Chapter 67: Press Conference Turmoil — Prank Chewing Gum part 1
Shen Yunqian reached out. “Hand it over. It belongs to my house.”
“This… it’s not necessarily whose just because of whose house it’s in.”
Lu Xunye backed away, gambling that the other hadn’t seen it. “You definitely don’t know what this is.”
Shen Yunqian truly hadn’t seen it clearly before Lu Xunye snatched it away. He retracted his hand and crossed his arms. “Do you know?”
He was truly shooting himself in the foot!
Lu Xunye felt regret.
This wasn’t something he had taken by mistake, and it certainly wasn’t something he had paid for!
He was in a bind and nearly ground his teeth to dust. The hand behind his back squeezed the small box until it was deformed. “It’s just a box of chewing gum. Your blood sugar hasn’t dropped yet; you can’t eat it.”
Shen Yunqian seemed to believe him and didn’t pry further. “Oh.”
The weight hanging over Lu Xunye’s heart dropped.
He wiped the non-existent sweat from his forehead. “I’ve used the computer. I didn’t look at your files. Anyway, it’s getting late. Go wash up first.”
When Shen Yunqian got up to walk around Lu Xunye, the other only showed him his front, with one hand pressed tightly against his back, holding the item out of sight.
He didn’t realize that the more he acted this way, the easier it was to pique someone’s curiosity.
Shen Yunqian suddenly asked, “Where did you put the plastic wrap?”
Lu Xunye was stumped. He saw the gauze wrapped around the other’s wrist and was immediately drawn to it, starting to think about where he had put the wrap.
He looked around, then looked down at the trash can, which was empty.
Then he stuffed the crushed box into his pocket and headed into the kitchen to find the wrap.
He turned the kitchen upside down but couldn’t find it. Finally, he lay flat on the floor with a flashlight, squinting one eye to look into the gap under the dishwasher.
When Shen Yunqian came in, the other was kneeling on the floor, twisting his head like a turtle with a heavy shell. It was quite an ungraceful sight.
He frowned. “What are you doing?”
“I’m checking if it rolled onto the floor.”
Once Lu Xunye finished his check, he scrambled up from the floor.
“I can’t remember where I put it. How about I go to the convenience store and buy a new roll now?”
He pocketed his phone and was about to head out. As he brushed past Shen Yunqian, he was caught off guard when the other pulled something out of his pocket.
Lu Xunye froze and felt his deflated jacket pocket.
A voice sounded from behind: “Why were you so nervous about this?”
Lu Xunye’s whole body went stiff. He held his breath and turned around mechanically, only to see Shen Yunqian pulling several strips of… chewing gum out of that wrinkled box?
“Huh?”
In disbelief, he walked over and took the items from the other. He peeled back the wrapper and sniffed it. Watermelon flavor.
Refusing to believe it, he licked it with his tongue. He looked up blankly to meet Shen Yunqian’s gaze and blinked. “It’s sweet.”
“Chewing gum?” He looked at the youth, wondering if he were hallucinating.
“What else did you think it was?”
Shen Yunqian gripped the box in his hand and also sensed something was off. He started to unfold the box.
“This box is quite strange—”
“No, no, no! I just thought it was chewing gum.”
Lu Xunye snatched the crumpled blue box from his hand and even made a counter-accusation. “I told you I was afraid of your high blood sugar, but you wouldn’t believe me.”
After he hastily fled the kitchen, Shen Yunqian stared at his back, lost in thought.
He then pulled that roll of plastic wrap out of the refrigerator—the only place Lu Xunye had skipped in his search.
…
Lu Xunye rubbed his head, still feeling something wasn’t right the more he thought about it. He looked toward the trash can and picked out that crumpled paper box.
He looked it over for a long time and finally found a line of small text on the back: Prank Chewing Gum (Watermelon Flavor).
Lu Xunye: “…”
Damn it, what is a legitimate supermarket doing selling this kind of thing!
