Chapter 18: Deep Sea Farewell?
In Ling Xi’s azure eyes, a tide of anger more terrifying than the deep sea surged at this moment.
The body in his arms was so warm, but the smell of blood at the tip of his nose stung his heart.
He actually wanted to… protect him? At all costs!
How dare those damned humans, how dare they hurt him?!
Ling Xi had a splitting headache. He remembered nothing, yet the only thing he wanted was to protect the person in his arms.
Because this person had just shielded him, showing no threat to him at all.
“Woo~”
Amidst the deafening roar, a cry like a whale’s song resonated.
Ling Xi’s body underwent earth-shaking changes again.
He was no longer human, but a monster from the deep sea, powerful and terrifying.
A huge water sphere wrapped him and Gu Yunsheng. The men retreated in terror; they had never seen such a terrifying sight.
“Shoot! Shoot quickly!”
Bullets hit the water sphere but couldn’t even raise a ripple.
The giant dark-blue fish tail, carrying the chill of the deep sea, slammed against the fragile cave walls again and again.
Every impact was accompanied by the crashing of rocks and the terrified screams of those people.
“Boom—”
With a loud noise as if the sky and earth were cracking, the already unstable cave was forcibly smashed open by Ling Xi’s giant tail, creating a huge breach.
Seawater, carrying the scent of the sea and the roar of the deep, rushed into the cave.
“No! What kind of monster is this! Help!”
Those once arrogant villains were now like duckweed beaten by giant waves, struggling powerlessly and crying out.
The cold seawater quickly submerged their heads, swallowing all their desperate cries for help.
A huge vortex formed in the center of the cave, sweeping up everything and ruthlessly destroying it all.
Ling Xi’s mind was still chaotic, but he knew he wanted to protect the person in his arms, and he wanted those who hurt him to pay the price!
“Ah! Help!”
“I don’t want to die!”
Desperate screams echoed in the cave, but were soon drowned out by the huge sound of rushing water.
Ling Xi inside the water sphere, however, paid no attention to the humans’ cries for help.
He looked down at Gu Yunsheng in his arms. Gu Yunsheng’s face was pale as paper, his brows tightly furrowed, obviously enduring great pain.
He reached out and gently stroked Gu Yunsheng’s cheek, feeling his weak breathing.
Confirming Gu Yunsheng was still alive, Ling Xi finally relaxed a little.
He looked up and around, finding that the intruders were either dead or injured, and some had been swept away by the seawater vortex, their whereabouts unknown.
Confirming there were no more threats, Ling Xi retracted the water sphere, held Gu Yunsheng tightly in his arms, and leaped into the turbulent sea.
Salty seawater poured into his nose, bringing a violent sense of suffocation. The thin man coughed violently. He struggled to climb up from the cold seawater, facing a mess.
“Cough, cough, cough… Damn it, this hellhole…”
He wiped the seawater and mud off his face and looked around.
The originally small cave was now even more dilapidated. Rubble and broken stalactites were everywhere. The air was filled with the stench of seawater and a nauseating smell of blood.
His brothers—some were crushed under giant rocks, silent long ago; some lay dying in puddles, groaning in pain; and others had been washed away by the seawater to unknown places, life or death uncertain.
“All dead? Are they all f*cking dead?!” The man’s eyes widened in terror, his voice trembling, revealing disbelief.
He walked with difficulty to a subordinate who was still relatively intact and pushed him hard: “Hey! Wake up! Stop playing dead! Get up!”
However, the only response was weak groans and a heavy smell of blood.
The man sat down on the ground in despair, his mind replaying the terrifying scene just now.
That man… no, that wasn’t a human at all! It was a monster! A monster from the deep sea!
That huge fish tail, the ferocious face, those scales, those claws, those bloodthirsty eyes…
He remembered the merman, Sailuo, they captured before.
Sailuo’s power was already enough to frighten them, but compared to the monster just now, Sailuo was simply like a docile pet.
What exactly was he? Why did he possess such terrible power?
Why did he protect that human? Did they have some unspeakable secret?
Countless questions churned in his mind but received no answers.
The man hugged his head in pain, forcing himself not to think about these things. What was the use of thinking about this now? The reality before him was the most fatal thing.
He failed, and failed miserably.
Not only did he not catch Gu Yunsheng, but he also lost so many brothers. After returning, what awaited him would be Boss K’s rage and endless torture.
…
Eyelids fluttered, and Gu Yunsheng woke up from chaos.
Trying hard to open his eyes, the surroundings were shadowy, as if something was glowing.
He rubbed his eyes vigorously before seeing clearly. He was deep under the sea, lying in a giant shell. Soft light poured down from the shell’s opening, illuminating the seawater with colorful brilliance, beautiful as a dream. He wanted to move, but his whole body felt as if it had been run over by a car, hurting terribly.
Wait, where was he?
He propped himself up on his arms, wanting to sit up.
Not far away, on a throne made of coral and shells, was a familiar figure.
He lay on his side on the throne, long hair scattered casually. That face, even with a trace of fatigue, was still so handsome that one dared not look directly.
