Chapter 68: Kui An’s Pain
“Take the main force and run! There are more caves in the back, go there!”
Chi Wan, who had been knocked into the slime pool by the giant slime hand, looked toward Kui An in the distance.
Kui An’s eyes were red with anxiety. She quickly led the thirty-plus Sentinels toward the back mountain.
This space was like a closed cliff bottom. There were many caves, but the terrain was rugged and the rocks were jagged. There weren’t many caves that met the criteria for Sentinels to hide in.
Seeing that Kui An had run off, Chi Wan quickly took the two Sentinels and ran in the other direction.
“The space hasn’t collapsed. There must be more space-time rifts. Let’s split up and find them!”
Their panicked and desperate hearts stabilized slightly because of Chi Wan’s words. The two Sentinels quickly responded:
“Understood!”
On Kui An’s side, they ran quickly toward the caves on the cliff walls.
That large group of entities was chasing closely. Fortunately, they were slime-like monsters. If they had been avian types, the group would have died ten thousand times over.
“You guys go in first, hurry!”
Kui An protected those Sentinels as they entered the cave.
Seeing that they were trying to hide in the cave again, a large number of entities swarmed forward, only to be blocked by half of a giant piranha plant.
“Hurry!”
After the last Sentinel entered the cave, Kui An followed quickly!
Just then, the high-level entity also caught up and slammed into the cave, causing rocks to tumble!
The Sentinels turned to look at Kui An:
“Guide Kui An, hurry down!”
Under the searchlights, the narrow cave was like a fragile temporary shelter. Under the repeated, increasingly violent strikes of the high-level entity, it was on the verge of collapse.
Kui An was suddenly hit by a sense of bewilderment. It was as if she were seeing a vast expanse of red.
“Why? Why me?!”
The heart-wrenching roar that belonged to her own memory echoed in her mind.
BAM—!
Another violent strike.
Kui An was knocked several meters down.
She turned to look at the entrance. The pitch-black slime head of the high-level entity was almost halfway squeezed inside, its eyeballs bulging as it looked at her grotesquely.
She raised her gun and fired frantically!
Bang bang bang bang bang—!
The eyeballs quickly retracted into the slime. The bullets sank into the slime as if swallowed; they couldn’t cause any real damage.
She felt a momentary sense of despair.
“Guide Kui An, hurry down!”
The Sentinels were calling her.
She turned to look at them:
“This cave won’t last much longer. If it keeps being hit, it’s going to collapse!”
Her voice was desperate, stating a truth everyone already understood.
“It’s okay, Guide Kui An! If we die, we die together!”
“Yeah! Those of us who are Sentinels, when have we ever been afraid of death?!”
“You’re a Guide! Hurry down here! We’ll use our bodies to protect you! Even if it collapses, we can keep you alive!”
Tears streamed down Kui An’s face.
Looking at these Sentinels who were facing death yet only considering her safety, she suddenly smiled.
Her voice regained its usual calm and seductive tone. This smile was stunningly beautiful:
“You silly boys. Even though I’m a Guide, it doesn’t mean I can’t protect you!
Stay alive for me!”
As she spoke, her Spirit Body expanded to its maximum size!
The scarlet piranha plant opened its giant mouth. The mouth, filled with sharp floral teeth, bit down hard on the entity’s eyeball!
The entity obviously hadn’t expected a Guide to attack it. It let out a pained sound and retracted!
Kui An seized the opportunity and ran out of the cave. As she ran, her vibrant red hair fluttered. She turned back one last time to look at the cave. From the entrance, the gazes of all the Sentinels were filled with shock and disbelief.
In their sight, the Guide standing under the light appeared grand and holy. The piranha plant gave a heavy throw, blocking the cave entrance with giant boulders.
This throw also shattered nearly a third of the plant’s head.
Naturally, Kui An was in excruciating pain.
She sprinted through the slime piles, using her own strength to lead the slime entities away.
The high-level entity was now beyond furious.
A mere Guide had dared to toy with it like this.
Its massive slime body expanded several times over and slammed down hard toward Kui An’s running figure!
Having barely managed to dodge, Kui An was sent flying by the shockwave, crashing into a crevice in the ground.
Her internal organs felt almost shattered. She coughed up a large mouthful of blood.
Blood from her forehead flowed into her eyes, leaving her world in a shade of red.
A vast expanse of red.
Her consciousness began to blur from the intense pain. Kui An felt as though she had returned to that battle three years ago.
When she was rescued from the polluted waste, she hadn’t even had time to be happy before she saw a vast field of corpses.
The corpses of Sentinels were piled layer upon layer, forming a river of blood. Many familiar faces were among them.
“You were too far away, Guide Kui An. We didn’t have time to save those Sentinels; we could only make a choice.”
“This wasn’t your fault.”
She remembered that she had been on the verge of collapse back then. Her throat felt as if it were being choked, making it hard to breathe.
She looked at the man who remained silent and just questioned him heart-wrenchingly:
“Why didn’t you save them? Kui Chuan, tell me! There were over two hundred lives!
Over two hundred lives!!
Yet you came to save me!”
He had looked at her then, his gaze as calm as death:
“Because you are a Guide. You are more important.”
“I am more important?
Guides and Sentinels are all people! They are all human lives! Why should I be more important?!
What right do I have to be more important?!”
She had screamed until her voice was hoarse. Later, she was crying and laughing at the same time:
“I know why. It’s because my last name is Kui, isn’t it?”
“Tell me, is it?!”
Kui Chuan had remained silent, just looking at her quietly:
“Sister, I am human. I also have selfish motives.”
The high-level entity was getting closer and closer.
Kui An, her body in too much pain to move, let out a tear.
She especially remembered that she had finally just asked in despair:
“Why? Why me?!”
“Over two hundred lives… Have you ever considered that I simply cannot bear that weight?”
For these past three years, she had lived a truly exhausting life.
Even after changing her name and staying far away from the Federation to fight and live on her own, there wasn’t a single night she didn’t have nightmares.
The blood in those dreams constantly reminded her.
Because she was saved, over two hundred Sentinels had none survive.
So this time, if she could save these Sentinels, it could be considered as paying back some of the debt.
Thinking this, Kui An’s lips curled into a smile.
