Chapter 9: Helping Him Out
The surroundings fell instantly silent.
“What the f…”
The person pinned to the table struggled hard to get up but failed. He looked sideways at the person holding him down, and his voice died.
“Spewing filth the moment you open your mouth—is this Young Master Chen’s quality?” Pei Zhouye’s tone was cold. His other hand was still casually tucked into his trouser pocket. The exposed wrist bone of his right hand pressed against the man’s temple, veins faintly visible under the cold white skin.
The pinned man was even more shocked; Pei Zhouye knew who he was.
“Pei Shao, I was joking with Yulan, you…”
Pei Zhouye had no patience to listen to words that displeased him. He grabbed the man’s neck, lifted him, and smashed him back onto the table. The man gasped in pain and stopped talking.
Gu Yuqing looked like he couldn’t bear it; after all, this was his friend who was speaking up for him. “Pei Shao, for my sake, don’t hold it against us.”
Gu Yuqing was a few years older than Pei Zhouye and the current heir to Tomorrow Group. If he asked for face, the other party should give it.
Pei Zhouye indeed let go and straightened up. Without even giving a glance in their direction, the group breathed a sigh of relief.
“Call the police.” The people behind him were stunned. Pei Zhouye didn’t look back. “Just say someone here is committing verbal sexual harassment.”
The bodyguards behind Pei Zhouye took a few looks and agreed.
Neither table had the mood to eat. Gu Yuqing’s table got up and left.
Wen Yan lowered his eyes, feeling emotions he couldn’t quite describe.
No matter what, Pei Zhouye had resolved a difficulty for him once again.
“Yan-yan, that two million was a large expenditure from my card being investigated, don’t listen to their nonsense…” The person beside him spoke up, explaining hurriedly.
Then why didn’t you say a word just now?
Wen Yan felt a few threads of nameless irritation.
“I know, I didn’t overthink it,” he said.
The two walked under the dim streetlights. Wen Yan hadn’t said much since leaving the restaurant, only responding simply.
Gu Yulan looked at Wen Yan’s profile.
Under the dim light, Wen Yan looked at the road surface, his long eyelashes drooping meekly. His high, beautiful nose bridge and pale pink thin lips were perfectly flawless. His entire being was shrouded in the hazy yellow light.
Gu Yulan’s heart trembled. He wanted to kiss Wen Yan, wanted to be with Wen Yan properly, to have a simple campus romance with him.
Undeniably, Wen Yan was truly a very good person.
Wen Yan walked outside the residential complex and stopped. Looking up, he saw Gu Yulan looking at him obsessively.
He was silent for a moment. “Yulan-ge, I’m here. You should go back quickly.”
Gu Yulan wanted to hug him but saw Wen Yan’s reluctance. He smiled bitterly and withdrew his hand.
“Yan-yan, rest well.”
Wen Yan agreed. “You too.”
The supermarket next to the complex was being renovated. Workers were busy moving posters and standees of a popular idol.
Wen Yan stood still and watched for a while, thinking that since his parents had returned to Nan City, he needed to add some things to the rental apartment himself.
Gu Yulan followed his gaze, thinking Wen Yan was looking at Lin Seran’s poster and standee. He mentioned casually, “Do you like Lin Seran?”
Lin Seran had current hit songs, hit dramas, and hit variety shows; he was considered a top celebrity. Gu Yulan knew Wen Yan didn’t chase stars, so he just asked casually.
He added, “He is Pei Zhouye’s person. He’s been filming recently, otherwise, we would have seen him at the welcome banquet last time.”
“No,” Wen Yan said. “I don’t know him. I’m going home. Goodbye, Yulan-ge.”
The two separated.
The little bit of goodwill Wen Yan had felt toward Pei Zhouye vanished again.
Pei Zhouye wasn’t purely malicious or bad; he just had that little bit of good, but not a shred of common public morality.
With such a famous star by his side, he was still thinking about someone else’s boyfriend outside.
The person being discussed in Wen Yan’s heart was currently in the shadows.
Pei Zhouye watched Wen Yan go upstairs before leaving.
Recently, there was major good news.
After Wen Yan’s group took first place in the preliminary round, they received a cooperation invitation directly from Pei Corp.
Several people sat around in a coffee shop, preparing for the upcoming interview.
There were five people in the group, four men and one woman. Wen Yan was the team leader. Except for Wen Yan, the other four had temporarily bought tickets to return to Jiang City to prepare for this interview.
Pei Corp’s people had communicated with them online. All aspects were basically negotiated. If the face-to-face talk had no issues, they could join the project team directly.
Wu Qingqing was all smiles, her eyes hiding no excitement or joy. “God really opened his eyes! Last time I made a wish in the group saying I hoped we’d get a direct internship offer, you guys said I was daydreaming.”
Wen Yan was amused by Wu Qingqing’s tone.
Duan Mingtao, wearing black-rimmed glasses, spoke gloomily from the side, “It’s almost meeting time. Finish drinking and let’s go up.”
Several people sucked down their coffee fiercely.
The five were led by an assistant to the negotiation room on the tenth floor.
Pushing the door open, Wen Yan indeed saw Pei Zhouye’s figure. Surprisingly, he wasn’t shocked.
This person was too strange; his appearance here wasn’t even unexpected to Wen Yan.
Pei Zhouye didn’t sit at the head of the table this time, but in a seat to the side. However, his oppressive aura and presence weren’t restrained in the slightest, forcing people to see him at first glance.
Today he wore a dark gray suit, sharply cut. His shirt was buttoned to the top, exuding a powerful coldness.
The project manager and the three main staff members were sweating cold sweat behind their backs. They didn’t know why they had to do this kind of work interfacing with undergraduate newcomers while the newly returned Little President Pei was supervising so formally and grandly from the side.
They introduced the project in detail—it felt more like they were interviewing.
Wen Yan seriously introduced their work results and the team members’ abilities, as well as the new project developed in cooperation with Pei Corp.
Wu Qingqing beside him went from nervous to calm, joining the conversation confidently and actively. Duan Mingtao was the team’s technical lead; when asked relevant questions, he replied concisely.
Pei Zhouye occasionally raised his eyes, his gaze sweeping coldly over Wen Yan. He threw out one or two questions at appropriate times, his voice deep and emotionless.
Wen Yan would still get nervous seeing him, worried Pei Zhouye would say something again. Fortunately, there were no difficult questions right until the end.
“This data, are you sure?” Pei Zhouye suddenly spoke.
Duan Mingtao wanted to answer, but seeing Pei Zhouye’s gaze was directed at Wen Yan, he shut his mouth again.
Wen Yan’s breath hitched slightly, but his voice was steadier than imagined when he spoke: “Yes, the results of three tests were consistent.”
Pei Zhouye didn’t speak, only raising an eyebrow very slightly.
The meeting ended, and they began to see people out. Wen Yan breathed a sigh of relief. Behind him, someone said faintly, “Team leader, stay behind.”
The other four left. The staff responsible for the interview prepared to continue staying there, but Pei Zhouye swept a glance at them. They froze for a moment, then also said goodbye and left.
“President Pei,” Wen Yan asked directly, “may I ask if there is anything else?”
Pei Zhouye put Wen Yan’s group’s documents back on the table and looked up at Wen Yan. “Your workstation will be separate from theirs, near my office. You will be responsible for project reporting and interfacing directly with me. Can you accept that?”