The huge fish tail swayed gently in the seawater, shimmering with starlight, suffocatingly beautiful.
The seabed was calm and unrestrained, as if all slaughter and conflict had nothing to do with this place.
Gu Yunsheng’s brain suddenly felt pricked by a needle. What about those people in the hospital? Were they all dead? And Ling Xi, did he remember him? Countless questions exploded in his mind, making him dizzy.
“Cough, cough, cough…”
Gu Yunsheng’s light cough awakened the lightly sleeping Ling Xi.
He slowly opened his eyes, and in his vision was the human who had shielded him behind his back.
Their eyes met. Ling Xi flicked his tail to wrap around Gu Yunsheng’s waist, pulling him directly in front of him. His eyes held unreadable emotions.
“Ah… Ling Xi, do you recognize me?” Gu Yunsheng’s voice trembled due to the pain of the tail winding around him, but he still tried hard to get an answer from Ling Xi.
A trace of confusion flashed in Ling Xi’s azure eyes. He frowned slightly, seeming to try hard to recall something.
After a long time, he parted his thin lips, his voice low and hoarse, like the sound of a conch shell rubbing. “Who are you?”
Gu Yunsheng’s heart sank, a chill rushing from his feet to his heart. He doesn’t know me? Did Ling Xi’s multiple personalities not return to the initial state?
Before Gu Yunsheng could react, Ling Xi suddenly leaned close to him, cold fingertips gently stroking his cheek. “You have a very nice-smelling pheromone on you. Like roses, and like…” He paused, seeming to look for a suitable adjective. “Like the smell of sunshine.”
Gu Yunsheng was stunned. This familiar tone, this doting look, was clearly the familiar Ling Xi!
“Ling Xi, do you really not remember me? I am Gu Yunsheng!” Gu Yunsheng grabbed Ling Xi’s hand, eager to awaken his memory.
Ling Xi’s eyes had a moment of clarity, but it was soon replaced by confusion. He shook his head. “I don’t know what you are saying, but I like the smell on you. Will you stay by my side?” This sentence was like a hook, firmly catching Gu Yunsheng’s heart, making him think for a moment that living at the bottom of the sea like this wouldn’t be bad.
Ling Xi’s azure eyes were full of expectation, like a child longing for candy, making it unbearable to refuse.
Gu Yunsheng’s heart trembled violently, as if tightly gripped by an invisible hand. An indescribable sorrow welled up.
He didn’t know which personality of Ling Xi was dominant at this moment, nor did he know if this plea to stay came from sincerity or just instinctive dependence.
But Gu Yunsheng understood that he couldn’t indulge in the tenderness before him. He had more important things to do.
At least now, Ling Xi was safe.
He remembered that not long ago, he had solemnly promised the System in his mind that his transmigration must have a mission, which was to find a way to destroy that black-hearted hospital and rescue those innocent lives from the devil’s claws.
And it was clearly verified that Mr. K behind the hospital would definitely destroy marine life at any cost to pay for their greed.
He absolutely could not let Ling Xi become the next victim.
“I can’t stay here right now,” Gu Yunsheng hardened his heart, pushing away Ling Xi’s fingers wrapped around his neck, his tone carrying a trace of reluctance and resolve. “I still have very important things that I must do.” He comforted himself, treating it as the last escape.
This time it was absolutely against his will.
Was it responsibility?
Was it morality?
Or was it…
He dared not think further, because he was afraid he would waver.
Ling Xi tilted his head slightly, a trace of confusion in his azure eyes. He extended his slender fingers and gently rubbed Gu Yunsheng’s cheek, his tone carrying a trace of doubt and puzzlement. “What important thing is more relaxing than being free in the deep sea?”
As he spoke, his fish tail swayed unconsciously, kicking up small currents. “Isn’t it good to stay?”
Ling Xi’s gaze held a trace of expectation and longing, as if waiting for Gu Yunsheng’s answer.
The next second, seeming not to get the desired answer, the tail loosened around Gu Yunsheng’s waist, and Gu Yunsheng drifted with the current…
The seawater was like gentle hands, pushing Gu Yunsheng further and further away. He looked back and saw Ling Xi’s figure gradually becoming a small dot, finally disappearing into the shimmering seawater.
“Just letting me go like this?” An indescribable sense of loss welled up in Gu Yunsheng’s heart. Like an abandoned puppy, he whimpered aggrievedly.
Clearly he said he liked the smell on me just now, and now he lets me leave. As expected of a scumbag fish, changing his face faster than flipping a book.
Gu Yunsheng alternated his arms, struggling to push aside the seawater and swim desperately upward. Returning to the shore made him both excited and afraid.
Excited to challenge a great deed he had never imagined in another novel world; afraid of being found by the so-called Mr. K from the hospital. With his own strength alone, he might really “receive a lunchbox” (die).
But thinking that he could rescue marine life and contribute to ecological balance, he instantly felt his life was full of meaning and value. Even if he died, it would be quite heroic.
Moreover, he had no cares in this world anyway. Not a single relative. Even if something really happened, no one would be sad for him.
