“Don’t fall into the trap of consumerism just because you have money now. Those experts saying clothes need to be changed every three months, toothbrushes every three monthsâit’s all a lie.”
“Thatâs just an excuse for poor product quality, deliberately making you consume more.”
Ji Chen was used to Tang Xingyeâs occasional lectures. He nodded as if being taught, no longer dwelling on the cup, and instead threw out the real bait. “I bought you a new bookcase. The dorm is too small to fit it.”
“I’ve found all the books from the list you gave me last time. They are all hardcover collector’s editions, just enough to fill the new bookcase.”
This sentence accurately hit Tang Xingyeâs weakness. He immediately outlined the picture in his mind: a floor-to-ceiling bookcase, packed full of all the books he liked, where he could pull one out anytime and curl up in a comfortable chair until dawn.
Ji Chen keenly perceived his wavering and continued to up the ante, describing the comfort of curling up on the sofa reading on a rainy day, while stuffing a key into Tang Xingyeâs hand.
“How about moving out of the dorm next semester? I bought a suitable apartment nearby. It’s very close, convenient for class later.”
Before Tang Xingye could reply, Lu Zhi appeared at the door at some point, his voice cold: “Ji Chen, are you trying to break the contract?”
Lin Mo had long anticipated this result.
Ji Chen showed no embarrassment at being caught. He wasn’t someone who would yield just by listening to reason. No Alpha could accept sharing, let alone Alphas with status and face like them.
Whether one gets chosen depends on one’s own ability. He didn’t look at Lu Zhi, waiting for Tang Xingyeâs answer.
Tang Xingye frowned, not very happy. “However convenient it is, can it be more convenient than the dorm? Two steps and I’m at the teaching building.”
But he still accepted the key. “Thanks.”
If Ji Chen was willing to give, he would accept.
Finals were approaching, and the number of people in Tang Xingyeâs study room increased.
Pei Lian sat on Tang Xingyeâs left, Lin Mo on the right. Opposite them sat Lu Zhi, forcing a smile, while Ji Chen rested his cheek lazily on the heel of his palm, his eyes resting on Tang Xingye with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile.
The originally spacious study room felt a bit cramped with several Alphas squeezed in, pheromones wrestling secretly in the silence.
Lin Mo seemed puzzled by Ji Chenâs overly direct gaze. “If you’re not reading, what are you doing here?” His tone was flat, but the content hit the nail on the head.
Tang Xingye frowned slightly at Ji Chen, slightly disapproving.
Meeting Tang Xingyeâs gaze, Ji Chen didn’t restrain himself but smiled even more meaningfully. He put down the hand propping his face, leaned forward slightly, his voice lowered with a lazy provocation. His gaze swept over Lin Mo and Lu Zhi, adding pointedly, “I’m seeing which blind person keeps thinking about disturbing your reading.”
These words instantly turned the undercurrents into open warfare.
Tang Xingye was choked by these direct and provocative words. To divert the fire, he mentioned the only person not present. “Why isn’t Zhou Lin here?”
The air was quiet for a moment.
Ji Chen gave a light chuckle, breaking the silence first. He leaned back in his chair, looking at Lin Mo, snorting meaningfully. “Probably still recuperating in the hospital ward. Someone’s good deed, I suppose.”
“You contributed greatly too.” Lin Mo was expressionless, selling Ji Chen out without hesitation.
Lu Zhi still understood the movements of his former good “brother,” saying lightly, “He’s fine. Something happened at the company, he’s still busy. He’ll be back for finals.”
Immediately, as if sensing something, he turned his gaze to Tang Xingye. “You miss him?”
As soon as these words fell, everyone’s eyes landed on Tang Xingye.
Facing their gazes, Tang Xingye shook his head calmly. It was impossible for him to actively care about Zhou Lin. His energy was limited. These people were always holding things back; rather than wondering what this group of lunatics was thinking all day, he might as well think about the scholarship.
