Chapter 13: Hallucinogenic Fog
The sound of the giant trees crashing to the ground naturally attracted a large number of pollution entities.
Most of these pollution entities turned out to be Sentinels. Dragging their broken, grotesque bodies, they charged toward Chi Wan and the others like a mindless army of puppets.
The main force of Sentinels waiting in the rear received the order and rushed over to assemble immediately.
A fierce battle erupted within the dense pollution fog.
However, the battle did not last long before the pollution entities all retreated, as if summoned by something.
“Do we pursue, Commander?!” asked a Sentinel from A3 Base.
“Pursue.”
People from all three bases gave chase simultaneously.
“Look at the direction of their retreat; it’s exactly where the pollution source is.”
Qi Ye glanced at the information detected by the pollution scanner on his optical computer.
“There is a high probability that a high-level pollution entity has summoned them back to guard the pollution source.”
The group quickly chased them to the outside of a shattered underground structure.
This artificially excavated underground structure, located in the middle of the forest, was concealed and eerie.
There was not a trace of life.
The ruined steel gates were overgrown with black pollution vines, and a walkway covered in black mud led into the unknown depths.
At a glance, there was only boundless darkness.
But the Sentinels, with their extremely strong perception, were absolutely certain: there were countless pollution entities down there.
“The pollution source is underground.”
Cang Lin’s tone was filled with certainty.
Li Su took two steps forward. The curved blade in his hand sliced across the side of the rusty gate, forcefully cutting off a piece of black pollution vine.
Several crooked, carved characters were revealed to everyone’s eyes—
Secret Safe Base.
Seeing these three words, many of the Sentinels present understood what this was.
No planet is completely swallowed by pollution fog in a day or two.
Planet A-73 was no exception.
Sixty years ago, pollution entities had nearly devoured the entire galaxy, and the human population was plummeting daily. Since then, humans began to awaken as Sentinels and Guides. High-ability Sentinels and Guides with super-strong channeling power united to carry out large-scale exterminations of pollution entities and pollution sources.
With the birth of stronger Sentinels and the establishment of bases formed by powerful Sentinels, the ratio of pollution entities to humans gradually shifted from a terrifying 8:2 to a 5:5 standoff.
High-level pollution entities thus united. Possessing intelligence and memory comparable to humans, they occupied parts of the planets and launched organized devouring plans against human planets.
The devouring plan targeting Planet A-73 was on a massive scale.
In just two days, the entire Planet A-73 was covered in pollution fog.
In just four days, all aviation routes to Planet A-73 were forced to shut down.
Starting on the fifth day, the Federation urgently dispatched a large number of Sentinels to rescue Planet A-73.
Without exception, none of the Sentinels who came to the rescue successfully left.
The temporary alliance formed by the male lead group was the boldest decision made by the Federation to salvage the important resources on Planet A-73.
As the Supreme Commanders of the top seven bases in the galaxy, representing the highest combat power of humanity, they were the final hope.
And this underground secret safe base before them was obviously a hiding spot for the planet’s native Sentinels during the process of the planet being swallowed by pollution.
But once discovered by high-level pollution entities, a hiding spot would turn into a tomb.
“That explains why most of the pollution entities in this area are Sentinels.”
Hei Mi’s voice carried a heaviness.
“Searchlights. We kill our way in.”
Cang Lin rushed down first.
Searchlights beamed into the tunnel, illuminating the scene inside with perfect clarity.
The tunnel walls were densely packed with crawling black pollution vines, a sight that made one’s scalp tingle.
Chi Wan followed the main force, walking down quickly.
The deeper they went, the more humid and foul the environment became. A stench of fishy rot mixed with rust filled their noses. On the not-so-spacious tunnel walls, pollution bugs scurried among the vines.
Chi Wan swallowed hard, forcing herself not to look at the nauseating sights.
The team came to a halt.
Cang Lin, at the head of the team, reached out to stop everyone.
Chi Wan poked her small head out through the gaps between the tall Sentinels’ bodies to look forward.
The scene below made her blood run cold.
In the underground space at the end of the tunnel, a densely packed crowd of pollution Sentinels stood squeezed together, tilting their gray, dead faces up to stare at them.
They didn’t attack, nor did they move; they just stared with their pitch-black eyes fixed deathly upon the intruders.
Some of the pollution entities had fresh wounds from fighting the Sentinels earlier, with black blood oozing and sizzling from their injuries.
Chi Wan swallowed again, not daring to make a sound.
All the Sentinels were very quiet.
The next second, all the pollution entities in the space below opened their mouths.
Without exception, they were all chanting two words—”Go home.”
Countless instances of “Go home,” spoken without any tonal fluctuation, echoed within the underground space. Combined with their eerie stares, it was incredibly horrifying.
Cang Lin didn’t speak; he simply raised his dual guns.
Bang bang bang—!
All the Sentinels opened fire!
