Chapter 5: Trustworthy
That face left an indelible impression; Wen Yan could not have mistaken it.
The frivolous whispers around them gradually faded away.
A subtle sensation came from his palm. Wen Yan felt Gu Yulan’s hand wrapping around his fingers, gently squeezing his palm.
Body heat seeped in little by little through where their skin touched.
Realizing Gu Yulan was comforting him, he lifted his face toward Gu Yulan and pressed his lips into a faint smile.
On the second-floor corridor, Pei Zhouye’s expression darkened even further.
Shen Yao stepped out of a room on the second floor and immediately noticed that the usually boisterous first-floor hall was abnormally quiet, filled only with hushed murmurs.
He followed the gaze of the people below, which led right to Pei Zhouye.
“Brother, why are you posing up here right from the start?” Shen Yao walked over cheerfully. “They aren’t familiar with you, so they’re all a bit scared of you right now.”
Although even if they were familiar, they’d probably still be scared of Pei Zhouye, Shen Yao thought to himself. He had been hanging out with Pei-ge for ten years, and he was still afraid—more afraid of him than of his own biological brother.
“Brother, let’s go down and have some fun,” Shen Yao added. Catching a glimpse of Pei Zhouye’s gloomy expression, his voice trailed off weaky. “Or if you don’t want to go, that’s fine too…”
“Go,” Pei Zhouye interrupted coldly. Shen Yao immediately shut up.
Pei Zhouye stared dead at Wen Yan.
How could he not go?
If he didn’t keep an eye on him, Wen Yan might run off and get a marriage certificate with someone else in a moment, and he wouldn’t even receive an invitation.
The hall slowly returned to its noisy state.
Gu Yulan looked at everything around him.
The place he had visited during the day had now almost completely changed its appearance.
Fresh flowers, champagne, and refreshments were arranged with extravagant luxury. Waiters stood at attention everywhere. Many people from the circle had arrived, but because it was Pei Zhouye’s welcome-back party, no one dared to bring any random models or celebrities.
Along the way, many people came over to strike up a conversation with him, their eyes drifting toward the person beside him.
Wen Yan stood obediently by his side, holding his hand, a small smile on his lips. When a topic fell on him, he would respond with a few sentences before lightly pushing the conversation back.
Beautiful, obedient, and sensible. Speaking just a few words scratched at one’s heart like a kitten; he was incredibly alluring.
Until Pei Zhouye appeared.
He had changed out of his clothes from the day. His well-tailored suit accentuated his broad shoulders and long legs, and his cold face exuded an intense sense of oppression.
People around them stepped forward to greet Pei Zhouye.
Gu Yulan felt the body of the person he was holding stiffen. Still, without hesitation, he forcefully tried to lead Wen Yan forward, but he couldn’t move him.
Wen Yan stood stubbornly in place.
Gu Yulan softened his voice and whispered to Wen Yan, “Today’s welcome banquet is for him, for Pei Zhouye. Since we’re here, we definitely have to go say hello, right?”
This tone was meant to coax him. Wen Yan wasn’t someone who didn’t know how to behave; he couldn’t stop Gu Yulan from greeting the host of the banquet.
He had just blocked Pei Zhouye during the day… Why would someone who just returned to the country and had a banquet to attend waste time saying such things to him?
Wen Yan was so embarrassed his body was tense, but he had already been led in front of Pei Zhouye.
Gu Yulan smiled and spoke, “Pei Shao, I am Gu Yulan, from the Gu family of Tomorrow Group. We had lunch together.”
Pei Zhouye didn’t respond. His gaze landed on their joined hands.
Gu Yulan realized what he was looking at and gently shook Wen Yan’s hand. “This is Wen Yan. Yan-yan, say hello to Pei Shao.”
Wen Yan looked up, meeting a pair of indifferent black eyes. He gritted his teeth and spoke, “Hello, Pei Shao.”
Pei Zhouye acted as if he didn’t know him. He moved his cold gaze away and stopped on Gu Yulan. “Is he your boyfriend?”
Gu Yulan was stunned for a moment. Addressing him like this in the circle wasn’t exactly wrong.
“Yes.”
“Leave your contact info.” Pei Zhouye didn’t wait for Gu Yulan to unlock his phone. He took a step to leave, then stopped again. “I want the phone number.”
The people around them looked at each other in dismay.
Wen Yan lowered his head, nearly biting through his lip. Pei Zhouye had definitely discovered that he had blocked him, and possibly knew that the number he gave wasn’t Gu Yulan’s.
Someone patted Gu Yulan on the shoulder. “Pei Shao really doesn’t seem to like the person beside you very much.”
