Chapter 16: Missing You
Wei Shao Cheng, still standing there, looked at him with that strange expression again, his tone cold and serious. “Since you’re a bodyguard, do your job well. The company won’t treat you badly. You’re young, so strive for a good future.”
Mu Jiashu swallowed the words he was about to say, utterly confused by Wei Shao Cheng’s meaning.
From the moment he entered with Wei Xun, he had noticed the strange reactions of Wei’s parents. He had tried to probe with his greeting and found their discomfort wasn’t about mistaking Shen Shu for him, but their focus was on how he ended up at Dingfeng Company… Why?
The most logical guess was that they suspected someone was using Shen Shu’s resemblance to Mu Jiashu to gain Wei Xun’s sympathy, achieving some ulterior motive…
But that was far-fetched. Usually, such “beauty tricks” or “body double plots” happened between lovers. It wasn’t like Wei Xun needed a replacement to mourn his friend, so there must be another reason.
Mu Jiashu pondered this, his expression calm and natural. He said, “Commissar Wei, I understand.”
Wei Shao Cheng’s words reminded him that many things were suspicious. It wasn’t a good time to reveal his true identity, especially since he had overlooked something: people like the Weis constantly received visits from those seeking to curry favor. Even if he wanted to explain, they might not believe the bizarre story of his rebirth.
Mu Jiashu didn’t say anything else. Wei Shao Cheng looked at him again before turning and leaving.
Wei Xun watched his father’s back, hesitant. He turned to Mu Jiashu, “Let’s go upstairs.”
There was a room reserved for him on the second floor. Mu Jiashu, though familiar with the Wei house, acted reserved, following Wei Xun up the wooden spiral staircase.
Wei Xun paused at Mu Jiashu’s room before going to the opposite one and opening the door.
Wei Xun said, “Stay in this guest room. I’ll have the housekeeper bring you some clean bedding.”
Mu Jiashu said, “Thank you, Young Master Wei.”
Wei Xun seemed not to hear, standing still until, after a long moment, Mu Jiashu looked up at him curiously, and he finally seemed to snap out of it. “Are… are you hungry? Did you have dinner? I haven’t eaten yet. Would you like to have something with me?”
Mu Jiashu said, “No need…”
Wei Xun decided, “Wait for me downstairs; I’ll get something to eat!”
Mu Jiashu: “…”
This guy was much more approachable now.
Wei Xun, feeling guilty after angering his parents, didn’t dare eat downstairs. He went downstairs, gave instructions to the housekeeper, and soon returned with a tray upstairs, containing some small dishes and two bowls of silver ear bird’s nest soup.
Mu Jiashu knew Jiang Shu was from the south and liked making these things. The Wei family always had this soup prepared.
The small dishes were mostly cold dishes and ready-made braised meats. He glanced at the tray and was struck by the red chilies in a dish of pine nut potato shreds.
At least a quarter of the potato shreds were chilies. Apparently, the housekeeper Zhao’s cooking had become extremely spicy… Who was she trying to kill?
Mu Jiashu stood up, taking the tray and placing it on the coffee table, “Thank you, Young Master Wei.”
Wei Xun picked up a bowl of bird’s nest soup, “Eat.”
Mu Jiashu was actually hungry, so he ate a spoonful without hesitation.
Wow! So sweet.
Several extremely spicy dishes paired with overly sweet bird’s nest soup – the most bizarre combination he had ever seen.
Mu Jiashu knew Wei Xun had an unusual palate after eating in the army for years. He ate anything, but in the past, he had always catered to Mu Jiashu’s preference. Now, after the body swap, his taste preferences seemed to have changed as well.
Mu Jiashu had always had a delicate diet due to his health, avoiding spicy food, giving the impression he was a picky eater. Shen Shu had a stronger palate, accepting any flavor; influenced by this, he found the combination odd but enjoyable.
Wei Xun, when bringing the food, had held some peculiar expectations. He ate listlessly, then saw Mu Jiashu particularly enjoying the potato shreds he had specifically asked the housekeeper to make extra spicy, suddenly losing his appetite.
Mu Jiashu looked up from his meal, seeing Wei Xun staring at him. “Young Master Wei?”
“Is it delicious?” Wei Xun felt an indescribable disappointment, asking in a sullen tone.
Seeing him toss his chopsticks on the table, Mu Jiashu said, “It’s quite good. What do you think, Young Master Wei?”
Wei Xun said stiffly, “I think it’s not tasty.”
Mu Jiashu: “…”
How was he supposed to respond?
Wei Xun had lost his appetite. “After you finish, take the plates downstairs to Aunt Zhao. I’m full.”
He turned and left, returning to his bedroom. He sat on the floor, leaning against the door, burying his head deeply.
In the room next door, Mu Jiashu, having understood, slowly put down his spoon and sighed.
He took the plates downstairs, asked Aunt Zhao for bedding, and lay down fully clothed. The room hadn’t been used for years, though clean, it felt strangely cold.
After a year, he returned to the Wei family, but as a stranger.
Mu Jiashu tossed and turned, unable to sleep. After a long time, he sat up, opening the curtains slightly to look out – directly across from his old bedroom window, very close.
It was late at night, the Mu house was dark, and nothing was visible.
Mu Jiashu lowered his gaze, about to close the curtains, when a loud “bang” came from the door of the opposite room, then silence.
That was his old room in the Wei house; it shouldn’t be occupied. Mu Jiashu was surprised, quietly getting out of bed to listen. He heard rustling sounds, worried about Wei Xun, not knowing what was happening, so he went out.
The corridor was dark, but the opposite room was open, with the curtains not drawn. In the moonlight, he saw a dark figure sitting inside, the smell of alcohol wafting out.
Mu Jiashu frowned, walking over and turning on the light.
Wei Xun sat on the floor with half a glass of liquor in his left hand, shielding his eyes. He looked up, displeased at Mu Jiashu.
Mu Jiashu said, “I thought there was a burglar.”
This kid is really naive; even if a burglar went crazy and tried to steal here, the guards at the entrance wouldn’t be decoration.
Wei Xun slightly curved his lips, not explaining, “No, go back to sleep. Oh, Pang Xing is taking leave tomorrow, you have to go out with me.”
Mu Jiashu still didn’t understand Wei Xun’s trust in Pang Xing. The name evoked unpleasant feelings, his brow furrowed slightly, but he still said, “Young Master Wei has to work tomorrow, you should also go to bed early.”
Hearing this, Wei Xun looked up at Mu Jiashu, hesitantly saying, “Or… why don’t you sit here with me for a while?”
This room had been locked for a year, and he hadn’t dared to enter. He thought that missing someone would fade without a physical object as a focus.
But he realized how naive that was. He felt his heart filled with longing.
Forgetting couldn’t be forced. Rooms could be locked, things could be hidden, but how could one put away feelings for a person?
He hadn’t entered this room for almost a year, and after drinking, he impulsively came in, silently reminiscing in the darkness.
Only after Mu Jiashu turned on the light did Wei Xun clearly see everything—as it was in the past, time seemed to be frozen here.
The photos on the wall, the piano across the table, a basketball carelessly tossed in the corner… with Kobe’s signature. Mu Jiashu couldn’t do strenuous exercise, but he liked Kobe Bryant, and had someone get him this ball as a birthday gift, but he hadn’t had a chance to give it to him.
Memories flooded back like a deep blue sea, threatening to drown him. Wei Xun didn’t want to be alone but couldn’t leave. He desperately needed someone’s company.
Fortunately, Mu Jiashu readily agreed, ignoring the dust on the floor, sitting cross-legged beside him.
