Sentinel & Guide: From Pariah to Heartthrob Chapter 64

Chapter 64: Making Her Happy

After a brief respite, the group was once again swarmed by a massive influx of Polluted Entities.

The fierce battle raged on until late into the night. Fortunately, they finally detected traces of a new space-time rift. Although Shi Ye remained at the forefront for most of the fight, his Spirit Body would occasionally sprint back to Chi Wan’s side, tenderly carrying her over to his position.

Following this, a powerful burst of ability would usually end the battle instantly.

Furthermore, he intentionally left every Polluted Entity with a final breath, making it easier for her to devour their Essences.

By the end, Chi Wan felt as though she couldn’t absorb any more. Having consumed the Essences of several high-level Polluted Entities and numerous ordinary ones within a single day, she was reaching her limit.

Around the marked space-time rift, the Sentinels began constructing a temporary barrier and preparing dinner.

“Little Wanwan, Commander Shi’s combat uniform is torn again. Here’s a new one; why don’t you take it to him?”

A busy Kui An handed over a stack of black combat gear. Chi Wan paused what she was doing and obediently accepted it.

At that moment, Shi Ye was on the opposite side, obscured by various instruments, his expression unreadable.

Beside him, several Sentinels were engaged in conversation.

Chi Wan walked over with the uniform, her small frame nearly swallowed by the bustling crowd.

Before she could get close, however, she overheard their conversation:

“Is that so? I didn’t notice. No way, the Commander previously told us not to mention her in front of him.”

“Yeah, I remember the Commander saying that Guide Chi Wan was his most hated…”

As the Sentinel spoke, he caught sight of Chi Wan and immediately cut himself off.

“Guide… Guide Chi Wan.”

The other Sentinels also grew visibly tense.

Behind them, Shi Ye turned his head and looked over.

Under the artificial night lights, Chi Wan kept her eyes lowered and pressed her lips thin, handing the combat uniform to one of the Sentinels.

“This is for your Commander.”

Her voice was a few degrees colder, stripped of its previous softness. After speaking, she turned and left immediately.

Shi Ye’s brow furrowed slightly as his gaze swept over the Sentinels.

“What were you just talking about?”

He had been preoccupied with urgent matters on his light-brain and hadn’t paid attention to their chatter.

The Sentinels looked awkward. One of them stepped forward as the leader:

“We were just saying… that you really hate Guide Chi Wan… and as luck would have it, she heard us.”

In the darkness of the night, that solitary, slender figure was soon obscured by the crowd and disappeared from sight.

Shi Ye’s gaze turned cold.

“If anyone dares to gossip about her again, I will deal with it as a disciplinary violation.”

He no longer had the heart to process anything else and walked straight toward Chi Wan’s location.

When he reached the outside of the temporary tent, Kui An’s voice drifted from within:

“What’s wrong? Are you unhappy?”

Chi Wan’s low, muffled voice was heart-wrenching:

“No, Sister Kui An. I’m just a little tired.”

Shi Ye’s footsteps stopped outside.

“Guide Chi Wan, is it convenient to talk?”

Kui An was the first to step out. Her gaze swept over Chi Wan’s silent, downcast face before landing on Shi Ye, who looked uncharacteristically nervous. She very tactfully moved aside to give the two of them some space.

As his tall frame entered the tent, the space felt instantly compressed.

Shi Ye, who was never good with words, remained silent for a few seconds before finally speaking:

“In my past understanding, people do not suddenly undergo such massive changes.”

“But I no longer wish to overthink the logic of this matter.”

As he spoke, his sharp eyes softened significantly—a rare sight.

“I only know that I don’t hate you at all right now.”

In fact… he really wanted to cooperate with her.

While speaking, he carefully observed Chi Wan’s facial expressions.

However, he found that she didn’t look happy at all.

She merely shook her small head while keeping it lowered.

“It doesn’t really matter. It’s fine if everyone hates me.”

She was used to it.

It was just that hearing it still made her a little upset.

This sense of drifting without belonging made her feelings of disappointment hard to control.

Suddenly, Chi Wan’s nose turned a bit red.

Even though she was desperately forcing herself to think of happy things.

Things will get better. I’ll get stronger. I’ll successfully leave this place.

When that time comes, I’ll save enough money and take Dudu to a safe place to live happily.

But the tears were stubborn, surging out all at once.

Pitter-patter. They dripped onto the ground by her feet.

Chi Wan lowered her head even further, feeling that crying at a time like this was truly pathetic.

Clearly, she didn’t actually care that much.

As those tears hit the ground, they also struck a chord of bitterness in Shi Ye’s heart.

The girl’s attempt to stay strong in front of him was truly painful to watch.

For a moment, he was at a loss, blaming himself for making her sad.

In his panic, his Spirit Body manifested, its smallest form rubbing against Chi Wan’s feet.

Shi Ye grew anxious. His voice was as low as it could be, rasping with excessive tension:

“Don’t be sad. How about this… whatever you like, I’ll give it to you once we return.”

The miniature Black Wolf King also tried its best to make her happy, wagging its wolf tail and pretending to be a puppy. It bared its teeth at Chi Wan, attempting to display a healing, big-dog-like smile.

Chi Wan, who was already sad, saw the tooth-baring Black Wolf King and was so startled that she let out a “waah” and started sobbing loudly.

Shi Ye’s face turned pale with worry, and he quickly recalled the Spirit Body.

He recalled how the Sentinels at the “Doggy Paradise” amused female guests, and a look of hesitation appeared on his cold face.

But the girl’s crying was truly heart-tugging.

He no longer hesitated.

The wolf ears atop his head were controlled into popping out, and a wolf tail manifested from behind, pushing down his leather belt by two centimeters.

Halfway through her crying, Chi Wan’s hand was taken. Immediately after, she watched as this usually cold and taciturn Sentinel Commander—sporting a pair of fluffy wolf ears—tenderly rested his sharp chin in her palm.

Chi Wan was stunned by the scene, frozen in place. She didn’t just stop crying; she forgot to breathe.

His face was even slightly flushed due to the unfamiliarity and embarrassment. His sharp eyes looked at her intently:

“Do you feel a bit happier now?”

Chi Wan’s eyes reflected his wolf tail, which was wagging incessantly behind him.

For a moment, she couldn’t speak at all, she just blinked.

Shi Ye, however, thought it wasn’t enough. He lowered his head slightly, rubbing his fluffy ears against her palm. His low, husky voice was just like those ears—

It made her heart itch.
