Chapter 61: Graduation Gift
The next day
Pei Zhouye returned to the room refreshed, ready to see if Wen Yan was awake.
The person on the bed had his eyes tightly closed, his beautiful, aloof face peaceful, eyelashes trembling slightly with his even breathing.
He sat by the bed, curling his fingers to touch those long eyelashes.
Precious things should be hidden in the bedroom.
“Don’t touch.” Wen Yan frowned and opened his eyes. “It tickles.”
Those peach blossom eyes curved, looking at Wen Yan with a sticky ambiguity.
Wen Yan sat up carefully, pressing his lips into a straight line, frowning and avoiding Pei Zhouye’s gaze.
“No!”
Wen Yan had already woken up when the faint sound of the door lock turning came.
Last night, he begged Pei Zhouye saying he really couldn’t, and Pei Zhouye said let him rest for a night and continue tomorrow.
That was why he kept pretending to sleep.
The culprit’s brows relaxed, smiling wantonly. “If it’s a no, then it’s a no. Since you’re awake, let’s go downstairs to eat.”
Dishes and chopsticks were put down.
Pei Zhouye estimated Wen Yan had eaten enough and suddenly spoke, “Gu Yulan has gone to prison.”
Wen Yan remained silent.
Pei Zhouye couldn’t gauge Wen Yan’s meaning but continued, “Cross-border financial fraud, ten years or more.”
“Thank you.”
Wen Yan spoke clearly.
He looked straight at Pei Zhouye and repeated, “Thank you.”
Pei Zhouye asked, “You aren’t angry?”
Wen Yan smiled, a bright smile. “Isn’t this what he deserves? Why should I be angry? If he remained at large, should I be happy for him?”
He wished Gu Yulan would stay in prison for a lifetime.
Gu Yulan had dragged him into this abyss, nearly causing his family ruin and death, forcing him onto this current divergent path. Yet he had taken the money and gone overseas, perhaps to use that money to stage a comeback, or perhaps to live a free and unfettered life forever.
How could he not hate him?
The money back then was given by Gu Yulan, but he hadn’t contacted the hospital. Still, that had solved his urgent need at the time.
Wen Yan’s tolerance for him was such that, if not for the subsequent trap set for his father, he might have even forgiven him.
Pei Zhouye looked at the bitterness in Wen Yan’s smile, a lump in his throat, and turned to hug Wen Yan.
“It’s okay now.”
“Wen Yan, everything is in the past.”
The love letters, flowers, hospital arrangements, and everything else Gu Yulan stole credit for—let them all pass with this.
It was just a small matter, a small matter he was willing to do for Wen Yan. The only two duties and purposes of those things were to entrust his fanatical love for Wen Yan and to attract Wen Yan’s attention.
Warm tears and broken sobs pressed against Pei Zhouye. He hugged Wen Yan tighter, his heart aching.
Wen Yan had held on alone for so long; it had been hard on him.
Even if yesterday’s wait and last night’s submission were for gratitude, he felt satisfied with that.
Two days passed quickly.
Wen Yan had been in low spirits for a few days. Pei Zhouye was busy arranging follow-up work after returning to the country so he could free up the weekend to go mountain climbing.
As soon as Pei Zhouye returned, Shen Yao put the mountain climbing plan on the schedule. After all, if the weather got any colder, it wouldn’t be suitable for night climbing and camping.
Shen Yao held the itinerary arranged by the assistant on his tablet and introduced it to Pei Zhouye.
“Sister-in-law has no classes on Friday afternoon, so we’ll go to B City on Friday afternoon. Play there for a day on Saturday, rest up in the evening, and then go night climbing and camping. That day happens to be sunny; you guys can watch the stars to your heart’s content. When dawn breaks, we’ll watch the sunrise, sleep on Sunday, and play at the mountain villa at the foot of the mountain in the afternoon.”
He flipped through the schedule as he spoke, sighing with emotion. “Why do you guys have to work and go to school? It would be great if everyone was as idle as me and Wang Shu. I can play for a month without repeating activities.”
Shen Yao’s days were truly leisurely. The only thing he had to consider every day was how to ask his two older brothers for more money to play.
Wang Shu was just like Shen Yao. The two idlers got together and vigorously researched how to lead a life of debauchery.
The assistant beside them tried hard to maintain a stiff smile on his face, gripping the documents tightly with his fingertips.
It must be nice not to work.
Pei Zhouye also gave Shen Yao a rare resentful look. “Just live this good life yourself. Who are you trying to piss off by saying it out loud? If you’re really so idle you don’t know what to do every day, I’ll arrange a job for you.”
Shen Yao shook his head repeatedly, his eyes pleading sincerely. “I know what I have to do every day: organize a gathering today, set off tomorrow. Brother, I won’t say it anymore. Don’t go to my brother; I really can’t work.”
There was a time when he truly lived a life of debauchery. having just turned adult and greedy for novelty, he lived in a drunken stupor every day, enjoying life and adding “life is boring.” He thought talking big in his WeChat Moments wouldn’t matter since his two brothers were incredibly busy and Pei Zhouye wasn’t in the country.
As a result, for some unknown reason, Pei Zhouye, who should have been far overseas, suddenly appeared in a domestic bar and dragged him away, scaring him completely sober.
He worked with Pei Zhouye for two months, accompanying him to meet big shots in various industries, listening to them speak in riddles, and enduring sarcastic remarks as a punching bag.
Since then, he had behaved himself.
Recalling that time, Shen Yao clicked his tongue, shaking his head and sighing. “Brother, why did you call me to choose projects with you back in July the year before last? Did you also think I had rare talent? Then do I count as a founding member of ‘Morning Star’?”
Pei Zhouye paused, giving him a meaningful look. “I didn’t think that. ‘Morning Star’ has your shares; you are a founding member.”
He didn’t lack money, but at that time, he felt that while Shen Yao’s lavish spending was one thing, he was afraid he would go astray and do things he shouldn’t, so he took all the money in Shen Yao’s hands to invest.
Shen Yao got interested and leaned in to ask, “Then why did you insist on having someone call me to go every day? To be a mascot?”
“Mn.” Pei Zhouye agreed casually, adding a random reason. “To find someone to get scolded with me.”
Two years ago at that time, Wen Yan had just finished his college entrance exams.
He found out Wen Yan had applied for a string of schools and majors related to robotics, and was finally admitted to A University.
Opportunities were rare. If he made Pei’s Technology good enough, sooner or later there would be a legitimate chance to meet Wen Yan.
The control of Pei’s Technology was a birthday gift from his father, and today’s world-renowned “Morning Star” was the graduation gift he had spent two months carefully selecting and preparing for Wen Yan.
B City
When the group arrived, it was Friday night.
The people who came this time were all close friends of Shen Yao. They had long heard Shen Yao say Pei Zhouye was bringing the person he cherished in his heart, so they were both excited and agitated, eager to take a look.
However, along the way, Pei Zhouye’s car was tightly closed, and the group didn’t even see a face.
[Wang Shu: What does Sister-in-law look like? Do we know him?]
Shen Yao deliberately maintained the mystery.
[Shen Yao: You know him.]
[Shen Yao: You’ll know tonight.]
