Chapter 7
The moment he heard the voice, Xu Ziyan’s eyes lit up. He looked up toward the entrance and, sure enough, saw Xie Wei standing there in his team uniform.
However, the Xie Wei standing there now seemed much more distant than the man he had seen in the bedroom that morning. Coupled with his pursed lips and evident displeasure, he gave off an aura that made him difficult to approach.
Xu Ziyan opened his mouth to speak, but remembering Xie Wei’s earlier warning, he hesitated and ultimately swallowed his greeting.
Wang Jingyu, on the other hand, was scared witless. He quickly shook off Xu Ziyan’s hand and let out an awkward, ingratiating laugh. “Captain Xie! What brings you here? This… this is just a misunderstanding. This Omega is about to leave the camp and go home. He was begging me for one more tryout chance, so that’s why… Haha, rest assured, Captain Xie! I have principles! I’d never be that kind of sucker!”
The real “sucker”—Xie Wei—twitched the corner of his lips in a smile that wasn’t quite a smile.
He had spent his morning running around handling the transfer paperwork, greeting the second-string coach, and dealing with contracts and legal teams until his head was spinning. He had just finished a training match and hurried over to the youth camp—ignoring the teasing looks from the head coach and manager—only to stumble upon this scene.
Seeing the Omega he had marked being harassed by another Alpha would make anyone furious.
Xie Wei cast a cold glance at Wang Jingyu, who was still wearing that fake apologetic smile and trying to lie his way out of it. Xie Wei stepped forward quickly, pulled the still-dazed Xu Ziyan over to his side, and frowned as he looked him over from head to toe. Only after confirming the boy was unharmed did he let out a sigh of relief.
He lowered his voice and asked with dissatisfaction, “Didn’t I tell you to get some proper rest?”
Xu Ziyan hung his head, looking nothing like the prickly hedgehog he had been moments ago. He replied obediently in a whisper, “I… I forgot my peripherals here.”
The volume of their conversation was suppressed, audible only to each other.
Wang Jingyu, watching their interaction from the side, suddenly felt a sense of foreboding rising in his chest. His expression turned ugly. “C-Captain Xie, do you two know each other?”
“Coach Wang, did you not receive the notification from the team?”
Xie Wei turned around, his eyes icy, though a smile played on his lips. “The second string’s Medic retired due to unforeseen circumstances. The team decided to promote someone from here to fill the spot. I came here today specifically to announce this.”
“By the way, what did you say just now?” His smile deepened, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You said this player—who has already been confirmed for the second string—was ‘begging’ you for a tryout?”
Wang Jingyu’s face went sheet white, a layer of cold sweat breaking out across his back.
He did indeed have connections in management, but compared to Xie Wei, his backer wasn’t even worth mentioning. It was common knowledge that ninety percent of TWG’s shares were held by the Xie family, and Xie Wei was the undeniable heir. To call Xie Wei the true owner of TWG was no exaggeration.
“Just a joke…” Wang Jingyu forced out a smile that looked uglier than crying. “I was just joking…”
Xie Wei chuckled, ignored him, and turned to Xu Ziyan, who was watching the drama unfold with rapt attention. “Did you pack everything?”
Seeing Wang Jingyu eat humble pie gave Xu Ziyan a thrill unlike anything he had ever felt. A cheerful smile involuntarily spread across his face. “All packed!”
Xie Wei nodded and led him away. As they passed Wang Jingyu, Xie Wei patted him on the shoulder and said in a flat tone, “You should pack your things, too. There’s plenty waiting for you later.”
Wang Jingyu’s lips trembled as he stared blankly at their retreating figures. He wracked his brain but couldn’t figure it out—how on earth did Xu Ziyan manage to climb aboard the massive ship that was Xie Wei?
Meanwhile, the trainee who had been sitting next to Xu Ziyan looked on with pure envy, regretting that he hadn’t built a better relationship with Xu Ziyan earlier. If he had known Xu Ziyan had this kind of luck, things would be different. But now, it was too late for anything.
In the corridor, Xu Ziyan said sheepishly, “Captain, I caused you trouble again.”
He looked around, and seeing no one else, asked carefully, “Didn’t you say before that we shouldn’t let others know we know each other? Back there in the training room…”
“They don’t matter. They’ll all be going home soon anyway; we probably won’t see them again in this lifetime.” Xie Wei glanced at him. “That guy, Wang Jingyu… did he harass you before?”
Xu Ziyan hesitated, then nodded honestly. “I reported him before, but it didn’t do any good.”
Xie Wei detested people with dirty hands and feet the most. Hearing that the guy was a nepotism hire with a backer only fueled his anger. “Understood. I’ll handle this matter, so don’t worry about it. You’re still living in the youth camp dorms, right?”
“Yes.” He had joined the team, the annoying idiot was being dealt with, and the person he liked was right in front of him. Xu Ziyan’s mood was skyrocketing. “Should I hurry and pack my luggage to move to the second-string dorms?”
“No rush,” Xie Wei said. “Report to the second string first. You can take care of moving whenever you have a day off. As long as you move out before the next batch of trainees arrives, it’s fine.”
He paused. Remembering the scattered, clumsy, and somewhat dense impression Xu Ziyan had given him throughout this short day, Xie Wei still felt uneasy. He wanted to give him a few more instructions.
But when he turned his head and met the Omega’s sparkling, expectant eyes, Xie Wei silently cursed himself for being a busybody. Why was he blindly caring for an Omega who had used him to climb the ranks?
He swallowed the rest of his words and said with a cold, dry tone, “Let’s go.”
