Chapter 11
Xu Ziyan’s hand trembled around his chopsticks. He tried his hardest to keep his composure, suppressing the panic threatening to show on his face. He had intended to play dumb, but seeing Yuan Shaofeng and Bai Ke also looking at him in unison, he realized these guys had probably harbored suspicions for a while and had only held back from asking out of consideration for his feelings.
The scent blocker he had sprayed a few days ago was losing its effectiveness. Afraid that someone might smell Xie Wei’s scent on him, Xu Ziyan had slapped a scent patch on his neck to cover it up. He thought wearing a high-collared shirt would hide it, but unexpectedly, it had been spotted so quickly.
Playing dumb was no longer an option. He touched the back of his neck and let out an embarrassed laugh. “…Yeah.”
Yuan Shaofeng let out a heavy sigh, sounding aggrieved. “Sigh, sure enough. All the good Omegas are already taken.”
Taken?
Xu Ziyan thought of Xie Wei’s face and smiled self-deprecatingly. A top-tier man like Xie Wei… how could he possibly be his Alpha? But he didn’t deny it either, silently accepting the misunderstanding.
Meng Cang continued to ask, “Is he in the circle?”
“The circle” referred to the esports industry.
Xu Ziyan didn’t know whether to say yes or no for a moment, looking a bit troubled.
Bai Ke noticed this and timely slapped the back of Meng Cang’s head. “What are you asking blindly for?”
He then apologized to Xu Ziyan, “Don’t mind Hide; he has no malice. His EQ is just rock bottom, and he likes to get to the bottom of things. Don’t be angry.”
Xu Ziyan smiled and joked, “I watched Hide’s stream before. He talked the captain of neighboring team HG into a mental breakdown. Compared to that, this doesn’t even count as a trifle. If I got angry over this, I’d be way too petty.”
Meng Cang was a bit surprised. “You’ve watched my stream?”
Xu Ziyan said, “I’ve basically watched everyone who plays well.”
Yuan Shaofeng leaned in to join the fun. “Then you must be a loyal fan of mine.”
Bai Ke scoffed, “Self-awareness is a virtue.”
Amidst the banter, the topic naturally shifted elsewhere. Xu Ziyan quietly breathed a sigh of relief in his heart, but at the same time felt a bit distressed: One lie requires more lies to cover it up. Where am I going to find an Alpha boyfriend later?
Forget it. He picked up some food with his chopsticks and thought while chewing: When the time comes, I’ll just say I was dumped by a scumbag and play the victim card. Given the temperaments of these guys in the second string, they definitely won’t probe too deeply.
Thinking of this, Xu Ziyan let go of his worries and continued chatting happily.
While he had let it go, Xie Wei, on the other hand, couldn’t quite figure things out.
Previously, Shen Xiao, fearing the world wasn’t chaotic enough, had fanned the flames by claiming Xie Wei had fallen in love at first sight with the second string’s new Medic. That statement was obviously a joke; everyone was curious and had a laugh, but no one believed it. After all, Xie Wei’s persona as the inviolable “High Mountain Snow Lotus” had stood for too long and was deeply rooted in everyone’s hearts. No matter how good-looking the second-string Medic was, he was just an ordinary Omega. How could he possibly melt the iceberg?
Only Xie Wei knew that he was genuinely a little flustered. All day long, his mind was filled with Xu Ziyan—worrying if his body was uncomfortable, if he felt unwell anywhere, if he was being bullied after joining the second string, how he was getting along with his teammates, and if he was used to the second string’s training pace.
As a Top Alpha, Xie Wei was tall, incredibly handsome, and came from a premier background. Possessing such scarce resources for over twenty years, he had never been in a relationship and rarely interacted with Omegas. This sudden situation had him a bit dazed.
After some hesitation, he opened a search engine, described his situation, checked the “Anonymous” box, and clicked post.
Less than five minutes later, a reply popped up.
[Bro, you purely just have a virgin complex.]
Xie Wei: “…”
Chapter 12
Xie Wei had assumed Xu Ziyan would be like those Omegas who deliberately tried to get close to him in the past—calling him or texting him every few days with various excuses. But unfortunately, no such thing happened. The off-season period was calm and tranquil. Between daily training and ranked matches, life wasn’t much different from before.
Xie Wei couldn’t quite describe the flavor of emotions in his heart. After tangling with it for a few weeks, he simply stopped thinking about it and threw the matter to the back of his mind.
Coincidentally, Resist welcomed a massive version update. All the teams were swamped dealing with the new changes and maps. As the captain, it was naturally impossible for Xie Wei to delay serious business for personal affairs. Back and forth, he quickly returned to his usual routine.
