Chapter 38: Awakening part 1
Ning Yunyi and the other two boarded Hao Yan’s spaceship at the entrance of the Underground City.
It was a party of three because Elias, upon hearing they were heading to the Ning family home, had pleaded with Ning Yunyi to let him tag along, citing his S-rank Spiritual Power as a means of protection.
Ning Yunyi didn’t refuse, and Young Master Bai naturally wouldn’t oppose his uncle’s decision.
From the moment he boarded the ship, Elias sat cautiously in the back, hands on his knees, head lowered, his smooth silver hair hanging down, looking exceptionally obedient.
Young Master Bai, sprawled in his seat, glanced at him. “Do you really not have a wristband? How do you usually contact your parents?”
Elias pursed his lips. “…I don’t have parents.”
Young Master Bai was rendered speechless, almost wanting to slap his own mouth. Why did he have to be so chatty?
Feeling a surge of pity, he leaned over. “How about I buy you a wristband?”
Elias shook his head in refusal. “I can buy one myself once I get my salary this month.”
Young Master Bai finally shut up.
Hao Yan, who was piloting the spaceship up front, also glanced back curiously. He clearly hadn’t expected that Mr. Bai would spend over thirty million Star Coins just to recruit an employee.
Ning Yunyi heard their conversation clearly. He wasn’t as easily fooled as Young Master Bai; he didn’t believe Elias’s excuse for wanting to go to the Ning family.
But even if he pressed for the truth, Elias wouldn’t tell, so he decided to wait for the day Elias exposed himself.
Either way, he could determine one thing: Elias held no hostility toward them, and that was enough.
When the group arrived at District A, they met up with two other small spaceships at a street corner.
Ning Yunyi raised an eyebrow and looked at Hao Yan. “People you called?”
Hao Yan grinned. “It was Joe. He heard Mr. Bai was going to the Ning family and was afraid Ning Mengde would welch on the bet, so Joe’s father had him bring the family’s most formidable bodyguards to back Mr. Bai up.”
Ning Yunyi didn’t reject the goodwill. After all, sometimes having numbers on your side really did provide enough imposing momentum. Moreover, after a quick probe, he found that the twenty people in these two vehicles were all top-tier S-rank bodyguards.
…
While the three small spaceships rushed toward the Ning family home, inside a room in the Ning residence, Ning Mengde watched the figure on his communication display, his face pale.
“Jiayi, you have to help me. I signed that agreement with Young Master Hao for you. But now the deadline is approaching, and I haven’t even scraped together a fraction of the amount!”
On the screen, Mu Jiayi sat in a spacious villa lounge, quietly watching the agitated Ning Mengde. “I said I would help you, but you know that after bidding for the half-beast, I don’t have any spare Star Coins on hand.”
“Then what do I do?” Ning Mengde stood up abruptly. He had transferred all the Star Coins he usually earned to Mu Jiayi, and even gave him the remainder after leaving South City last time.
What had Jiayi said back then? He said he was going to another district to have Zong Ling bid for another half-beast, and fearing it wouldn’t be enough, asked Ning Mengde to transfer his funds first, promising to help him make up the difference later.
But now, he didn’t even have his original savings left.
Mu Jiayi’s expression remained unhurried. “You’re too impatient. Leaving aside the fact that Young Master Hao doesn’t lack that ten million Star Coins, whether he remembers it is one thing, but even if he does, would he really want to make an enemy of the Ning family? If he dares to come to the Ning family with great fanfare, it won’t just be the Ning family losing face.”
Ning Mengde calmed down slightly. “But that Mr. Bai next to him doesn’t look like a kind person. He was the one who competed with me on Hao Yan’s behalf. What if he comes to collect?”