The intense hail of bullets seemed to pierce through the gloomy atmosphere in an instant.
Bang bang bang—!
Bang bang bang—!
The entire underground space was filled with the smell of gunpowder from the friction of bullets.
And those pollution entities that had been motionless began to crawl upward frantically!
Braving the rain of bullets, even with blood holes shot through their heads or arms blown off by gunfire, they continued to drag their broken bodies, crawling madly upward.
Their mouths continued to chant, “Go home.”
Chi Wan kept her head down and focused intently on her work. She was very safe behind the Sentinels and could devote herself one hundred percent to operating her Mental Power.
The battle lasted for fully ten minutes.
By the time the entire underground space was filled with corpses and black blood, all that remained on the ground were a few heads that hadn’t completely died, still chanting “go home,” along with severed limbs and rotting internal organs.
Chi Wan didn’t dare look at them. She followed the main force and continued to explore forward.
“The high-level pollution entity controlling these things is right behind the door.”
Following Li Su’s statement, Cang Lin kicked the iron door open directly.
Boom—!
The final iron door crashed down, and the high-level pollution entity inside revealed its true face.
It was still a Sentinel. Strangely, his entire body was bound in iron chains, appearing unable to move.
However, the look he gave everyone was extremely eerie. He suddenly opened his mouth, and in an instant, a massive amount of purple fog was released. Everyone’s expressions changed.
Cang Lin immediately lowered his voice:
“It’s Ability: Mental Hallucination. Retreat immediately!”
Against a pollution entity’s Mental Hallucination ability, even a super SSS-rank Sentinel like him couldn’t break free on his own once infected.
Everyone retreated rapidly.
The hallucinogenic fog spread extremely fast.
Almost instantly, it enveloped a large portion of the Sentinel squad.
Chi Wan, who had been flung a distance away by the snake tail, didn’t have time to thank Qi Ye before scrambling to escape through the crowd.
She watched helplessly as Li Su ran past her.
He was tall and long-legged, his speed nearly double hers. In passing, he scooped up a Guide and a Sentinel, and the Black Lion manifested by his Mental Entity picked up another Guide in its mouth.
He saved everyone but her.
Chi Wan turned her grief and indignation into motivation. If he wouldn’t save her, she would save herself.
Summoning the explosive power of a hundred-meter sprint, she managed to rush out just moments before they erected a temporary defensive wall.
Gasping for breath with her hands on her knees, Chi Wan realized with a start that only a small number of people had made it out.
Even Cang Lin and Qi Ye hadn’t escaped.
Looking down through the glass defensive wall, she discovered that the majority of the Sentinels were trapped in the hallucinogenic fog.
On the other side, the Sentinels and Guides who had successfully escaped were circling Li Su anxiously.
“Commander Li, what do we do now?”
“Hallucinogenic fog is a dead end for Sentinels. No Sentinel can wake up from the fog by their own consciousness.”
“No one expected this pollution entity’s ability to be hallucinogenic fog. We Sentinels aren’t afraid of fighting or bleeding, but we are most afraid of this stuff!”
Hallucinogenic fog was a death trap for Sentinels, whose Mental Power was prone to volatility.
Li Su knew this very well.
Because it invaded the Sentinel’s Mental Power, trapping the victim’s Mental Entity forever in the most terrifying and painful segment of their memory. It would torture their mind repeatedly until their Mental Power was exhausted, leading to death.
“Now we can only rely on the Guides. Save as many as you can. I will contact the Alliance to dispatch more Guides here.”
After speaking, Li Su opened his optical computer with a heavy expression to call X-K Alliance Headquarters.
The two SS-rank Guides who had escaped began trying to release their Mental Power to sense the Sentinels in the fog.
Chi Wan glanced at the thick hallucinogenic fog, closed her eyes, and released her Mental Power with full force.
In an instant, her powerful Mental Power, dense and fine, spread into the fog like unspooling silk.
Within the Mental Power network, she clearly sensed every Sentinel trapped in the fog.
Without exception, they all looked pained; some were even weeping bitterly.
At the source of the fog, the chain-bound high-level pollution entity wore a triumphant smile on its face. The smile was somewhat hideous, as if watching their suffering gave it immense pleasure.
Finally, Chi Wan used her Mental Power to locate Qi Ye in the furthest corner.
Compared to the agony of the others, he simply stood there with his eyes closed quietly, as if he were merely trapped.
Chi Wan was delighted. His dream must not be that painful; he should be easy to rescue.
Without a second thought, she used her full strength to invade his Mental Landscape.
Like traveling through time and space, Chi Wan saw a vast expanse of black.
Then the image gradually cleared. She saw several teenagers cheering and screaming at a beast-fighting arena. In the arena enclosed by iron bars, several pollution entities were besieging a small boy.
Although there seemed to be an invisible barrier between the scene before her and Chi Wan, she could still distinguish him from the boy’s features.
That was Qi Ye in his childhood.