It was late at night again. Outside the window was pitch black; a solitary moon hung in the sky, with sparse lights visible in the distance.
Xie Wei had just finished a ranked match. He lowered his eyes to mark the few drop points and flanking positions he had just tested. When he looked up and saw it was getting late, he belatedly remembered he hadn’t eaten dinner yet.
He was the only one left in the training room. Xie Wei rubbed his sore neck, clicked the mouse twice to shut down the computer, stood up, and grabbed his car keys, intending to go out for a late-night snack.
The corridor was deserted and dark, stretching out endlessly. At first glance, it looked a bit eerie. Xie Wei walked to the elevator, absentmindedly scrolling through his phone, when he suddenly heard a not-so-quiet noise from downstairs. He paused.
At this hour, is there still someone in the training room who hasn’t gone back?
As this question arose, Xu Ziyan’s face inexplicably floated into his mind.
It had been so busy these past few days, and Xu Ziyan had been tactful enough not to force his presence, so Xie Wei rarely thought about that incident anymore. However, how could the first Omega he had ever marked in his life be so easily forgotten?
As if possessed by a ghost, he pressed the button for the second floor.
The second floor, like the third, was quiet.
The door to the training room was cracked open slightly. Light spilled out from inside, casting a long strip of illumination onto the corridor. Xie Wei unconsciously lightened his footsteps and looked inside through the crack in the door.
Inside the training room, in front of the only computer still lit, Xu Ziyan was sprawled out on the desk, fast asleep. Finished takeout boxes and beverage bottles were set aside, not yet thrown away; clearly, he had squeezed in his meal right in front of the computer.
On the computer screen, the queue interface had disappeared because the confirmation button hadn’t been clicked in time. The penalty countdown for being banned from queuing showed two or three minutes remaining. Calculating back, Xu Ziyan had only been asleep for ten minutes or so. Even in sleep, his hand still rested on the mouse, unmoving.
Xie Wei was somewhat surprised.
To be honest, he had assumed Xu Ziyan was just “all looks and no substance,” which was why he used his body to exchange for a spot on the team. Although he had already asked someone to handle the messy situation at the youth training camp, prejudice is hard to change once etched in. Therefore, Xie Wei always felt Xu Ziyan’s skills weren’t up to par.
But at this moment, looking at the Omega who had collapsed from exhaustion in front of the computer, his heart wavered slightly.
He picked up his phone and entered the ID “Ice” into the ladder ranking app.
Rank: 57th.
The top 100 on the ladder were almost exclusively pro players and “Pub Gods.” Advancing even a single rank was difficult, yet Xu Ziyan had forcefully squeezed forward by more than ten ranks.
And this was during a major version update.
Xie Wei was astonished and surprised. Looking at the soundly sleeping Xu Ziyan, he hesitated, then pushed the door open. He walked in lightly, found a blanket to drape over him, and then left just as quietly.
After a training match ended, Xu Ziyan stretched his back and let out a huge yawn.
Although nominally he was still a substitute Medic for the second string, in reality, everyone had already tacitly accepted him as the new starter.
Yuan Shaofeng, who was closest to him, saw this and asked, “Didn’t sleep well yesterday?”
“I slept pretty well.” Xu Ziyan twisted his neck. This wasn’t a lie. Because of the version update these past few days, he wished he could marinate himself in the training room; sleeping in front of the computer was a common occurrence.
Usually, sleeping like that meant needing coffee to sustain his life the next day. But yesterday, for some reason, he suddenly smelled a very, very reassuring scent while half-asleep. Consequently, he slept incredibly well and woke up full of energy, ready to fight for another ten hours.
After thinking about it, Xu Ziyan turned his head and asked, “By the way, Brother Yuan, I fell asleep in the training room yesterday. Did you put the blanket on me?”
“Nope.” Yuan Shaofeng turned around to ask the others for him, but all the answers were negative.
Xu Ziyan found it a bit strange but didn’t pursue it further, assuming it was just a kind-hearted passerby.
After hastily eating dinner, he sat back in front of the computer and clicked queue.
This was peak time, so he found a match very quickly. After clicking the confirm button, Xu Ziyan was adjusting his keyboard when Yuan Shaofeng next to him suddenly let out a cry of surprise and poked Xu Ziyan’s arm vigorously. “Holy crap! Ice! I’ll give you ten bucks if you let me play this match for you!”
Xu Ziyan had a head full of question marks. He looked up at his teammate list.
He wouldn’t have known if he hadn’t looked, but one look gave him a fright.
The player in the 2nd slot, marked as a Sniper, had the ID: Shining.
It was Xie Wei.
