Chapter 54: Don’t Be Angry
The group turned around in unison.
“Hello, President Pei.”
“Hello, President Pei.”
Wen Yan, blending into the crowd, mumbled a greeting.
Pei Zhouye was standing with Lin Seran. Lin Seran wasn’t wearing a mask for disguise, and there were quiet gasps of surprise from the surroundings.
His fan base was substantial, and he was very famous; many people recognized him.
Wen Yan was somewhat distracted, his thoughts messy. No wonder Pei Zhouye never comes home; he was with Lin Seran.
He couldn’t tell which of Pei Zhouye’s words were true and which were false.
When Pei Zhouye had so clearly told him he was single, he had believed it.
Pei Zhouye’s aura was cold. His gaze swept across the room, softening only when it landed on Wen Yan, and he uttered a phrase, neither light nor heavy:
“Baby.”
Everyone held their breath.
President Pei looked cold enough to freeze water, yet in private, he called his boyfriend “Baby.”
Wen Yan snapped back to reality, his eyes meeting the man’s in mid-air, and he instinctively looked away.
Pei Zhouye frowned, but he didn’t want to force Wen Yan to make their relationship public at this moment.
“Brother Zhouye,” Lin Seran interjected naturally, pointing at the robot behind the glass. “Could you trouble them to introduce it to me? I don’t understand these things.”
Pei Zhouye nodded.
“I’ll do it!”
Among the group, Wu Qingqing was responsible for this section. Since she liked the roles Lin Seran played, she actively took on the task.
“‘Morning Star 3.0’ is the result of 16 months of research and development. It is more flexible and has more comprehensive functions than 2.0…”
Pei Zhouye quietly took a few steps toward Wen Yan. Seeing him, Wen Yan dodged slightly.
Wen Yan pushed Duan Mingtao between them to block him.
Pei Zhouye stared at the back of that head, his eyes gloomy.
“Can you explain this?” Lin Seran spoke up again, his finger poking against the glass, pointing at one of the components.
Wu Qingqing looked troubled. “I’m not too clear about these parts, I’m not in charge of…”
“I ask you and you don’t know anything, so what are you introducing?” Lin Seran interrupted her.
His delicate face wore a look of anger, yet he maintained an innocent and harmless appearance. The beauty mark under his eye made him look cold and indifferent.
Wu Qingqing stood frozen on the spot, at a loss, wanting to defend herself. “I can introduce its appearance and functions; I can answer other general questions.”
Lin Seran remained unforgiving. “But I just want to know about this.”
Wu Qingqing was completely silenced. Being embarrassed in public, tears were already swirling in her eyes.
“She really isn’t responsible for this part…” Wen Yan spoke up for Wu Qingqing, but before he could finish, Duan Mingtao had already pulled Wu Qingqing back to protect her behind him.
Duan Mingtao: “There are tens of thousands of parts inside. No one memorizes them all. It is normal for her to only introduce what she is responsible for.”
Lin Seran frowned and looked at Pei Zhouye, his expression resentful. “Brother Zhouye, am I abnormal then? Is it so hard to understand that I’m just a little curious? Didn’t she volunteer to introduce it just now? I thought she was prepared. Is it not okay to ask a few questions?”
He was aggressive. The others looked at each other, exchanging glances, thankful they hadn’t taken on the job of introducing.
The intern was eager to stand out but lacked experience and had no idea what kind of unexpected situations they might encounter.
Lin Seran looked like he was about to weep, as if he had suffered some tremendous grievance.
Pei Zhouye said in a deep voice, “Seran, don’t make things difficult for people. What they said is correct.”
Lin Seran’s temper was getting more and more willful.
He glanced at Wu Qingqing and Duan Mingtao. “You guys go back first.”
Lin Seran maintained his aggrieved expression, complaining with dissatisfaction, “Fine.”
Wen Yan accompanied the two as they left.
Wu Qingqing cried as she walked, while Wen Yan and Duan Mingtao offered dry comforts from the side.
Wen Yan: “It really isn’t your fault. It’s okay, everyone knows it wasn’t your fault.”
Duan Mingtao: “He was being unreasonable. It’s fine now.”
Wu Qingqing sobbed, wiping her tears with her hand. “I don’t like Lin Seran anymore. How can he be such a person?”
She had heard rumors online about Lin Seran being willful, but after marketing accounts spun it, Wu Qingqing had always thought his willfulness was cute and straightforward—until it landed on her head today.
By the time they returned to their workstations to pack up, gossip was spreading through the office at a speed that suggested someone was deliberately pushing it.
“President Pei has a little boyfriend who is a big star. He spoils him so much; he scolded several ignorant interns for him.”
“No, I heard the boyfriend was making a fuss out of ignorance, but President Pei didn’t blame him at all.”
Even while packing, she heard someone nearby sending a voice message.
“Our boss calls his partner ‘Baby,’ why don’t you call me that?”
The scolded interns, Wu Qingqing and Duan Mingtao, along with their friend Wen Yan, had very dark expressions.
Wu Qingqing blew her nose hard and threw the ball of tissue into the trash can. “I finally know what everyone gossips about all day. It’s fine, I’m not sad anymore. Let’s go have a big meal together today!”
Rumors really only spread wider when they are half-true and half-false.
She didn’t want to participate in this gossip chatter at all today, or even in the future.
Being a generic NPC in someone else’s story is miserable, Wu Qingqing thought.
Wen Yan had been distracted the whole time. He snapped back, “Okay.”
His phone kept vibrating. He didn’t answer the call, so the person on the other end switched to sending messages.
[Pei Zhouye: Why didn’t you answer my call?]
In the taxi, Wen Yan looked up to check the surroundings before lowering his head to reply.
[Wen Yan: I’m going to eat with friends.]
[Pei Zhouye: When will you take me to meet your friends?]
Wen Yan felt irritable and tapped his fingers quickly.
[Wen Yan: You met them today. They won’t want to see you in the future either.]
[Pei Zhouye: Are you angry?]
Wen Yan didn’t reply.
Pei Zhouye did nothing wrong. He didn’t punish anyone just because Lin Seran was unhappy; he was neutral and fair.
[Pei Zhouye: I’ve already sent compensation to your friends. Finance is off work, so it was expected to arrive tomorrow, but I’ve asked my assistant to expedite it now.]
[Pei Zhouye: Where are you eating? I’ll bring gifts to apologize.]
[Pei Zhouye: Don’t be unhappy.]
Now Pei Zhouye was even less in the wrong.
Wen Yan gripped his phone, not knowing what to say.
[Pei Zhouye: Lin Seran has liked being pampered since he was a child, and later he became a star. He was ignorant. I’ve already spoken to him in private, and he knows he was wrong.]
[Pei Zhouye: Baby, don’t be angry.]
Wen Yan could clearly imagine Pei Zhouye’s voice and tone.
He used to think Pei Zhouye was a very arrogant person. Now, that arrogant person was apologizing to him for something he hadn’t done wrong.
It was rare for sweet talk to go this far.
It was also rare to be able to cater to the emotions of two people at the same time.
It didn’t matter. He was going to the hospital to see Dr. Ping tomorrow anyway. Those thoughts that shouldn’t exist would be treated.
Wen Yan lowered his eyes and stared at the phone.
[Wen Yan: Got it. I’m here, not talking anymore.]
He put down the phone. The car was still driving.
Wu Qingqing teased him with smiling eyes, “Brother Yan, who are you chatting with? Hiding it so tight. Is it a girlfriend?”
