Chapter 52: The Host’s Other Side “Aren’t you quite the fighter!”…
By the time they reached this point, the car could no longer drive further in.
Lu Xunye scanned the QR code to pay, suppressing the uneasiness in his heart as he said to the driver, “Could I trouble you to wait for me here for a while? It won’t take long.”
The driver turned the steering wheel, maneuvering the car around to face the direction they came from before stopping. He unlocked the doors and thought for a moment. “I still have to take orders. I can wait for you for thirty minutes at most.”
The reason he took a taxi was that the current Lu Xunye not only didn’t know how to drive but also didn’t have a license, and of course… didn’t have a car.
He agreed and got out of the car.
Leaving the warmth of the vehicle, the cold wind blew, making him shiver instantly. He complained to the System: [Do you really think a normal person would come here to camp?]
The air after the rain carried a dampness. The rain hadn’t been heavy, so the dry soil underfoot wasn’t muddy.
Someone had called him just now, saying they got lost while camping and hid in a warehouse to avoid the rain, and their phone was running out of battery.
Before Lu Xunye could even speak, the phone cut off just as the person on the other end predicted.
When he called back, the phone was off.
Lu Xunye was very confused. If you get lost, shouldn’t you call your family, friends, or the police who are with you? Why call him?
The System, having been questioned the whole way, finally straightened its back: [Oh my, Host, you have so many questions. You won’t court the Protagonist Shou, and now you won’t even care about your friend?]
Friend, huh…
This word was a bit unfamiliar to Lu Xunye.
He habitually reached up to brush aside the overly long hair in front of his eyes but touched nothing; his fingertips met no resistance as they touched the bridge of his nose.
He was stunned for a moment, then mechanically lowered his hand.
Oh, right. He was no longer in that world. Everyone related to him was already dead.
Now, there was only Shen Yunqian and… friends.
The winter woods were filled with a heavy sense of desolation, with patches of trees growing densely or sparsely.
Occasionally, the sound of snapping dry branches echoed through the forest, accompanied by the crunch of Lu Xunye stepping on crushed leaves.
After bypassing a section of the road, the silhouette of a building appeared in his field of vision.
The dilapidated walls bore traces of scorching, and the peeling red gate was wide open. The endlessly dark entrance looked like the giant mouth of a dormant, hidden beast.
This place was the nearest warehouse Lu Xunye found on the navigation app based on the camping location the person mentioned.
Was it abandoned because of a fire?
Lu Xunye approached a few steps when he heard footsteps around the corner. Guided by some strange instinct, he took a step back and hid on the other side of the wall.
Through a window pane where a hole had been blasted by an old fire, unbearable curses drifted to his ears.
“Regret? If I’d known earlier, I would have shot you dead. Who do you think you are? You’d better kill me, otherwise, however you got out, I’ll make sure you go back in.”
“I haven’t even settled the score with you for drugging me personally yet, and here you are sucking up to another idiot. How can you be so cheap? Can you not live without doing that kind of thing!”
The person opposite him seemed to enjoy his scolding very much, not angry at all.
Instead, he pinched the young man’s jaw, his gaze ambiguous. “Keep cursing. You won’t be able to curse in a moment.”
The young man bit down hard on his hand.
After a shrill scream, the person shook him off. The man spat out the blood from the bite, turning his head to retch in disgust.
Suddenly, a dull pain hit his face, and his ears rang incessantly. The crisp sound of a slap seemed to echo in the air. The attacker held his hand and spat viciously.
“This Young Master giving you attention is giving you face. Do you really think a slut like you, who’s been slept with, can show off in front of this Young Master? Don’t you know how to call bodyguards? Call them! Let them come and hit me again.”
The young man turned his head. “Your mother…”
The unspoken vulgar curse was cut short by a dirty rag stuffed into his mouth. Even so, the person tied to the thick tire had red eyes and a fierce gaze, his expression swearing dirty words in place of speech.
The person who stuffed his mouth was shockingly Young Master Pang, whose face was still bruised and swollen like a pig’s head.
His greasy hand patted the young man’s face insultingly. “You were arrogant, weren’t you? Why aren’t you arrogant now?”
