Shocking The Madman Stole Someone Else’s Canary to be His Wife Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Goodbye, Baby

The hospital corridor was permeated with the faint smell of disinfectant.

Wen Yan stood holding the payment slip, snapping back to reality. Seeing the other person’s left hand wrapped in layers of gauze, guilt washed over him again.

“Is your hand better now? Does it still hurt?”

Pei Zhouye’s expression was indifferent as he stared down at Wen Yan. “Not better. Hurts like hell.”

“Should we go find the doctor to look at it again?” Wen Yan sounded anxious. “Is there some other problem?”

Looking at Wen Yan worrying about him, a smile found its way back onto Pei Zhouye’s lips. “If you stay in the hospital with me for observation for a few days, maybe it will get better.”

At these words, Wen Yan looked up sharply.

The other man’s eyes were dark. Caught staring, he made no attempt to hide it; instead, his gaze became even more blatant.

Blatantly flirting with him.

Wen Yan’s expression shifted from shock to annoyance. The tips of his ears turned red, but he didn’t know what to say.

After all, this man was his savior.

A phone ringtone broke the stalemated and bizarre atmosphere.

Wen Yan put the phone to his ear. “Okay, I’m coming right now.”

He stole a glance at Pei Zhouye out of the corner of his eye.

The man’s expression had turned cold, yet he continued to stare fixedly at him.

Wen Yan hesitated for a moment, then forced raw words from his mouth: “Goodbye, baby.”

He put the phone back. Wen Yan frowned, speaking with lingering anger, “My boyfriend is here to pick me up. I’m leaving first. Contact me if you feel unwell. Still, thank you for saving me today.”

The slender young man turned and walked away, taking quick strides, disappearing around the corner in moments.

Pei Zhouye’s expression was frighteningly cold. His eyes narrowed slightly as he gazed in the direction Wen Yan had vanished, grinding a few words between his teeth in a low voice:

“Goodbye, baby.”

A moment later, someone came up to him. “Young Master, are you alright? Today was too dangerous…”

Pei Zhouye didn’t speak. He manipulated his phone one-handed with his right hand, deleting and editing. Finally, he changed the typed [Goodbye, baby] to [Goodbye], his finger hovering over the send button.

Suddenly, a message popped up on the other side. It was a long string of digits—a phone number.

Pei Zhouye was pleasantly surprised.

Another message followed: [This is my boyfriend’s number. If there’s anything else later, go contact my boyfriend.]

Pei Zhouye stared at that string of numbers, feeling both angry and amused.

He could recite this number backward.

It was Wen Yan’s own number.

Over the past three years, there had been countless nights and days when Pei Zhouye wanted to dial this number, but he had only called it once.

The voice on the other end had been warm and clear, asking who he was. Wen Yan had been full of patience, waiting twenty seconds for a reply before finally hanging up.

His memories were interrupted by his assistant’s chattering. Pei Zhouye finally pressed send on that [Goodbye].

—A red exclamation mark appeared on the screen.

Pei Zhouye gripped the phone tight and let out a cold laugh.

Wen Yan had actually blocked him!

Outside the hospital.

Wen Yan operated his phone and called a taxi. While waiting, he glanced back repeatedly, afraid that the baffling man would chase after him.

Gu Yulan hadn’t called him at all. Luckily, he was smart and the alarm he had set in advance had done the trick.

So, he had just answered an alarm clock and left.

The car arrived; it was a BMW.

After getting in, Wen Yan felt a pang of distress over the cost.

Afraid the man wouldn’t believe him and would chase him, he had specifically ordered a premium car for the act. Just for this short distance, the fare was several dozen yuan.

Gu Yulan finally sent a message, late as usual.

[Yan-yan, which hospital are you at? I’m coming to pick you up now.]

Wen Yan bit his lip until it turned white: [I’ve already gone back. Let’s meet at the school’s back gate.]

[Okay.]

A kitten sticker followed. Wen Yan didn’t find the kitten sticker cute at all right now.

The car stopped at the back gate of A University. Wen Yan got out and looked at the intersection nearby.

The two twisted, deformed cars that had been there were gone, as if nothing had ever happened.

“Yan-yan!” Gu Yulan got out of his car to find Wen Yan. He tried to take Wen Yan’s hand, but Wen Yan dodged.

He paused, then seeing Wen Yan’s expressionless, beautiful face, he approached again.

“Yan-yan, do you blame me for not coming to find you just now?” Gu Yulan’s voice was gentle, the expression on his handsome face sincere. “My brother suddenly fainted at the company and was sent to the hospital. When I heard you were okay, I didn’t make it in time.”

Wen Yan’s expression softened as expected. “Then is your brother okay now?”

Gu Yulan shook his head, finding Wen Yan’s naivety laughable inside, and answered casually, “He’s fine now.”

As they spoke, they got into the back seat of the car.

The driver was driving now. Gu Yulan gave the name of a shopping mall.

Wen Yan asked, “Are we buying something there?”

“Aren’t we going to my friend’s welcome party tonight? Buying you a set of clothes.”

Wen Yan stopped him. “I can’t let you spend money again. I can go home and change…”

His life used to be affluent; he had a few presentable outfits.

The car started, the driver heading toward the mall.

Helpless, Wen Yan leaned back against the seat, silent and angry.

Gu Yulan found this look cute. He leaned closer, cupping the cheeks of the pouting Wen Yan with both hands. “Yan-yan, I don’t mean anything else by it. It was my fault I couldn’t get there for the accident today. A set of clothes is just my apology gift, a punishment and consolation for myself.

I don’t want to be unable to accompany you next time you are in danger.

My Yan-yan is so good-looking, you should dress beautifully, shouldn’t you?”

Wen Yan got goosebumps from the cheesy words. He looked into Gu Yulan’s eyes, hesitating to speak.

The other’s eyes seemed to hold only him.

He couldn’t blame Gu Yulan for his car accident. He couldn’t be so harsh on him just because he was his boyfriend.

Gu Yulan leaned in, wanting to kiss him. Wen Yan dodged with a big reaction.

Surprised by his own reflex, Wen Yan looked away apologetically and whispered, “Too fast…”

Gu Yulan nodded in understanding. “Sorry, I didn’t ask for your opinion.”

Wen Yan’s personality wouldn’t allow him to do this, and besides, this was Wen Yan’s first kiss.

He had been too aggressive.

When Wen Yan got out of the car, the villa outside was parked full of luxury cars.

Gu Yulan held his hand as they stepped through the main door.

The voices in the hall stagnated slightly.

Wen Yan was wearing an ivory-white satin shirt, the hem tucked into black trousers, accentuating his narrow waist and long, slender legs. His face was beautiful but not feminine, radiating a cold vibe that warned strangers to keep away.

Someone walked over with a teasing smile on their face. “More than just ‘not a loss,’ this is a huge profit.”

Someone deliberately dragged out their tone.

“Truly lucky with romance~”

Wen Yan frowned slightly, trying to keep his expression natural.

Perhaps this was just how Gu Yulan’s friends joked, he consoled himself.

The atmosphere was still too strange; many pairs of eyes were staring at him.

Wen Yan felt uncomfortable. He looked up casually—and froze.

The crystal chandelier cast a hazy halo of light.

On the second-floor corridor, that man was leaning his arm against the railing. His suit jacket was draped casually over his shoulders, shirt sleeves rolled up to the forearms, revealing the rugged lines of his wrist bones—and the left hand wrapped in gauze.

Across the noisy crowd, that man’s gaze was arrogant and cold, looking only in his direction.
