Chapter 74: Questioning Injustice â “I’ll Break Your Legs if You Aren’t Obedient”
Nursing Home.
“I can’t even remember your face clearly. Twenty-one years have passed; you’ve grown old.”
The young man sat on the sofa by the window, facing the pale and weak person on the bed. He closed his eyes, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper.
“Since you died, why didn’t you stay dead? Why did you have to reappear?”
Si Jingyan unconsciously twisted the ring on his index finger, his tone devoid of emotion.
The person wounded by his vicious words was equally devoid of emotional fluctuations. He merely cast a calm glance at the restless young man with closed eyes and said indifferently:
“I have no utility value to you. You might as well pretend this never happened and do what you should be doing.”
Si Jingyanâs hand playing with the ring paused. “You’re wrong.”
His tone was cold. He slowly opened his eyes and sneered, “So many people are watching me, watching the Si family. Only by keeping you under my control first can I ensure you won’t pose any threat to the Si family.”
He met the other man’s meaningful gaze; it would be a lie to say he didn’t care at all.
Resentment and a sense of grievance that Si Jingyan himself hadn’t noticed began to sprout and spread in his heart.
He was dazed for a second before immediately feeling ashamed of his thoughts. The words he spoke were cold and heartless: “What? Do you think I’m cold-blooded? Are you disappointed in me?”
“I wouldn’t say disappointed.”
Si Zheng looked away. “I just suddenly realized you’ve grown up.”
“Why wouldn’t you say so!”
Si Jingyan could no longer maintain his facade of calm. He lunged forward without any regard for his image, viciously grabbing the man’s collar. His expression was distorted. “It’s because you’ve never cared about me! You hate me so much, so why did you even have me! Why!”
“Did you ever love me or my mother? Do you know how we lived?! Why did you fake your death? Why didn’t you show up even when my mother was murdered!”
“Didn’t you want to stay dead? Why did you reappear? Why did you save someone from the Lu family! Are you still lingering over Jiang Qingran? So even his brother’s grandson is worth you risking your life to save, but my mother and I aren’t worth a single glance from you, is that it!”
It was as if Si Jingyan wanted to vent all the injustice he had endured since childhood. He roared one question after another.
“Don’t forget! Jiang Qingran was the one who jumped off a cliff in despair back then. You were the one who forced her! So what if you saved someone from the Lu family! Sheâs already a dead person!”
“Shut up!”
The previously calm middle-aged man now had bloodshot eyes, his chest heaving violently. He swung a slap, which Si Jingyan easily caught in mid-air.
Si Jingyan gripped the hand that had tried to hit his face, laughing out loud for no reason. “What right do you have to hit me? Based on your ridiculous status as my father?”
After his anger passed, Si Jingyan fell into a state of confusion. His gaze, longing for an answer, fell upon Si Zheng.
“Why is every one of you biased toward Lu Xunye? Jian Luoqing is, Shen Yunqian is, and now even you are. You make it seem like I’m some heinous sinner, when I’m the one who knew you all first!”
“Am I wrong?” He was puzzled. “Is it my own fault, so you all have to help an outsider?”
Even so, there was no pity for him in Si Zheng’s eyes. “Your motherâs influence on you is too deep.”
“You don’t deserve to mention her!”
Si Jingyan threw his hand aside and calmed down. He stood up slowly, smoothed his wrinkled clothes, and curled his lips into a playful smile.
“But it doesn’t matter anymore.”
He casually pulled something from his pocket. Observing Si Zheng’s face suddenly turn pale, he masked the triumphant smile in his eyes.
He feigned regret, “Pity. You probably won’t be seeing him again after this.”
Si Zheng ignored the injury on his back and reached out to grab it. “What did you do to him?!”
Si Jingyan sidestepped him, looking coldly at the man who had fallen off the bed in a pathetic heap.
As if bestowing a favor, he tossed the object in his hand onto the man like trash. He mocked, “You really do care about him. Someone who didn’t know better would think he’s the one who’s your son.”