“Be quiet.” A cold voice came from behind. Young Master Pang was obviously afraid of this person; he silenced himself and busied himself behaving.
Lu Xunye stood on his tiptoes and looked toward the source of the voice. The person was far away, and with most of his face hidden in the shadows, identification was difficult.
The man said, “I can satisfy your request immediately, but are you sure Ji Yanchuan will come for this person?”
Young Master Pang cradled his hand, which was in so much pain it felt numb, and glanced at the bloody web between his thumb and forefinger.
Then he pointed at the young man on the ground, gritting his teeth. “I’m sure. Ji Yanchuan, that dog, got people to beat me up like this just for him.”
The man looked at the pig-headed face that suddenly leaned close to complain, raised an eyebrow, and frowned in disgust. “Stay away from me.”
Young Master Pang assumed the man just didn’t like strangers near him and tactfully retreated to the side. “Ji Yanchuan fell out with his family a long time ago because he didn’t want to inherit the family business. But he was actually willing to use the Ji family’s connections for the Feng kid, so he will definitely come.”
The man looked thoughtful and handed Feng Chengyu’s phone over. “Then call him. Tell him to come alone.”
He paused, the corners of his lips hooking up. “A life for a life.”
Seeing the other hesitate, his gaze slanted over casually, his voice dropping. “You wouldn’t want to know the consequences of lying to me.”
Young Master Pang took it with trembling limbs, turned around, and forcefully pried open Feng Chengyu’s clenched fingers to unlock it with a fingerprint, kicking him in the process.
During this, ensuring Feng Chengyu’s muffled groan from having his calf crushed could be clearly conveyed, Young Master Pang turned on the speakerphone and held the receiver close to Feng Chengyu’s throat.
A long silence.
“He’s just a bedwarmer who clings to me shamelessly. Whether he dies or not has nothing to do with me.”
The call ended with that low voice, devoid of any ripples of emotion.
The call was hung up.
“Interesting.”
The man walked step by step to Feng Chengyu, who was slumped on the ground.
With his fingertips, he pinched the phone that Young Master Pang tremblingly handed over and tossed it beside Feng Chengyu’s face like giving alms.
“Abandoned, huh.”
The phone screen shattered before his eyes. Suspecting the rising dust had blinded him, Feng Chengyu’s vision was shrouded, slowly becoming blurry.
The cavity of his mouth was stuffed so full by the rag that not a single gap remained; he couldn’t even make a sound.
“T-T-Then… I…”
Young Master Pang hadn’t expected Ji Yanchuan to be so heartless either. Meeting the man’s playful gaze, he almost knelt. “I really didn’t lie to you. He really got people to beat me up for Feng Chengyu.”
“How do you know the group of people who beat you were from the Ji family?”
“I…” Young Master Pang was tongue-tied. He had indeed heard Ji Yanchuan answer the call Feng Chengyu made that night.
According to the investigation, Ji Yanchuan had indeed contacted the Ji family. Afterward, Pang was beaten and visited by the police. The timeline matched perfectly. How could there be such a coincidence?
The man lowered his eyes, flipping through the latest file sent to him, and suddenly interjected, “The person you want to take revenge on seems to be from the Lu family.”
Young Master Pang’s face stiffened, and he denied it immediately. “Impossible. He’s just a bitch sent to my bed. I’ve met everyone from the Lu family.”
“What are you afraid of?” The man put away the phone, unconcerned. “If it’s the Lu family, then it’s the Lu family. Striking at the Lu family is much more interesting than the Ji family.”
Young Master Pang breathed a sigh of relief and attempted to change the subject from Ji Yanchuan’s refusal. “But will using a voice changer to fake Feng Chengyu’s voice really make him believe it? What if he calls the police or simply doesn’t come?”
The man pulled out the gun tucked at his waist and blew on the muzzle.
Young Master Pang was sweating profusely; he slightly regretted seeking out this person.
The man fingered the magazine. “That depends on whether your life is tough enough.”
“Shh,” he pressed a finger to his lips. “There’s a little mouse eavesdropping.”
