Chapter 8
Luo Wenshu hadn’t expected Li Yufen and her husband to seek her out for this.
Last night, she had saved Fang Peng only to repay a debt of gratitude owed by the original owner. She hadn’t expected any reward, and therefore hadn’t revealed her unusual abilities, making the whole event seem like a coincidence.
Yet, in a roundabout way, the couple had found out.
Since that was the case, Luo Wenshu frankly admitted, “Brother Fang, Sister Yufen, don’t worry. I’ll take care of Pengpeng’s situation.”
Even if the couple hadn’t come to her, Luo Wenshu would have handled the aftermath properly.
Upon hearing this, Li Yufen’s eyes widened in surprise and delight. “Little Luo, you really… Why didn’t you ever mention this before?”
Fang Dahao was also curious.
Although he didn’t believe in these things, he could still imagine that masters with genuine abilities usually commanded high fees and likely didn’t have financial worries.
But when Luo Wenshu had just moved in, she had been rather impoverished, and her financial situation hadn’t seemed to improve much in the past two years.
Luo Wenshu smiled, “Xiaoyu was still young before, and I just wanted a stable life.”
While this was a makeshift excuse, it was undeniably reasonable.
Li Yufen and her husband accepted this explanation without further questioning, instead focusing on how to handle Fang Peng’s situation.
“Little Luo, Pengpeng really… was he possessed by a spirit?” Li Yufen asked.
Luo Wenshu nodded. “Yes, just as Pengpeng told you, he was targeted by a little water ghost who drowned, wearing a pink dress.”
And it was currently trapped in an old refrigerator on the rooftop of the neighboring building.
However, Luo Wenshu didn’t mention the last part; it was unnecessary, and mentioning it would only scare Li Yufen and her husband.
“Pengpeng has always been a good child, as you know. How could he attract such… unclean things?” Li Yufen couldn’t understand.
“These small ghosts generally can’t stray too far from the place where the incident occurred. The nearby water area is the artificial lake outside the resettlement area. Sister Yufen, you and Brother Fang often take the children for evening walks by the lake. That’s a time of Yin and Yang transition, a very special time period. Pengpeng has been frail since he was young, so he may have been targeted then.” Luo Wenshu offered her guess.
After she explained, Li Yufen suddenly remembered something. “It seems like the day before yesterday… yes, the day before yesterday evening, your Brother Fang and I took Pengpeng for a walk by the lake. We chatted with an acquaintance…”
The path where residents frequently walked had high and closely spaced railings, so there was no need to worry about children accidentally falling.
Therefore, the couple hadn’t paid much attention to the child. After finishing their conversation and saying goodbye, when they looked back at Pengpeng, they saw him standing by the railing, holding onto it with both hands.
Li Yufen called out to him twice before he turned around.
Li Yufen asked him what he was looking at.
“Mom, there’s a little friend over there!” Pengpeng pointed beyond the railing and said to Li Yufen.
Li Yufen was startled. That was the water; had someone’s child had an accident?
She quickly approached, following Pengpeng’s finger, but saw nothing.
“There’s nothing there, Pengpeng. Point it out to Mom again,” Li Yufen said worriedly.
“It’s right there, wearing a dress…” Pengpeng said, looking around, his eyes becoming somewhat confused. “Huh, it’s gone…”
Although the path by the lake had streetlights, they were dim, enough to illuminate the path but making it difficult to see beyond the railing.
“I didn’t think much of it then. I just thought he had mistaken something, maybe a plastic bag floating on the water or something. I never imagined…” Strictly speaking, Li Yufen wasn’t to blame, but she still felt a tinge of self-reproach.
“Most likely, Pengpeng was targeted at that time,” Luo Wenshu said. “I’ll ask for details later.”
Li Yufen and her husband were momentarily stunned.
“Ask… ask who?”
Pengpeng, or…?
The answer was obviously the latter. After all, Pengpeng was still in the hospital, and even he didn’t know much. The only one who knew the most was the little ghost.
Luo Wenshu looked out the window. The sun was almost completely set, leaving only a sliver of twilight in the sky.
After dark, the power of supernatural beings would increase to some extent.
However, the little water ghost had been trapped in the old refrigerator on the rooftop of the neighboring building after she used spiritual power to draw a talisman yesterday.
That corner received some sunlight, although not directly on the ghost, it still weakened its power to some extent.
Therefore, the slight increase brought by the night was negated.
Luo Wenshu decided to deal with this now, lest something unexpected happen if she waited too long.
It just so happened that she had obtained a position for Luo Xingyu from Youming Wuchang today. Dealing with the little water ghost on the rooftop of the neighboring building would not only solve Pengpeng’s problem but also give Luo Xingyu his first achievement as a human emissary.
Two birds with one stone, waste utilization.
Perfect.