Pei Lian didn’t participate in their tit-for-tat but looked at Tang Xingye, his voice very soft. “In two days, I’ll move into your dorm.”
“Huh?”
Tang Xingye was confused about when this happened. He remembered there were no empty spots in the dorm. If he had to say, there was still that Beta roommate who occupied a bed but never appeared.
Lin Mo reacted quickly, knowing that Pei Lian saying this meant he had already sorted out the procedures. “Haven’t you always lived off-campus? Suddenly living in a dorm, you won’t be used to it.”
Pei Lian smiled gently at him. “Didn’t you always hate Xingye? You used to wash your hands even after touching him. Now you’re so close, what does that mean?”
Lin Moâs face turned black instantly. He looked at Tang Xingye, who had lowered his head to read again. Obviously, quarreling now was unwise. Scrutinizing Pei Lianâs similar face, he sneered, “That’s the only trick you have.”
Pei Lian wasn’t angered in the slightest. He even raised his hand, fingertips lightly touching his own cheek, his eyes revealing a naive yet cruel triumph. “Some people can’t even envy this point.”
Tang Xingye indifferently blocked out the sound of their talking, immersed in knowledge. The human voices in his ear occasionally reminded him of the experience of reading in a busy market when he was a child.
His review speed was fast. The knowledge inside had almost become his nerve endings; seeing keywords could awaken memories.
The Alphas were creating friction and getting angry. Tang Xingye told them to get lost to the training room and fight to solve it.
When Tang Xingye returned to the dorm at night, he found only Pei Lian there; the others were gone.
Pei Lian came over to help him with his bag. Tang Xingye was a bit concerned about the others’ movements but quickly put it behind him. His gaze fell on the bed in the dorm that was originally empty but now neatly made, looking a bit surprised.
“You moved in so fast?”
“Don’t you want to see me? Then I can leave right now.” As soon as the words fell, Pei Lianâs eyes were instantly covered with a layer of mist. He lowered his head slightly, the tall Alpha shrinking his shoulders, his voice becoming choked with sobs, full of grievance, looking quite pitiful.
Tang Xingyeâs heart jumped. This crying angle was too like Wen Ze.
“Alright, stop looking like you’re crying all the time. I didn’t say I wouldn’t let you live here.” To cover up his compromise, Tang Xingyeâs tone was a bit stiff. After speaking, he suddenly felt his teeth ache; these words were so familiar.
Pei Lian stopped sobbing instantly, as if equipped with a switch. A pure and satisfied smile bloomed on his face as he asked, pushing his luck, “Then can I sleep with you tonight?”
Pei Lian knew clearly that a trick didn’t need to be new, just effective. With so many people coveting Tang Xingye, his biggest competitive advantage was this face and identity. Not using an advantage would make him a true fool.
“You have your own bed. Go sleep on your bed.”
Pei Lian leaned over relentlessly, sticking to Tang Xingye, his high nose bridge rubbing against Tang Xingyeâs gland.
“Are you a dog? Don’t rub randomly.”
Tang Xingye pushed against Pei Lian with his hand.
A Beta’s gland wouldn’t overflow with pheromones, but it had the same structure as an Omega’s, full of nerves and equally sensitive.
The tip of the nose pressed against that small gland, making the skin tremble. Tang Xingyeâs breathing became disordered instantly, waist going numb. His long eyelashes trembled ceaselessly like frightened butterfly wings, face flushing pink. “No rubbing…”
Pei Lian didn’t stop but pushed further, gently kissing that sensitive gland with his lips while mumbling an apology that held no sincerity whatsoever.
Tang Xingye was angry and annoyed, but the touched area surged with fine electric currents, bringing waves of comfort.
Pei Lian half-knelt, holding Tang Xingyeâs knees, looking up. His eyes floated with water, like a mist-covered lake, carrying pure desire.
“Brother, I’ll be your puppy tonight, okay?”
