Part 3
Three brief digits. Ning Yunyi guessed what they meant at a glance.
Zong Hao leaned over. “What’s this?”
Ning Yunyi explained the plan. “We canât leave today. The Crown Prince must have just received the news. Heâs suspicious and will send people to investigate. We need to wrap things up. The purpose of this ‘Godefroi’ identity is to track the fugitive on the bounty list, so weâll catch that fugitive, get the reward, and then go back.”
A beginning and an end. Even if the Crown Prince truly sent someone to check, they wouldn’t find anything wrong.
He tapped the number and laughed. “I’m in luck. That fugitive happens to be in this very room.”
They lived on the second floor; the third floor was at the end of the hallway right above them.
Zong Hao asked, “When do you plan to strike?”
“Tomorrow night.” This gave them time to recover and play the part to the fullest.
Zong Hao nodded. “Iâll go with you.” His “big lion” persona needed to be put to use.
Ning Yunyi had no objections. He looked at the rabbit. “Lady Zong, rest and recover here in peace. Weâll handle the rest.”
The rabbit looked at him gratefully and suddenly sat up straight, bowing solemnly to him.
Ning Yunyi hurried forward, but Zong Hao waved his hand. “Let her thank you. You saved the Bai Young City Lord; youâve saved the lives of both mother and son.”
His sister had always been a person who distinguished clearly between gratitude and grudges. Not letting her repay the debt would only make her feel uneasy.
Ning Yunyi had no choice but to accept. These siblings were quite alike.
He had accidentally saved the heavily injured big cat, who then helped him in return by clearing Ning Yunfeng’s name and doing so much behind the scenes.
In fact, it could already be considered repayment.
He had a selfish reason for saving Lady Zong as well; he couldn’t change the status of shifters on his own. So even if Zong Hao hadn’t been there, he would have saved her.
Zong Hao saw it differently. Regardless of the reasons, it was a fact that Ning Yunyi had saved them.
A debt of gratitude must be repaid.
That night, the person and two beasts didn’t leave the room, but they weren’t idle either.
Using invisibility, Ning Yunyi jumped out the window and checked room 302. He confirmed that one of the fugitives inside was indeed on the wanted list.
There were five people in the room. Aside from the fugitive who was S-rank, the other four were A-rankâlikely his subordinates.
The five weren’t high-level, but the fact that they could hide for so long and evade so many trackers meant they weren’t simple.
Sure enough, after monitoring them all night, Ning Yunyi found the reason they could evade tracking and even counter-kill Interstellar hunters.
They had a batch of poison powder. If scattered, it could instantly cause a mental power expert’s focus to scatter, making them unable to use mental pressure.
In other words, it was essentially “Limping Powder.”
After dark the next day, Ning Yunyi exchanged a look with the prepared big cat. The person and the cat put on gas masks.
Ning Yunyi felt, for the first time, that his “broke-the-bank” hoarding hadn’t been in vain.
Everything was coming into use. Truly, if youâre going to hoard, donât do it halfwayâhoard everything.
Ning Yunyi and Zong Hao, disguised as a big lion, left the room and headed upstairs with great fanfare.
Reaching room 302, he knocked politely.
A harsh voice came from within: “Who is it?”
Ning Yunyi laughed. “Your father.”
Likely never having met someone so arrogant, someone flung the door open. It was a lackey. “You looking to die? Come in if youâve got the guts.”
The lackey saw only one man and a lion. Their level was only S-rank; he wasn’t afraid at all.
With the poison powder in hand, anyone who came was just delivering their head.
Ning Yunyi and the big cat nodded in unison. “Sure.”
Once the person and cat entered, there was a commotion inside. It was quite a rowdy struggle. The guest across the hall had poked their head out the moment Ning Yunyi appeared and, sensing something was wrong, went to call the hotel security.
Heâd heard the Desert Planet was chaotic, but people couldn’t just fight at the door, could they?
What if innocent bystanders were injured?
By the time security arrived, the door to 302 opened. Ning Yunyi walked out dragging the fugitive and saw the security. “Youâre late. This bounty is mine.”
Security: “???” What bounty?
Ning Yunyi roughly lifted the fugitiveâs head. Seeing that familiar face, the security and the neighbor were both stunned. Holy crap, itâs a walking five million star coins!
The neighbor beat his chest, grieving the lost opportunity to get rich overnight.
Ning Yunyiâs red eyes stared at the neighbor.
