Chapter 22
At eight o’clock in the evening, the sky had completely darkened.
Luo Wenshu sprayed some floral water on Luo Xingyu and then took him out.
The Ghost Gate opened inside the room. They entered, traveled through the mist, and when they emerged, they were at Xingwang Middle School in Shuiyang Town.
This was the school Zhang Hui attended.
Specifically, they were in the shadows between the girls’ dormitory building and the public restroom building.
“Wait here for me for a bit,” Luo Wenshu said to Luo Xingyu.
Even though he was only five years old and had just finished the middle class of kindergarten, a boy was still a boy, and entering the girls’ restroom was out of the question.
Since school wouldn’t officially start for a few more days, the campus was nearly empty. Looking around, it was mostly dark, with lights visible only from the security room and the public restroom building.
Luo Wenshu walked in unhurriedly, rounded the partition wall, and entered the stall where Zhang Hui had been squatting.
Drip, drip, drip… The sound of dripping water was relentless.
The sensor light inside the restroom had gone out, leaving only the faint, dim white light filtering in from outside.
Step… step… step…
Footsteps suddenly echoed, as if someone had walked in from outside, circled the restroom once, and finally stopped outside the door of Luo Wenshu’s stall.
Luo Wenshu remained silent. The thing outside didn’t move either; they were in a standoff separated by a single door.
The lights in the restroom had been out for a while. The temperature, which had been fairly normal, suddenly dropped significantly, bringing a distinct chill.
Trying to scare me?
Luo Wenshu thought for a moment, then curled her fingers and gently knocked on the stall door. She asked calmly, “Classmate, do you have any tissue?”
No response.
Or rather, the response she got was the sound of fingernails scraping against the door panel.
Luo Wenshu thought to herself, Doesn’t this thing care about hygiene?
But on second thought, anything running into a restroom probably wasn’t too particular anyway.
Soon, she saw several fingers slowly reaching in through the gap beneath the stall door.
The Human Realm belongs to humans.
In this world, supernatural beings might seem fierce and terrifying, but they are actually bound by countless rules—unseen and untouchable, yet undeniably real.
Doors are one of them.
When Zhang Hui had looked through this very door and seen the thing outside, it had remained standing there without entering. Not because it didn’t want to, but because it couldn’t.
Unless a spirit’s power reaches a certain level, its influence on the physical world is limited.
Of course, they can strengthen their intrusion into reality by influencing humans.
Luo Wenshu’s question just now could be interpreted as a form of permission. With permission, the restrictions of the “door” are correspondingly lessened.
The fingers were withered, long and thin, with sharp nails and pale, greenish skin. Poking a piece of filthy paper produced from who-knows-where, the hand reached straight for Luo Wenshu’s feet.
Just as it was about to touch her, Luo Wenshu lifted her foot.
The hand paused, seemingly surprised by this development.
Luo Wenshu didn’t care what it was thinking. She stomped down hard with her raised foot and ground it heavily a few times.
Amidst the dripping water, there seemed to be the sound of cracking bones.
Luo Wenshu lifted her foot, and the hand retracted with a speed so fast it was almost a blur.
The sound of nails scratching the door resumed, sounding frantic and manic. The rage of the thing outside was palpable.
Luo Wenshu spoke again, “Classmate, are you still there? I think I stepped on something just now. Can you help me take a look?”
This was an even more explicit invitation.
As soon as her voice fell, she heard a sinister voice from outside, sounding neither male nor female.
“Okay~~~”
The temperature in the restroom dropped even further. A gust of wind blew in from outside, passing the partition wall and slamming against the stall door.
Luo Wenshu watched as the plastic latch she had engaged slowly turned, moving toward the unlock position.
The wind grew stronger, and the stall door slowly opened with a strange, eerie creak.
Luo Wenshu concentrated spiritual energy at her fingertips and quickly drew a talisman in the air.
“I… will… help… you…” Along with that sinister voice, the door opened completely.
Luo Wenshu’s talisman was ready, and she struck it directly toward the doorway.
“Ah—!!!” A miserable, piercing scream erupted from the first-floor girls’ restroom, echoing throughout the girls’ dormitory area.
The sensor lights in the restrooms on both floors lit up instantly.
Far away in the security room at the school gate, the elderly guard, wearing a white tank top washed so many times it had lost its shape and shorts, vaguely heard a noise and lifted his eyelids.
The small fan whirred. Thinking that the students wouldn’t be back for a few days, the old man quickly closed his eyes and went back to sleep, too lazy to even take a look.
He just assumed it was stray dogs barking outside.
After capturing the filthy thing in the girls’ restroom, Luo Wenshu walked out, picked up Luo Xingyu who was waiting outside, passed through the adjacent wall, and entered the desolate mountain forest behind the school.
“Mom, what is this?” Luo Xingyu looked curiously at the thing Luo Wenshu was dragging behind her.
Yes, dragging.
The talisman drawn with spiritual energy had transformed into simple lines forming a rope. One end was held in Luo Wenshu’s hand, while the other passed through the two eye sockets of the spirit’s body and was tied in a knot. She dragged the guy along just like that.