A sharp gaze swept straight toward the window. Lu Xunye’s pupils quaked, and he instantly squatted down.
A moment later.
“Behave yourself, get in there!”
Lu Xunye was forcefully shoved into the warehouse. If he walked too slowly, a burly man behind him would push him.
The instinct to survive made him want to stop, but the person behind him wouldn’t allow it. Forced to stumble with every step, his walk was extremely difficult.
Suddenly, a foot kicked his back. Before the pain arrived, a strong sense of weightlessness hit him.
He almost flew out, crashing near the tires piled not far from Feng Chengyu.
His palms were scraped and bleeding, his pant legs soaked in blood. The crimson liquid dyed the ground red. Pain of varying intensity radiated from all over his body.
The man pretended to lecture the attacker: “Show some respect to my guest.”
“Yes.”
Lu Xunye spat on this body’s delicate skin; it made his sensitivity to pain much worse. But he could still endure it.
[System, do you have a plan? I entered this wolf’s den because your plot detection was inadequate and you egged me on.]
[…Situations outside the plot are not within the detection range,] the System resigned itself. [In order not to disrupt the world order, I have called the police for you. Just stall for a while; the police are expected to arrive within twenty minutes.]
“…” Lu Xunye was silent. [He has a gun. Losing my life takes one second. Twenty minutes… Could you be any later?]
The System thought for a moment.
Ding.
[Pain Shield activated. Deducting 50,000 Love Points. Current Love Points: 750,000.]
[Did I agree to activate it? This is your mistake, why deduct my points?]
Lu Xunye asked reflexively. After asking, he felt it was absurd; he planned not to return anyway, so saving points was useless.
This confusion didn’t last long; his attention was drawn by the sudden disappearance of pain: So awesome.
Ding.
[Returned deducted Love Points. Current Love Points: 750,000.]
The System felt guilty: [Please rest assured, Host, you will not die before your life value reaches zero.]
Seeing him lying motionless on the ground for a long time, Young Master Pang and the man looked at each other. “Did I kick him to death?”
As his words fell, Feng Chengyu also stared in Lu Xunye’s direction, his eyes red, struggling to whimper from his throat, though he couldn’t make a sound.
With the “Death Exemption Medallion,” Lu Xunye chose between playing dead and acting cool. He swiftly reached out and yanked the rag from Feng Chengyu’s mouth.
Feng Chengyu was still unable to extricate himself from the shock of Lu Xunye’s “resurrection.”
Feeling the foreign object in his mouth disappear, the delayed stench rushed in. He retched but couldn’t vomit anything up.
In Lu Xunye’s eyes, Feng Chengyu’s gaze looked like disgust. Noticing this, his eyes dodged, and he turned his face away helplessly.
Sensing his low mood, the System quickly comforted him: [You’re not ugly. Except for the scars on your original world’s body, this body’s appearance is exactly the same as yours.]
It was hard to believe that the 24-year-old Lu Xunye, who was satisfied with his appearance, had once lacked confidence.
During adolescence, Lu Xunye wasn’t cheerful. Being too thin made his skin sallow and his cheekbones prominent; he was merely “passable” looking. People at that age were vain and loved beauty.
Not to mention Lu Xunye’s family background; the dirty looks he suffered were no fewer than the Protagonist Shou.
The System finally realized why every time it tried to tease Lu Xunye about his looks by saying the opposite to win an argument, his reaction was so big, insisting on refuting it repeatedly.
So… was he still inferior at heart?
“Lu Xunye, you bastard!” Feng Chengyu naturally heard the conversation between the two men and knew Lu Xunye had foolishly run over because of a voice changer.
He hated iron for not becoming steel. “Aren’t you quite the fighter! Why didn’t you fight back just now? You just let that lackey kick you like that?!”
Lu Xunye was bewildered by the shouting: Are people in this world all so fierce?
The phrase “quite the fighter” surely couldn’t apply to him, right?
The man, who had remained emotionless, spoke up.
“I’ve heard a lot about you, Young Master Lu.”
Lu Xunye looked up, his fingers involuntarily tightening.
