Chapter 30: [Gentle Affection Side Story] Her Past (Part 2)
As Shen Yi spoke, she reached out to snatch back the money bag. However, because she was truly small, she fell to the ground with just a light push from the leader.
She wasn’t someone afraid of pain. Even though her arms and legs were scraped by hitting the ground, she gritted her teeth and didn’t make a sound.
The person glared at her contemptuously. Shen Yi angrily bit his arm. Perhaps due to the pain, the person let go of the money bag in the next instant, and it returned to Shen Yi’s hands.
But in the end, how much strength does a child of a few years have?
To shake off Shen Yi, the person simply kicked her directly in the abdomen, then snatched the money bag back.
As if not satisfied, he kicked her fiercely a few more times.
Shen Wan saw this scene. By the time she tried to rush over to protect her sister, it was already too late.
Soon, Shen Yi’s cries grew weaker. Before Shen Wan’s incredulous eyes, her sister’s body was covered in injuries.
When Shen Wan pushed past the obstruction of those people and rushed over, Shen Yi was covered in bruises from the beating.
These people had attacked a seven-year-old child without restraint or measure. Coupled with the fact that Shen Yi had suffered from cold illness before, her breath was now extremely weak.
Seeing Shen Yi’s state, those people were afraid of causing a death. When Shen Wan threw herself over to check on Shen Yi, they hurriedly signaled their companions to leave.
How could Shen Yi not be afraid of pain?
But she endured the agony, slowly raising her palm to stroke Shen Wan’s face, then leaning into her embrace.
When tears flowed down Shen Wan’s cheeks, Shen Yi comforted her in a low voice, “Sister… I’m fine.”
“How can you be fine? Sister will take you to find a doctor.”
Shen Wan didn’t think about chasing the money bag anymore. Shen Yi’s injuries were truly serious, and she feared they were running out of time.
After wiping the tear stains from her cheeks, she, at only ten years old, struggled to carry her seven-year-old sister on her back, walking forward with difficulty, stumbling along the way.
Shen Wan carried Shen Yi out of that area. The heavens were unkind, suddenly pouring down heavy rain at that moment.
To make matters worse, it was already late, and the doors of every medical clinic were tightly shut.
Shen Wan draped her outer garment over Shen Yi, terrified she would catch a cold and worsen her injuries.
She knocked on the doors of medical clinics from house to house, but most remained tightly closed with no one answering.
Shen Wan didn’t know how long she walked. It was so long that her consciousness became somewhat hazy, and her whole body burned with heat, until she reached a medical clinic ahead.
That clinic had a lantern hanging, which rekindled hope in Shen Wan’s heart.
She supported Shen Yi with one hand with difficulty, while knocking the door ring with the other, shouting incessantly, “Is anyone there? Doctor?”
The door opened quickly. Shen Yi was soaked through by the heavy rain. Due to her blurred consciousness, she could only roughly make out that the person in front of her was a man.
Shen Wan held Shen Yi, her eyes full of pleading. She said, “Doctor, I beg you, save my sister…”
The man roughly scanned Shen Wan’s attire and sneered. “Do you have money?”
“I do, I do,” Shen Wan said immediately.
Although a lot of money had been robbed, she had saved some silver before. She took out many scattered copper coins from her body and hurriedly handed them to the man.
She knew she must look extremely wretched, but she couldn’t care about that. She took out all the money on her person. “Is this enough?”
The man gave a snort and a glance, speaking contemptuously, “Are you dismissing a beggar?”
With that, he shut the door tight. No matter how Shen Wan shouted, he did not come out again.
This result made Shen Wan, who was burning with fever, feel her heart turn completely cold.
Unfortunately, there was no shelter from the rain here. Shen Wan could only use the last of her strength to carry Shen Yi and move forward.
One step… two steps?
Misfortunes never come singly. Before she could reach the shelter ahead, her consciousness gradually collapsed, and she soon fell to the ground along with Shen Yi.
Could it be… they were really going to die here together?
Shen Wan half-cradled her sister. She had no strength left now. Rainwater mixed with tears flowed down her cheeks.
She was truly too helpless. A ten-year-old child did not know how to face impending death, and her body trembled slightly.
“Little girl, why are you here?”
Shen Wan held onto her last shred of consciousness and looked toward the voice. She saw only a white-robed youth holding a bamboo umbrella.
“P-Please save my sister.” Shen Wan almost gritted her teeth to force the words out.
At first, she didn’t see the youth’s face clearly; she only heard his helpless sigh.
He squatted halfway down, moving the bamboo umbrella over to shield them from the rain.
Perhaps seeing such a tragic scene evoked pity; he reached out his hand, infusing spiritual power into Shen Wan.
Gradually, Shen Wan finally felt her consciousness clear a little. Then she saw the youth continue to use spiritual power to treat Shen Yi.
Shen Yi’s originally pale face finally regained some color, her wounds gradually healed, and her face, which had been as bitter as dead ash, finally showed some vitality.
Seeing that it was about enough, the youth stopped his hand.
In the moment he turned his head, Shen Wan finally saw the youth’s appearance clearly.
His features were cold and peerlessly beautiful, his gaze concerned with the common people.
The youth stood up and spoke slowly, “It is fine now, little girl.”
Shen Wan finally regained her strength. Half-supporting her sister, she looked at this otherworldly person and was stunned.
She couldn’t help but murmur, “Are you… a god?”
Hearing this, the person smiled. That single smile felt like it could last for ten thousand years.
He said he was no compassionate god.