It was more than just dislike; it could probably be called loathing. No matter how famous or noble Wen Yan was, to Pei Zhouye, he was probably just a two-million-yuan canary rashly brought to his welcome banquet.
Gu Yulan smiled and shook his head, saying nothing. He planned to contact Pei Zhouye’s assistant after the event ended to send the phone number over.
The banquet continued.
Wen Yan sensed a subtle shift in the attitude of those around him. Gu Yulan seemed oblivious to this strange atmosphere, smiling as he led Wen Yan to chat with different people.
Someone handed Wen Yan a drink. Wen Yan glanced at Gu Yulan, who was preparing to accept it for him.
It was another drink he couldn’t refuse.
Wen Yan didn’t let Gu Yulan drink it. He took the glass himself and downed it in one go.
A little bit of the liquor spilled, trailing down his fair, slender neck and wetting the collar of his silk shirt.
He had drunk quite a few glasses; his face was flushed, and his steps were a bit unsteady.
Gu Yulan had helped him drink a lot at the start, but he couldn’t always let Gu Yulan drink. These were all Gu Yulan’s friends, and there were other activities later tonight. If Gu Yulan drank too much shielding him, he wouldn’t be able to continue.
Wen Yan drank a few more glasses. Dizzy and sleepy, he almost collapsed onto Gu Yulan.
He stopped walking, let go of his hand, wrapped his arms around Gu Yulan’s neck, and whispered in his ear.
“Senior, I’m too sleepy… I want to sleep. I want to sleep on the sofa for a while. Can you come find me later?”
A faint fragrance mixed with the slight scent of alcohol wafted over. As soon as Wen Yan finished his mumbled words, he fell asleep. Gu Yulan felt his whole body heat up listening to him, but he still half-carried him to the nearby sofa.
“Yo, what did he say to make you stand at attention?” Someone laughed, their gaze sweeping over the bulge in Gu Yulan’s trousers before moving to Wen Yan, their tone sour. “A beauty invites you, and you don’t hurry to carry him upstairs? Fighting a fierce battle right here isn’t appropriate, is it?”
Gu Yulan ignored him. He waved a waiter over and said something.
A moment later, the waiter returned with a blanket.
Gu Yulan draped the blanket over Wen Yan. The wide, thick blanket covered most of his body, revealing only a bit of his neck and face.
“Fuck, you can tolerate this? You can’t get it up, can you?” The person who spoke earlier swore, eyes wide.
Someone watched Gu Yulan’s action of covering him with the blanket. “Treating a canary like such a treasure, Gu Er, you really are something.”
“Is it two million a month or a night?” Someone’s gaze swept obscenely over the sleeping figure. “With both two million and Wen Yan involved, who wouldn’t cherish that a bit?”
Seeing that Gu Yulan really just meant to let Wen Yan sleep there for a while, they secretly cursed him for wasting a heavenly gift.
“Yulan, want to go play billiards?”
Seeing the person’s face, Gu Yulan showed neither surprise nor joy, simply smiling and agreeing.
The other party was someone who had looked down on his status before; this was effectively an active gesture of acceptance.
Before going to the private underground billiards room, Gu Yulan couldn’t reach his driver. He called someone over, gave them the address, and sent them to take Wen Yan home.
These were all Shen Yao’s subordinates, and it was Pei Zhouye’s home turf—they were trustworthy.
In the corner, Pei Zhouye raised his hand, and a waiter standing nearby handed him a glass of wine.
Shen Yao sat beside him, following Pei Zhouye’s gaze toward the sofa.
This was undoubtedly the best angle for viewing.
The beauty on the sofa had flushed cheeks, and his lips were a moist crimson. Those usually indifferent, distant, and beautiful eyes were closed tightly as he slept peacefully.
“With Wen Yan’s face, sending him to my second brother’s entertainment company would be a guaranteed profit. Getting two million from shooting a random commercial would be easy then.” Shen Yao sighed with genuine emotion and regret.
Everyone knew Wen Yan was beautiful. Even he, a straight man, had been stunned by a fleeting glance before. But he really hadn’t expected that Wen Yan would sleep with someone for money.
Thinking of this, Shen Yao suddenly turned his head, just in time to see Pei Zhouye staring at Wen Yan without blinking. He worried for Wen Yan, “Brother, why do you hate Wen Yan so much? Did he provoke you?”
In the distance, Gu Yulan had already left with the others. The waiter he found lifted Wen Yan’s arm, supporting him as they walked out.
“I don’t hate him.”
Pei Zhouye replied to the first half of the question, then stood up and walked out.
“Brother, what are you doing?” Shen Yao stood up to follow.
Pei Zhouye didn’t look back. “Taking him home.”
