Chapter 1

It was approaching noon. Sunlight spilled through the gaps in the curtains, pooling on the wooden floor where dust motes danced in the quiet air.

Xu Ziyan rolled over and groggily opened his eyes. The first thing that hit him was a wave of soreness washing over his entire body. Immediately after, chaotic memories of the previous night came crashing back. His face exploded in heat, and he bolted upright from the bed as if he’d been electrocuted.

On the other side of the large bed lay a tall, powerfully built man. A thin quilt was draped over him, obscuring most of the evidence, but his brow was slightly furrowed in sleep. Fortunately, due to Xu Ziyan’s commotion, he only frowned slightly; there were no signs of him waking up just yet.

Seeing that the man was still asleep, Xu Ziyan let out a breath he’d been holding. Yet, his heart began to race faster, pounding like a drum against his eardrums. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed nervously. With difficulty, he took a step forward and craned his neck to peek at the man’s face.

From his angle, he could only see a sharp, chiseled profile. The man possessed deep-set features and a striking, handsome face. Even with his eyes closed, the slight furrow of his brow carried an indescribable coldness. He had a high nose bridge and thin lips—though right now, a small cut marred the curve of his lip. That was Xu Ziyan’s handiwork from last night.

Once he clearly registered the man’s face, Xu Ziyan’s knees turned to jelly. His trembling hand reached back to touch the scent gland at the nape of his neck.

A bite mark—so distinct it was undeniable—shattered his last shred of wishful thinking. Xu Ziyan’s face went pale, then flushed red. A sense of despair washed over him: It’s all over.

He, a mere youth trainee, had actually possessed the gall to devour the top Alpha Captain.

How on earth did things end up like this?

Xu Ziyan squatted on the floor, clutching his head, and struggled to recall the events leading up to this.

The Night Before.

It was just past 10:30 PM. The night sky over City A had deepened into a dark violet hue. It was the height of winter, and the bleak wind howled outside, but the TWG Esports Club’s Resist division remained brightly lit.

Inside the youth training camp on the first floor, a solitary figure sat before a computer screen glowing with blue light. Xu Ziyan gripped the mouse, refreshing the webpage with burning anxiety.

As the time in the bottom right corner ticked over, the content of the webpage finally updated.

His eyes lit up. He spun the scroll wheel furiously, dragging the page straight to the bottom.

Skipping over the polite boilerplate text, what greeted him were three glaring, blood-red words: DID NOT PASS.

“…Dear Player Xu Ziyan, after our strict evaluation, we believe you still lack certain qualities required of a professional player. Therefore, we must decline your application to join the team at this time… Damn it! Why is it this same set of excuses again!“

Xu Ziyan ruffled his hair in frustration and clicked out of the webpage. He stared at the game interface, displaying his ranking in the top 100 of the National Server, and sank into deep self-doubt.