At this moment, the room door opened, and Luo Xingyu, eyes red and swollen like a little rabbit, stood in the doorway, looking at the three adults in the living room with a dazed expression, yet still politely greeting them.
“…Mom… Mom, Aunt Li, Uncle Fang…”
“Xiaoyu, what’s wrong? Your eyes are red and swollen,” Li Yufen asked with concern.
Luo Wenshu answered, “He fell while we were out today.”
Luo Xingyu looked at her blankly, then after a two-second pause, nodded in agreement, “Yes, it hurt so much…”
Li Yufen didn’t suspect anything.
Having finished their discussion, the couple soon took their leave.
After seeing them off, Luo Wenshu turned to Luo Xingyu, “I need to go to the rooftop to take care of something. Lend me your seal.”
After saying that, she paused for two seconds and added, “You can come with me if you want.”
Luo Xingyu had been awakened by the conversation outside.
Although Luo Wenshu had thoughtfully closed the room door, the conversation could still be heard inside.
Half-asleep, Luo Xingyu had overheard part of the conversation and thus knew what Luo Wenshu was going to do.
Perhaps because of Luo Wenshu’s previous transmigration into her mother’s body, Luo Xingyu wasn’t as scared knowing that Pengpeng was harmed by a ghost.
He hesitated for a moment, then nodded, “Okay.”
The two quickly arrived at the rooftop of the neighboring building.
The evening light was gradually fading, and a breeze blew from afar.
Luo Xingyu looked at the ordinary-looking old refrigerator in the corner and suddenly felt a chill.
Luo Wenshu reached out and touched his head, transferring some spiritual energy.
Luo Xingyu distinctly felt the bone-chilling coldness disappear instantly.
He looked up at Luo Wenshu.
“Do you want to see what’s inside?” Luo Wenshu asked.
Except for cultivators and a very small number of people born with Yin and Yang eyes, ordinary people need external help to see supernatural beings.
Their eyes met, and after a few seconds, Luo Xingyu nodded emphatically, “Yes!”
————————
The little water ghost was furious.
It was so close, just a little bit, and she would have caught her substitute!
She had trapped the child in the old refrigerator, freezing his body, covering his mouth to prevent him from calling for help.
She hadn’t killed him immediately; instead, she wanted to gradually extinguish his hope in this small space, making him feel fear and despair, and finally die in extreme despair.
Only a substitute who died this way was the best substitute.
She pressed close to the child’s body, clearly feeling the fear and despair constantly emanating from his heart, like high-quality nourishment, nurturing her spirit.
The child’s life force was weakening, about to die.
Perhaps a minute, perhaps ten minutes.
The little water ghost wasn’t in a hurry; no one would find her here anyway.
She thought this, and was quickly proven wrong.
That woman…
The little water ghost had a venomous expression.
That meddlesome woman had not only ruined her plans but also trapped her in this old refrigerator!
The scorching sun had shone almost from morning till evening, one of the things ghosts fear most. She felt like a fish grilled on a hot plate over burning coals, as if she could hear the sizzling sound, painful yet unable to escape.
The little water ghost was even angrier, almost losing her reason.
And now, she heard that woman’s voice again.
After sunset, her power gradually recovered. The little water ghost frantically slammed against the old refrigerator, emitting a chilling cry.
Suddenly, the refrigerator door opened.
The little water ghost rushed out, her body floating in mid-air, her expression momentarily dazed.
She looked around, her gaze finally falling on the slender figure in front of her.
The little water ghost’s body twisted, emitting thick black resentment, almost solidifying into substance.
“I’ll kill you—” Her face became terrifying, her eyes venomous, she shrieked and lunged at Luo Wenshu.
Kill her, tear her apart…
Although young, Luo Xingyu was quite brave.
His mother liked watching horror movies but was too scared to watch them alone, always dragging him along.
The sudden music and images initially scared him a little, but after watching many, he got used to it.
His courage grew stronger and stronger.
However, movies were different from reality.
At this moment, standing on the rooftop, Luo Xingyu saw a terrifying little girl screaming and rushing towards him.
His little face instantly turned pale, instinctively hiding behind Luo Wenshu, his small hands tightly clutching her clothes.
“Mom…” He instinctively called out.
“Don’t be afraid,” Luo Wenshu said softly.
She had opened the refrigerator door; she dared to do so because she was prepared for what would happen next.
When the little water ghost came out, she had already raised her hand, using the heavens and earth as a scroll, gathering spiritual energy between her fingers, quickly drawing a talisman.
As the little water ghost charged, it collided head-on with the talisman, its entire spirit body flying backward, hitting the open door of the old refrigerator.
Instantly, the resentment emanating from the little water ghost dissipated significantly, and even her spirit body became fainter.
The talisman in the void didn’t disappear; the lines drawn by spiritual energy faintly emitted golden light, dispersing and quickly reforming, finally turning into a binding rope, flying towards the little water ghost, firmly binding her spirit body.
