Chapter 39: Confrontation part 1
The red-eyed rabbit’s eyes widened in shock. It clearly hadn’t expected the person who had been unconscious for so long to suddenly wake up.
He… he actually woke up?
Wait, if they were discovered, wouldn’t they all be wiped out?
“Ji ji!” Run!
The red-eyed rabbit hugged the little milk rabbit and shouted at the person walking out from the flying dust. The man’s spiritual sea was depleted, and the only meager spiritual power he had was what the rabbit had transferred to him earlier.
How could he possibly be a match for these people?
Standing at the edge of the pit, the thugs from North City, initially surprised by the scene, burst into laughter. “Didn’t expect there was another one hiding? Good heavens, brothers, get another net! Our chance to get rich has come!”
The others immediately went to grab another net. But as the man in the pit walked closer, one of them froze. “Wait, boss, this guy looks… a bit familiar.”
The leader of the thugs looked up. In the dim light, the face that had been plastered on wanted posters all over the galaxy for the past few months appeared before him.
Covered in dust and looking utterly defeated, his thin face made his deep eyes seem even colder and heavier. He stared at them now, his gaze void of emotion, as if looking at dead men.
One of the thugs trembled. “He wouldn’t be… that Ning Zhanfeng, would he?”
The leader snapped out of it, his eyes lighting up. “Catch him! If not, kill him! The wanted poster says we can claim the reward even if we bring back a corpse!” This wasn’t something a couple of rabbits could compare to. Capturing Ning Zhanfeng might even earn them a direct promotion!
But in the next instant, just as he raised his hand, a powerful and sharp blade of air, formed by spiritual power, sliced through the air.
Without giving anyone a chance, in a split second, the victor was decided.
One moment, the red-eyed rabbit was sweating for the man; the next, he watched as the figures fell silently one by one. Not only him, but the little milk rabbit in his arms also froze, its paws trembling slightly.
The red-eyed rabbit recovered, covered the little milk rabbit’s eyes, and looked at the person who had walked up to them.
Ning Zhanfeng remained expressionless. He raised his hand and tore at the sealed suppression net, snapping the golden threads completely.
After doing all this, Ning Zhanfeng lowered his head and looked at the two dusty rabbits inside.
He tilted his head and suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood. At the same time, the rampant spiritual power around him, no longer under control, surged wildly. He sealed all his spiritual power once more, then fell straight backward.
The red-eyed rabbit was terrified and immediately rushed over, using himself as a cushion to barely protect the man’s head.
On the other side, Ning Yunyi returned smoothly to the Underground City castle. The moment he opened the door, the little kitten, hiding entirely behind the big cat in the corner, caught his scent and immediately rushed out.
He dove headfirst into Ning Yunyi’s arms, his beast eyes red, pitifully hooking his little claws onto his father’s collar. “Meow meow?”
Ning Yunyi quickly pinched the little claws, rubbed the small head to comfort him, and lowered his head to kiss him. “Were you worried? It was Father who miscalculated the time. Is the cub hungry?”
The little kitten shook his head, pressing his paw on his bulging belly.
He had already eaten canned food; he just missed his father.
It was the first time they had been apart for so long. It had been dark for a while, and usually, by this time, his father would be helping him wash up.
Ning Yunyi teased the little guy by stroking his tail, finally dispelling most of the cub’s anxiety. Only then did the kitten jump onto Ning Yunyi’s shoulder, nuzzling his small head affectionately against his cheek and neck.
Ning Yunyi felt ticklish and raised his hand to scratch the little kitten’s chin. As he looked down, he happened to meet the eyes of the big cat, who was lying there, flicking its tail and peeking at the scene.
Ning Yunyi raised an eyebrow and teased, “Does the big cat want comforting too?”
The big cat, who had been touched by the scene, froze at Ning Yunyi’s question.
In its memory, it had always been alone. Its father was old when it was born, and although he cared, they weren’t close.
It was the youngest, and its older brothers disliked it, though it never understood why.
The only sister who showed kindness left home soon after, and the next news was of her accident. To find out the truth, it joined the military, becoming even more solitary.
After so many years, it thought all father-son relationships were like his with his father.
But the two before him clearly broke his past understanding. For some reason, watching this scene made him feel a bit envious.
Enveloped by this emotion, almost possessed, the big cat nodded its head.
Ning Yunyi raised an eyebrow. Rare indeed. He squatted down, pinched the big cat’s two ears, and rubbed its large head. Just as the big cat was debating whether to let him continue rubbing or flick his tail and leave, Ning Yunyi suddenly said, “You’ve been shedding a lot lately with the season change. How about… I give you a bath later and wash off all the loose fur?”
The big cat’s tail froze mid-swing. It looked incredulously at the serious face so close to its own, then violently shook its large head, freed its face from the man’s hands, and dashed away.
Ning Yunyi’s amused laughter followed from behind. Clearly, he was teasing it again.
Big Cat: His comforting is completely different from what I imagined!
Because it was late, Ning Yunyi took out the braised pork rice from his space. The two humans and one cat had a simple meal. He watched as the big cat finished eating and retreated into its nest, not coming out again.
Ning Yunyi stopped teasing it and carried the little kitten upstairs.
In the study, Ning Yunyi sat at the desk, cuddling the little kitten in his arms, stroking its fur absentmindedly.
The little kitten sat obediently in his father’s arms. He could sense that although his father had been smiling since returning, his mood wasn’t high.
His tail wrapped around Ning Yunyi’s wrist, his small head nuzzling him in comfort.
Ning Yunyi didn’t hide anything from the little cub. He placed him on the table and took out the box containing the letter. “Father went to the old house today and got the letter your grandfather left for Father.”
The little kitten rested his head on his father’s wrist, looking up in confusion. “Meow?” What happened to Grandfather?
Ning Yunyi pinched his pointed ears. “Nothing, we’ll see him soon.”
He took out the letter and opened it. As he suspected, it was hastily written by Ning’s father. Just a few lines, telling him to take the cub and flee immediately, leave the First Star, and not return for a few years.
The rest were instructions on how to access a hidden account containing the liquid funds left for him and Big Brother Ning.
Ning’s father must have known something was about to happen to the Ning family but didn’t have time to send a message, so he hurriedly left this letter.
Letting the original body take the little cub away was also because of the little guy’s identity as a half-beast.
Once exposed, the consequences would be dire.
He had given the original body a special, untraceable account. Combined with the funds left behind, it would have been enough for the father and son to live without worry.
Unfortunately, Ning’s father hadn’t anticipated that at such a critical moment, his younger brother would kick them while they were down. For his own selfish desires, he conspired with Mu Jiayi, first driving away the original body, then having Ji Hao pretend to save him and take him away from the First Star.
Although the final result was the same as Ning’s father hoped—leaving the First Star—one was active departure, while the other was forced.
And the latter was in “hell mode.”