“A filthy thing.” Luo Wenshu made no attempt to hide her disgust. “Even though supernatural beings in the mortal world aren’t usually fastidious, many of them would still be disgusted by something that likes to burrow into restrooms.”
The thing Luo Wenshu had caught wore black clothes and pants. Its spirit hair was very long and messy, covering half its face so its features were obscured. Even its shoes were black; only the shoelaces were white.
In summer, the mountain vegetation was lush, and the sounds of birds and insects rose and fell incessantly.
Mosquitoes buzzed all around, flapping their wings, but deterred by the resentment, they couldn’t get close and circled anxiously.
Luo Wenshu flipped her palm, and the talisman rope tightened. The spirit on the other end rolled on the ground in agony, letting out screams of extreme pain.
“Shut up.” Luo Wenshu’s voice was cold.
The spirit immediately fell silent, its body still curled up on the ground like a dog.
No, dogs are much cuter than him.
“How did you die?” Luo Wenshu asked.
Several seconds passed after she spoke without a reply. Luo Wenshu frowned and tightened the rope in her hand again.
Another burst of miserable screams followed, and the spirit begged tremblingly, “Don’t… don’t, I’ll talk, I’ll talk!”
This spirit looked short and scrawny, with only his feet being somewhat large. In life, he had been a high school student, wearing glasses, with bangs just within the length permitted by the school.
Usually, he seemed quiet and reticent, with average grades that didn’t fluctuate much. He had almost no presence.
But secretly, he was a voyeur.
High school girls were already well-developed. In earlier years, the school had no strict dress code. In summer, many wore short sleeves, hot pants, or skirts, looking youthful and lively, which had nothing to do with being revealing.
But in the shadows, a pair of dirty eyes was always watching.
Gradually, this guy was no longer satisfied with just peeping. He bought a wig and a skirt, hiding them in a hole in the corner behind the restroom wall. After evening self-study, he would sneakily change into them and mix into the girls’ restroom under the dim light.
There were few people at night, so he didn’t succeed every time.
But he had succeeded a few times.
Then one night, a girl in the stall next to him had an upset stomach and didn’t have any tissues, so she asked if he had any.
He didn’t dare make a sound.
The girl kept pleading for help, asking him to go buy some, even passing money over.
He couldn’t pretend to be dead anymore, so he carefully handed over some tissues.
His hands were unsightly—ugly, even. Two fingers were wrapped in gauze from an accidental burn earlier.
And the person squatting next door happened to be his classmate.
That was why he hadn’t dared to speak at first.
After taking the tissues, the girl left quickly.
He listened to the footsteps fading away, and the frantically beating heart in his chest gradually calmed down.
It was getting very late, and he prepared to head back.
However, just as he opened the door to leave, a commotion came from outside.
“He’s right in there!”
“I saw it clearly; it’s him! His hand is wrapped in gauze!”
It was the girl who had left earlier. She had returned, bringing the dorm matron, the school security guard, and two girls from her dorm. They marched in angrily, heading straight for the stall where he was hiding.
That night, he was dragged out of the girls’ restroom by the security guard. At some point, a crowd had gathered outside to watch the spectacle.
He tried hard to hide his face, but people around him were already shouting his name.
He couldn’t stay at that school anymore, so he hastily transferred to a middle school in town.
After transferring, he restrained himself for a while, but soon relapsed.
This time, he was more careful and disguised himself better, so he wasn’t discovered for a long time.
Gradually unsatisfied with this kind of peeping, he later accidentally discovered a household outside the school with a very rudimentary bathroom. He got wicked ideas and went to stake it out at night to peep.
What he didn’t know was that the family’s bathroom was connected to the toilet—a dry toilet with a large cesspit.
While peeping, unfamiliar with the terrain, he stepped on empty air and fell into the cesspit, never to climb out again.
The school soon realized he was missing and called his parents. Both sides searched everywhere but couldn’t find him.
Some time later, when that family scooped manure water from the pit to water their vegetable field, they discovered his body.
The local police worked overtime for several days. Finally, combining the evidence with his history of being forced to transfer due to voyeurism, they concluded it was an accidental death.
Luo Wenshu: “…”
She thought he was just a filthy thing that liked to burrow into restrooms, but she didn’t expect he actually died in a cesspit!
She instantly let go of the talisman rope wrapped around her hand.
Disgusting!
Absolutely disgusting!
Seeing this, the spirit’s first reaction was to seize the opportunity to escape.
And he did exactly that.
Then, the talisman rope wrapped around his entire body, tightening continuously. Immense pain eroded every part of his soul. He screamed miserably, unable even to roll on the ground.
Luo Xingyu felt as if a stench was emanating from around the spirit, and he silently moved a few steps away.
Luo Wenshu frowned, a look of revulsion on her face. “You like burrowing into toilets to peep so much, right? Then I’ll send you back to the cesspit to stay a while longer.”
Afterward, Luo Wenshu took Luo Xingyu around the town, found a manure pit next to a pigsty, tied the spirit up, and threw him in.
Anyway, this guy had been wandering outside for a long time. There was no rush to send him to the Netherworld. Let him soak in the manure pit for a while first. By the time he arrived, even the little ghosts of the Netherworld would be disgusted and would throw him into a boiling cauldron to scrub him countless times to get rid of the smell.
He was in for a treat!
