zombie, Su Mo drew a butterfly knife from her waist. Her eyes were cold as she aimed and threw the knife towards the zombies on the opposite stairs.
“Whizz… Whizz…”
The knife, propelled by powerful force, sliced through the air in a silver arc, beautiful yet deadly fast, almost impossible to track with the naked eye.
A red mist of blood sprayed wherever it passed.
A “thunk” echoed as the knife embedded itself in the wall at the end of the hallway, testament to its force. The attacking zombies fell one by one, their death growls accompanied by varying degrees of wounds.
Quickly retrieving the knife, Su Mo smiled, “Different approaches have different results.”
The knife seemed normal, but upon closer inspection, purple streaks pulsed around its blade, accompanied by the faint sound of thunder.
Before she could study it further, a chilling presence emerged from behind. Gripping the knife, she quickly turned.
A “bang” echoed as a black-faced zombie, blood and pus streaming from its eyes, fell to the ground before she could react.
Relief washed over her. Just as she was about to thank him, an icy voice echoed in her ear, “That habit of yours, zoning out, I think I need to have a serious discussion with you about it.”
Wiping the smoke from his gun barrel, Shen Shao Jie approached, his face a mix of amusement and seriousness. His presence carried a sense of danger.
Annoyed, Su Mo glared at him. She was always careless around him. “I don’t need to discuss anything with you,” she said angrily.
Turning, she charged towards the second floor, leaving Shen Shao Jie alone.
Stroking his chin as he watched her go, Shen Shao Jie mused, Hmm, they say shy people get angry easily. What a proud little thing.
He should go and coax her; Mong Yong said that angry people get sick easily. He couldn’t let this interesting little thing get sick.
Just then, a commotion and growls echoed from the stairs. Shen Shao Jie turned, his eyes widening momentarily before he shook his head and frowned, “So ugly. Probably no brain power to exploit.”
With a smile, a dark mist swirling in his eyes, he lightly snapped his fingers, “Then there’s no point in their existence.”
…
The dark hallway was full of danger, filled with decay, and the dripping sounds were accompanied by the stench of blood.
Carefully stepping onto the last stair, Su Mo vigilantly scanned her surroundings.
Unlike the first floor, the second floor was eerily quiet.
Gripping her knife, she took a few steps forward, her eyes narrowed.
From the moment she entered the building, she had sensed the turbulent energy inside. Even on the first floor, she had felt the immense pressure above; it couldn’t have simply disappeared.
Just then, a terrifying aura rose from behind, accompanied by a horrifying shriek that echoed through the hallway. Her eyes widened in shock as she spun around.
Placing a hand on her silenced pistol, Su Mo held her breath and slowly walked down the hallway.
A faint light flickered in the dark hallway. The confined space was damp and smelled of decay.
A worry flickered in her eyes as she thought of the handsome man. Her heart skipped a beat.
They were parallel lines, mere passersby, their encounter a coincidence. She should have left, but remembering how he had saved her twice, her feet felt heavy.
Su Mo pressed her lips together, a frosty expression on her face, her heart conflicted.
Suddenly, her past life flashed through her mind. The man, in all his glory, stood like an emperor, overlooking the world, revered by millions. Even if he couldn’t save the world, he was the hope of billions, the pride of humanity.
His life shouldn’t end here.
Suddenly, as if understanding something, her grip on her gun tightened, and she quickly rushed downstairs.
But as she reached the bend, a hidden figure emerged from the darkness.
Raising her gun, Su Mo saw Shen Shao Jie. The weight on her heart lifted, relief washing over her. She glanced past him, “Something sounded like it was moving downstairs just now.”
Lightly tapping the trigger of his submachine gun, Shen Shao Jie said casually, “Oh really?”
Seeing her staring intently at him, a strange light flickered in his eyes. Then, smiling slightly, he said softly, “You’re worried about me?”
“Bullshit!” she exclaimed roughly.
Embarrassed by her outburst, Su Mo’s face flushed crimson.
Seeing his playful smirk, her face burned. “What are you looking at? Let’s go!”
Turning away, Su Mo wanted to slap herself. Damn it, this devil couldn’t be dead so easily. What a waste.