The little water ghost, overwhelmed by anger, finally regained a little rationality, realizing that she couldn’t provoke the woman in front of her.
She struggled desperately, trying to break free, but the talisman rope remained motionless.
Fear began to appear in the little water ghost’s venomous eyes.
“Tell me, when did you die, how did you die, and why are you targeting Fang Peng?” Luo Wenshu’s voice was indifferent as she asked several questions.
Although trapped and unable to escape, the little water ghost didn’t cooperate.
Her eyes were filled with fear, venom, and mockery.
“I’m not very patient. I’ll give you one more chance to answer my questions properly. I can send you to the Netherworld, but if you don’t, then never speak again.”
The little water ghost still had the same expression.
Luo Wenshu’s eyes turned cold, she raised her hand and made a hand gesture. The talisman rope binding the little water ghost instantly tightened, like a sharp blade, cutting into her spirit body, severing her left arm.
“Ah—” A painful, piercing scream.
“I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you, spare me, please!” The little water ghost finally accepted reality. The woman in front of her was too terrifying; she couldn’t afford to provoke her.
Luo Wenshu withdrew her hand, her eyes coldly fixed on her.
The little water ghost obediently answered Luo Wenshu’s questions.
She had fallen into the artificial lake and drowned half a year ago.
Normally, the little ghosts would take the soul away soon after death.
But before the Netherworld ghosts arrived, the little water ghost encountered a strange woman who did something to her body, trapping her in that small area of water, unable to go anywhere.
Initially, her mind was muddled, wandering in that water, hiding under the lush aquatic plants during the day to avoid the sun, and squatting by the shore at night to watch passersby.
She reached out to grab them, but her hand passed through them; she couldn’t touch them.
Until recently, she felt her power growing stronger, and she saw Fang Peng, whose soul fire was weak, by the lake and targeted him, going to his house and, while they were playing games, using a loophole to seize him as a substitute.
There were four children there at the time; the little ghost had looked at each of them. She had been most satisfied with another child, the one standing there.
But she heard him call the terrifying woman “Mom,” so she didn’t dare mention this.
After hearing the little water ghost’s words, Luo Wenshu slightly frowned.
Many things didn’t make sense; the little water ghost clearly didn’t know the full story.
“I… I’ve said everything…” The little water ghost said cautiously.
After learning her lesson, she became more obedient. Although Luo Wenshu had promised to send her to the Netherworld if she answered her questions properly, she didn’t dare to urge her now and only tried to remind her.
“Take out the seal,” Luo Wenshu said to Luo Xingyu behind her.
The latter’s face was still pale. Hearing this, he reached up to take off the red string around his neck, with a small jade pendant that looked like an ordinary ornament.
But it wasn’t; at the bottom of the jade pendant, there was a special pattern personally carved by Youming Wuchang, able to communicate with the Netherworld’s power, temporarily opening the Ghost Gate.
“Just stamp the seal on her forehead. Should I do it, or do you want to try it yourself?” Luo Wenshu asked his opinion.
Luo Xingyu bit his lip, thought for a moment, “I… I want to try!”
……
In a deep mountain in Chunshi City.
Xie Fei was closing his eyes in thought when he suddenly sensed something.
The human emissary seal he had given out that noon suddenly sent back feedback.
To be honest, although the seal was given out by him, and half a day had passed, Xie Fei still felt it was surreal. He could hardly believe that he had actually agreed to the woman named Luo Wenshu’s absurd request—
To take a five-year-old child who knew nothing as his subordinate and give him a personally carved human emissary seal.
“My subordinate is currently short-staffed. This child doesn’t know anything about this, but it doesn’t matter because I’ll handle everything.” The woman said with a smile.
Xie Fei asked, “If that’s the case, why not do it yourself?”
The woman said as if joking, “What I want, you don’t have.”
Xie Fei looked into her eyes, and she didn’t avoid his gaze.
Those eyes were calm, like a pool of water in an ancient well, without a ripple.
For a moment, Xie Fei couldn’t see through her words, whether they were true or false.
Xie Fei wanted to see what the woman wanted to do.
Various reasons combined to make him give her the seal.
“Southeast direction, Ghost Gate opens.”
Xie Fei narrowed his eyes, thought for a moment, and decided to go and see.
He raised his hand and drew a line in the air, and the outline of a door appeared out of thin air.
Xie Fei stood up, straightened his robe, and stepped inside.
When he came out again, he was already on a rooftop.
Luo Wenshu and her son, whom he had met that noon, were beside him. In the corner, a little water ghost was bound by a talisman rope on the old refrigerator.
His sudden appearance didn’t seem to surprise Luo Wenshu at all; instead, she looked at him with a smile, saying, “This little ghost seems to have some peculiarities. I’m not very familiar with the situation here. I was going to tell you, sir, but you happened to come for an inspection…”
Xie Fei:?
So this trip made it convenient for her to report the situation?