Mu Jiayi’s expression stiffened, then he looked at Ning Mengde with eyes full of guilt. “I really did intend to transfer all my Star Coins to you after Zong Ling won the half-beast. That would have been enough. Who knew… You know Zong Ling only got engaged to me for a reason; the person he holds in his heart is your cousin, Ning Yunyi. When he saw that red-eyed rabbit in South City, he was entranced right then and there because that rabbit looked a bit like Ning Yunyi. I took him to another place, and he just left. I had no choice; the bid was already placed, so I had to pay for it myself. I even owe others money because of this.”
At this point, Mu Jiayi lowered his eyes, his shoulders slumping dejectedly, looking utterly desolate. “I didn’t expect that after so long, his heart is still with Ning Yunyi.”
Hearing his crush mention Ning Yunyi, Ning Mengde felt a pang of sympathy. “How could he do that? He’s engaged to you, yet he’s thinking of someone else!”
Mu Jiayi sighed. “If only that accident hadn’t happened back then. If not for that, maybe I…” He looked up at Ning Mengde quietly, his eyes full of regret.
Ning Mengde’s face instantly turned red, unwilling to pressure Mu Jiayi any further. “I’ll think of another way.”
Mu Jiayi knew when to stop. “Don’t worry too much. If they really dare to come, you might as well let Uncle Ning pay it back for you first. You’re his youngest son; would he really let the ancestral home be taken away? When Professor Ning had his accident, it happened in a rush. There must be plenty of good things left in that house.”
Ning Mengde thought about it and agreed, though his father hadn’t told him anything. “But what if…”
Mu Jiayi comforted him a few more times, promising to go over there now. If things really reached an irreversible point, he would step in and ask Young Master Hao for a few days’ grace. By then, as long as Zong Ling was willing to lend the Star Coins, it would be fine.
Ning Mengde finally relaxed, but he didn’t dare leave his room.
Just then, the butler hurried in from the main gate, his expression strange and unsightly. Seeing this from upstairs, Ning Mengde slammed his window shut with a swish.
Ning Er (Second Uncle Ning) was watching the latest Star Network broadcast, looking relaxed and at ease.
When the butler entered and interrupted his train of thought, he looked over with dissatisfaction. “Why such a panic?”
Usually, the butler would certainly restrain such hasty behavior, but right now he had no mind for it; he was completely panicked. “Sir, it’s bad! Something has happened!”
Ning Er frowned. “What happened?” Did Mengde cause trouble outside again?
The butler’s face was pale. “Some creditors have arrived outside. They brought twenty S-rank bodyguards… They said… they said Young Master Mengde owes them money and used this house as collateral. Now the deadline is up. They gave us two choices: either pay the money to clear the debt, or… move out and vacate the house!”
“What?!” Ning Er’s face changed completely. He shot up, finally understanding why the butler was so panicked. Good heavens, twenty S-ranks! Bodyguards!
Anyone with that kind of configuration was either extremely wealthy or extremely powerful!
He couldn’t afford to offend either!
Ning Er remembered something and roared in anger, “Ning Mengde! You little beast, get out here!”
Upstairs, Ning Mengde wanted to play deaf and dumb, but soon his door was kicked open, and he was dragged out by Ning Er.
Once Ning Er understood the whole story, he had the urge to kill Ning Mengde. “How dare you? How dare you use the ancestral home as collateral?”
Ning Mengde lowered his head. “Father, I was ninety percent sure at the time. Who knew…”
Ning Er laughed in anger. The butler reminded him anxiously from the side, “Master, the people outside said they’ll give you ten minutes. If you don’t come out, they’ll force their way in.”
Ning Er took a deep breath. “Go invite them to the reception hall. I’ll be there shortly.”
When Ning Yunyi’s group got off the spaceships in a formidable array, they immediately attracted the attention of the surrounding people. Curious questions arose. Good heavens, how long has the Ning family been quiet before something happened again?
Last time it was Professor Ning, this time it’s Ning Er?
Is the Feng Shui of this Ning ancestral home bad? Accidents happening one after another?