Lu Xunye covered his head in despair, seeking comfort from the System. 【Did I look like an idiot just now?】
The System didn’t know what to say and could only tell the truth. 【It seems you already looked like an idiot when you frantically shouted that you were ‘useless.’】
Lu Xunye: “…Shut up.”
Ding.
His phone screen lit up with a new message.
——Young Master, I am Assistant Liu. The Family Head has instructed me to inform you that a new product launch will be held at Lu Group Headquarters at 9:00 AM on February 10th.
That evening, the Family Head will host guests at the Lu family residence to announce your identity. Please be prepared, Young Master. Someone will be sent to pick you up in advance.
Additionally, due to your previous injury, the matter of you taking over the Second Young Master’s position was postponed. The Family Head has already inquired with the hospital and confirmed your health is no longer an issue.
Please report to headquarters for duty at the latest one day after the press conference. Someone will teach you what to do.
Lu Xunye was currently irritated and replied without thinking.
——Inquired with the hospital? That hospital isn’t up to much, leaking patient privacy like that. Help me report them.
The reply came quickly.
——Don’t worry, Young Master. The hospital is an investment of the Lu Group. They won’t share your condition with anyone other than the Family Head.
Lu Xunye: “…”
See? I told you Shen Qizhao was sent by Lu Feng last time.
System: 【So, is the Host still going back to sleep here tonight?】
Good question.
Lu Xunye thought about it and decided he might as well.
He cleaned the guest room. As he headed out, he heard the sound of running water from the bathroom.
His eyes lit up. He pressed his face against the door and “shouted” in a squeezed voice: “I’m out of clean clothes. I’m going back to grab some first.”
With that, he clapped his hands and slipped away in a good mood.
The System flew beside him, offering a cautious warning.
【Is this really okay? Didn’t you just say you were so in love you couldn’t help yourself?】 And now you’re leaving?
Lu Xunye’s pace was light. 【I don’t care. If I stay any longer, I’ll lose all my dignity.】
Before, it was Shen Yunqian who was always unlucky when he met Lu Xunye. Now the tables had turned. Karma really is something.
Lu Xunye turned the doorknob happily. The moment the door opened, he was already prepared to embrace freedom. But when the door swung fully open, he froze.
He looked blankly at the youth outside the door. His hand didn’t release the doorknob. He turned back toward the bathroom inside the apartment, then turned back, confirming he was indeed inside.
He spoke with a guilty conscience: “Y-you weren’t in the shower?”
“I was about to. I’m letting the hot water run.” Shen Yunqian’s expression was gentle. “Where are you going?”
Lu Xunye felt a chill on his back. “Oh, I took my change of clothes back last time. I thought you were in the shower just now, so I told you at the door.”
His gaze dropped to the clothes in the other’s hands. He had a preposterous guess. “These are?”
“I went to get some clothes for you.”
Shen Yunqian didn’t know if he doubted the excuse. He deliberately emphasized his voice. “I was afraid my ‘body pillow’ would have low self-esteem.”
He paused and let out a soft laugh. “Wear more.”
The “body pillow” himself, Lu Xunye, had a pile of clothes dumped into his arms. His head spun as he moved out of the way. With a heart as dead as ash, he closed the door. Several pairs of underwear were visible among the clothes.
“…”
Lu Xunye thought: Today must be some kind of World Misfortune Day.
To make his “bold declaration” more convincing, Lu Xunye was forced to act as a body pillow for over a week.
Of course, being as petty as he was, Lu Xunye found a more high-sounding reason. Using the doctor’s orders to help Shen Yunqian exercise, he dragged the other downstairs every morning at 5:00 AM for a five-kilometer run.
If Shen Yunqian tried to sleep in, Lu Xunye would go and report him to his master, Guo Yi, and then change the morning run to a night run.
The time for the five-kilometer run gradually decreased from one hour to 35 minutes.