Si Zheng was breakng out in a cold sweat from the pain, yet he said nothing, carefully picking up the object. It was a pink diamond bracelet.
He looked up at the young man looking down at him and asked in a trembling voice, “How did this end up with you? What did you do to him? Answer me!”
The atmosphere between the two, which had finally found some stability, instantly became like a drawn bow. They glared at each other, neither willing to back down.
After a long time, Si Jingyan broke the silence first: “Heâs dead.”
In an instant, Si Zheng’s blood pressure surged. His vision went black, and he nearly fainted.
Just then, the door to the room opened. A doctor saw the patient fallen in a mess on the floor with the IV needle tossed aside. He let out a cry of alarm and instinctively rushed forward to help.
He had just bent down when he caught a glimpse of the shadow cast by the bedside.
In the next second, the doctor straightened his back without a trace, holding the medication in his hands. He pretended nothing had happened and looked toward the young man standing there like a lamppost.
Si Jingyan said nothing, merely tilted his chin up and moved out of the way.
Taking this as permission, the doctor hurriedly helped Si Zheng back onto the bed.
“He is your responsibility from now on.”
Hearing this, the doctor was unsure of the attitude of this boss behind the scenes and didn’t dare ask more. He merely said, “Rest assured, Si-zong.”
Seeing Si Jingyan leave, the doctor let out a long sigh of relief and re-inserted the IV for Si Zheng.
He witnessed the middle-aged man, whose spirit had withered, stroking the unremarkable bracelet like a treasure. He didn’t know what the man saw, but light returned to his eyes.
Outside the nursing home, inside a car.
A handsome young man in the driver’s seat gripped the steering wheel and glanced at the rearview mirror. “Si-zong, are we leaving?”
Was there something special about that bracelet? Si Jingyan had only learned that Si Zheng had previously commissioned someone to outbid Lu Xunye for it.
He had hurriedly had someone create an identical one based on the auction samples to trick Si Zheng.
However, seeing the reaction he had anticipated, he wasn’t very happy.
Si Jingyan stared in the direction of the nursing home for a long time, unable to calm down.
After a while, he turned his head back and pursed his lips. “Have you still not found out who took Lu Xunye?”
Ji Huaixu said truthfully, “No. It’s as if he vanished into thin air. We can’t find anything. We asked witnesses, and they said a man claiming to be Lu Xunyeâs family took him.”
He seemed to anticipate what Si Jingyan would ask next and added proactively, “It shouldn’t be the Lu family. Lu Feng is investigating the whereabouts of the person in the nursing home.”
Si Jingyan asked, almost as if to himself, “Am I really that disliked?”
Ji Huaixu: “…As long as you’re happy.”
He asked at an inopportune time, “Are you still going to see Shen-xiansheng? He should still be at the hospital.”
He was the type of person who knew his boundaries.
Normally, Ji Huaixu would never ask such an inappropriate personal question.
But right now, as if afraid the fire wasn’t burning bright enough, he was secretly fanning the flames.
For someone like him, an occasional overstep wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
Sure enough, Si Jingyan didn’t think much of it. He hesitated. “Will he… want to see me?”
Since their last unpleasant parting, he had swallowed his pride and gone to see him several times, but he had been turned away every time. Being mentioned so suddenly, he felt uncertain and craved validation.
Ji Huaixuâs words were like a knife: “Probably… not.”
He seemed to have just remembered something.
“I just remembered, you have a board meeting this afternoon. If you don’t go, I’m afraid the shareholders will be even more dissatisfied.”
ââââ
“Meow~”
Lu Xunye saw the white cat’s tail flash at the corner. He held his breath, pressed himself against the wall, and only relaxed when the sound drifted away.
He balanced on one foot, hopping along the wall as he surveyed the residence.
It was a small, antique-style villa. The grounds weren’t large, but perhaps because it was spring, the flowers in the garden were blooming exceptionally well.
When he fell from the building, his adrenaline had surged, and his brain was abnormally excited. Later, he had passed out so quickly that he ignored the odd sensation in his foot.