The neighbor shuddered and slammed his door shut. “I-I’m not fighting you for it!” Boohoo, clearly this guy looks more like a fugitive.
With one stare, his legs went limp.
Zong Haoâs heart was in knots. Why are you scaring him?
Ning Yunyi gave him a side-eye. You donât understand. This is called deepening the impression. When the Crown Princeâs people come to check those who recently arrived on the planet, this neighbor will be the first witness to clear my suspicion.
With his fierce, bandit-like image, how could he look like a “great philanthropist” who would save people?
Ning Yunyi had guessed correctly. The person in charge sent people to investigate the list of recent arrivals. When they checked the neighbor, the man rambled on for an hour about this “Godefroi’s” heinous behavior.
Consequently, the investigators walked out and drew a giant “X” across the list.
If this Godefroi was suspicious, he would stand on his head and swallow a hundred tubes of nutrient agents without water! Raw!
Ning Yunyi didn’t know if the man swallowed them or not. After handing over the fugitive and receiving the five million bounty, he boarded a spaceship with “Zongzong” and the invisible Lady Zong hiding in the luggage, beginning their return journey.
Three days later, after arriving on Capital Planet, Ning Yunyi and the two beasts took a small flyer to Godefroiâs manor.
They entered brazenly. The butler hurried to take the luggage behind them. Once the door closed, Ning Yunyi didn’t lower his guard.
They entered the attic in the backyard. Once the person and two beasts were inside and the door was locked, the real Godefroi, the lion Zongzong, and Ichi emerged from the secret room.
Looking at the disguises on Ning Yunyi and the big cat, even though he had seen them before, Ichi still found it fascinating.
“Mr. Bai, youâre truly amazing. Standing together, I canât tell who is who. And this big cat… he really looks like Zongzong…” As Ichi spoke, he curiously tried to reach out and pet the long fur.
Zong Hao dodged to the side with a complicated heart.
Ichi huffed. “Look at him, heâs wary of strangers. He even dislikes me.”
Ning Yunyi almost choked on his own saliva. Is it possible that heâs not wary of strangers, but ‘murdering an acquaintance’?
Don’t you think he looks a lot like your Marshal?
Ning Yunyi and the big cat exchanged a look. He doesn’t know?
Zong Hao flicked his long tail. Clearly not.
Ning Yunyi cast a look of pity at Ichi, who was still staring longingly at the big catâs fur. Youâd better not try to sneak a pet. If you knew the truth, youâd regret it so much you’d never recover.
While Ichi was scanning the big cat, Ning Yunyi couldn’t take his eyes off Zongzong.
A real big lion! Real long fur! A fluffy head, a fluffy tail… he just wanted to pet it.
Godefroi gave a hearty laugh and patted Zongzong. “Does Mr. Bai want to give him a pet?”
Ning Yunyi rubbed his hands together. “Can I?”
“Naturally. Zongzong likes Mr. Bai too.”
To be able to play him so realistically, Godefroi was seeing himself from this angle for the first time; it was quite novel.
Ning Yunyi didn’t stand on ceremony.
He reached out. Following his masterâs instruction, Zongzong lay down obediently. His tail flicked, and the tuft of differently-colored fur seemed to flick right at Ning Yunyiâs heart.
Ning Yunyi swallowed hard and crouched down. He reached out with both hands, aiming for those two furry ears.
He had never petted a real lion before.
The big catâs fur was fake, just a bionic covering; the texture was different.
The moment he was about to touch him, the big cat suddenly meowed a warning.
Ning Yunyi looked back and found the big cat flicking its tail at Ichi, who was trying to sneak a hand in, and baring its teeth in a threat.
Caught, Ichi gave a “hehe” laugh. “Mr. Bai, I’ll just give him one pet, not much.”
Zong Hao looked at Ning Yunyi with a look of wordless pleading, like he was looking at a heartless man. He looked quite aggrieved. Are you going to do something? If you dare to pet him, Ichi will definitely dare to pet me.
Ning Yunyi stood up with regret. He said to Ichi, “Lord Ichi, how can you just pet a cat? They say you can’t touch a tiger’s rear, and a big cat is the same.”
Ichi rubbed his nose and threw up his hands. “I’m curious, just curious.”
Ning Yunyi still had to take Lady Zong back. He didn’t stay long and soon left Godefroiâs manor through the secret room.
Just before reaching the end of the path, he turned back quickly and gave the lionâs large ear a pinch.
It was soft and felt amazing.