Although it wasn’t broken, it throbbed with pain if he applied even a little force. Fu-yi told him to stay in bed and rest, but he hadn’t expected the rescued Lu Xunye, now in a strange environment, to stay put.
Fu-yi was the woman who claimed to be his motherâs old acquaintance, the owner of this house, and the person who had brought him back from the fire.
His first impression of her was that of a kind and amiable elder. From her, he had learned some things about his mother.
Lu Xunye lacked the original owner’s memories and couldn’t distinguish if her words were true or false.
The sun was setting. The evening glow gilded the vibrant garden in an amber hue.
A womanâs sharp reprimand broke the silence.
“You’re all useless! How did you watch him? You didn’t even notice when someone was plotting against you!”
Having accidentally overheard her call, Lu Xunye was afraid of hearing personal matters that weren’t meant for outsiders. He slowly lowered his raised foot and decided to walk back slowly, enduring the pain.
After all, the sound of hopping on one foot was indeed quite loud.
“Dispose of them.”
A faint sigh drifted from a distance.
Lu Xunye thought to himself that he had indeed overheard a secret, and it didn’t sound like anything good.
To his surprise, her next sentence froze him in place.
“And that Shen Yunqianâhe can’t be kept around anymore.”
Lu Xunyeâs eyes widened in shock.
“Whoâs there!” The woman turned back alertly. The corridor was empty.
Lu Xunye hid behind a pillar, closing his eyes in despair as he heard the approaching footsteps. He was out of options.
“Meow~”
The woman relaxed and picked up the cat, scolding it gently, “Why are you running around? If you don’t start being obedient, I’ll break your legs.”
The white cat didn’t understand. It enjoyed being petted, nudging the womanâs neck with its head. “Meow~”
Lu Xunye took advantage of the opening and slipped away. He looked back every few steps to make sure no one was chasing him, having long forgotten the injury on his leg.
Seeing the front gate within reach, Lu Xunye felt an irrepressible excitement and tension. He didn’t even understand why.
Suddenly, a person appeared and blocked his path.
The man’s tone was respectful, yet contained an undetectable threat: “Where are you going, Lu-xiansheng? My boss said you should rest well. You should go back. If you need anything, just tell us.”
Lu Xunye was equally unyielding. “Move. I’ll explain to Fu-yi.”
“Whatâs wrong, Xiao Lu?”
A gentle female voice sounded from behind him.
Lu Xunye was startled. He was just about to find a reason to bluff his way through when the bodyguard who blocked him sold him out.
“Lu-xiansheng wants to leave.”
“Why are you in such a hurry to go?”
Fu-yiâs concerned gaze fell on his left leg. “Is your leg better?”
“If Auntie did something wrong, tell me. You know how hard it was for me to find you. Your mother has passed away; I can’t bear to see you suffering and all alone.”
“Orâdid you hear someoneâs instigation?”
She shot a half-smiling glance at the bodyguard, who immediately lowered his head, trying to shrink his presence.
Although she was smiling, there was no warmth in her eyes.
Lu Xunye keenly saw a trace of coldness in her worried gaze.
He couldn’t be blamed for overthinking; the way she casually talked about “disposing” of someone made it impossible not to.
He immediately changed what he was going to say: “It’s not better. Iâm just bored and wanted to go out for some fresh air.”
Fu-yiâs smile deepened. “You child, why run around when your injury isn’t healed? Once you’re better, Auntie won’t care where you go. Now, come back with me.”
Fu-yi supported his arm. Lu Xunye felt a chill on his back. He took a quick look toward the gate; there were likely even more bodyguards. He would definitely lose in a real fight.
Moreover, what if he was overthinking? If “appearance is a reflection of the heart,” then Fu-yiâs heart could only be summarized in one word: “kind.”
Lu Xunye followed obediently for a few steps before pausing. He didn’t miss the flicker of impatience in her eyes when she looked up. His suspicion was confirmed even more.
He acted as if he hadn’t noticed, looking troubled. “But my documents and phone were burned in the fire. I should go re-apply for my documents first.”
