Chapter 116: Extra — Leon part 1
Shi Ye carried Wen Rong into the ambulance. Leon wanted to follow, but seeing the room full of people, he ultimately decided to stay behind and secure the evidence.
Facts proved that this was the correct choice. Wen Rong had truly done something earth-shattering this time.
After bringing the evidence back from the Outer District, Leon received the news that Wen Rong had been admitted to the ICU.
It was expected, given how badly he was injured.
Leon didn’t go to the hospital. Instead, he flew to District 1 immediately.
He arrived at five in the morning. For the first time, he woke his sleeping father, explained the sequence of events, presented the evidence, and, acting like a prosecutor, demanded his father cooperate with the investigation.
It wasn’t until breakfast that Justice Ernst blankly came to his senses. “Oh, what did you say? What trafficking? What do you want me to do?”
Leon: “Have you been sleeping alone in that empty room for so long you need brain supplements?”
This was him being polite for the sake of their father-son relationship. For the next few days, Leon was in a mood where he’d snap at a passing dog. When he visited the homes of the other six judges regarding this matter and was asked why he was handling this work, he opened his mouth and fired: “If the Federal Court prosecutors spent less time playing dress-up games with female celebrities, would it fall to a college student to dig up a massive case of official organ trafficking?”
Ernst coughed, hinting at his son to stop roasting people, but Leon only grew bolder. “Why aren’t we discussing business? Do I need to study child psychology just to communicate with you all?”
The Six Great Justices: “…”
Justice Ernst: “Cough, cough, cough.“
In the blink of an eye, half a month passed. Everyone in the entire court system had been roasted by Leon at least once.
It wasn’t until news came from afar that Wen Rong had woken up that Justice Ernst breathed a sigh of relief. The six judges expressed their sentiments one after another: “I was blind before, always nagging you about why your son wouldn’t inherit your mantle. Now it seems you were truly wise back then!”
At that moment, Leon was cross-referencing a list with Evelyn. He stopped abruptly. Evelyn keenly asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Wen Rong is awake.” Leon was so excited he forgot to hide the expression on his face.
Bam—
By the time he snapped out of it, Evelyn was already backing against the door, ready for battle.
“Cousin, we came in together, we leave together.”
“Yesterday, Jiang Zhiyue asked me how the progress was going.”
“Why didn’t she ask me!”
Leon: “Maybe she doesn’t like you.”
Evelyn bristled. “She doesn’t like you either! Wen Rong likes you even less.”
“If you take charge of these matters alone, I can have her come to you, since you’ll be the only one here today.”
The devil whispered a second time: “She cares about Wang Sichen’s case just as much as Wen Rong does. If your career starts with this… imagine the way she’ll look at you in the future…”
When people become lovestruck, they are very easy to scam.
For the first time, Leon discovered his cousin was so easy to talk to.
When he arrived at the hospital, the sunlight was lovely. Wen Rong was standing by the balcony, holding a paper cup with holes punched in it to water a potted plant with one hand, and holding his phone with the other.
The light reflecting off the screen swept across Leon’s face. He had to close his eyes for a moment, deliberately making a hissing sound.
“Senior!”
“Mn.”
Wen Rong put down the cup and walked over to hug him. “It’s so good that you’re okay.”
“It feels like I should be the one saying that.”
Since Wen Rong saw him, he would inevitably ask about Wang Sichen’s case. Leon had already prepared his answers on the plane.
In addition to that, he told Wen Rong that the children from the welfare institute had successfully gone to the new welfare institute in the Inner District.
Xiao Hua’s hand was being examined, and she would soon undergo surgery to remove the extra finger.
Xiao Shan viewed Wen Rong as his idol, swearing to grow up in the welfare institute just like his idol and get into Floriman Academy in the future.
The child didn’t yet understand that Floriman Academy didn’t recruit commoner students. Fortunately, the welfare institutes in the Inner District were much better than those in the Outer District. They could guarantee he would study well. If he could get into university later, he would receive a monthly living stipend from the welfare institute.
“What about Xiao Chun?” Wen Rong asked.
Leon paused, then said regretfully, “Federal law prohibits prostitution. Xiao Chun and all the women from that town are currently cooperating with the investigation at the police station. Later, they will be sentenced according to Federal law.”
“What if they were forced—”
“Those forced will be arranged for separately, but you should be able to guess that they were willing.”
Wen Rong was silent for a long time.
Leon knew what Wen Rong was thinking.
He poured him a cup of water. “There are many helpless situations. The existence of the law and the jury is to handle this ‘helplessness’ as fairly and reasonably as possible.”
“Then Dr. Li…”
Leon had also been shocked when he learned that Dr. Li cooperated with the town mayor to harvest organs.
He had seen Dr. Li taking care of Xiao Hua, knew Wen Rong had been treated by her, and understood the mix of emotions Wen Rong was feeling right now.
“She is a middle-aged woman who has received a formal education. Did you ask her what she thought herself?”
Wen Rong was stunned, then asked urgently, “Can I see her?”
“As a key witness, you need to avoid suspicion right now.”
After saying this, Leon felt he was being terrible. Coming to see Wen Rong only added to his troubles.
“But you really did something amazing this time. Senior can reward you.”
Wen Rong: “Reward?”
“I’ll give you a chance to run wild. No matter what you do, Senior will cover for you.”
Leon didn’t mention restrictions like “don’t break the law.” He thought that even without a reminder, Wen Rong wouldn’t do it.
Wen Rong didn’t immediately say what reward he wanted.
Leon noticed the flowerpot on Wen Rong’s balcony again and remembered that hospitals wouldn’t put flowers in patient rooms for no reason. So he asked, “Is this flower from the hospital?”
“Zhou Xie sent it.”
Oh, Zhou Xie sent it.
Making Wen Rong water it every day?
While no one was downstairs, Leon “accidentally” knocked the flowerpot off the balcony and replaced it with one he picked himself.
He accompanied Wen Rong for dinner before flying back to District 1.
Upon his return, Leon looked refreshed and was much gentler with everyone.
One month later, Leon completely finished the work at hand and returned to school.
Wang Sichen’s case implicated too many people this time. One-third of the students at Floriman Academy had complaints about Wen Rong because their parents or grandparents had been taken away by the police. They probably felt that if Wen Rong hadn’t exposed these things, their families wouldn’t be in trouble.
However, Wen Rong had an impressive track record in confrontation, so no idiot dared to show these thoughts on the surface—except for Shi Jing, who had been absent for too long.
To give Shi Jing some competitive edge against Shi Ye for the inheritance, his mother had used her status as the First Madam of the Shi family to arrange a whole set of award-winning films for Shi Jing, wanting to prop up a pre-fabricated international movie star.
The benefit was that Shi Jing stayed away from Wen Rong. The downside was that next year, the entire Federation’s audience would be forced to suffer eye sores.
Now, the only benefit was gone.
Before Leon could even message Wen Rong to ask him out for lunch, he heard that Shi Jing had cornered Wen Rong in the cafeteria.
No rival in love had ever given Leon such a headache. Leon really wanted to invent a time machine to travel back a year and stop Wen Rong from saving this mother and son pair.
As Leon expected, when he ran to the cafeteria, he heard Shi Jing crying.
“What’s the problem with changing a few hearts when you’re sick? It’s not like we didn’t pay.”
Leon knew about this.
Shi Changyuan was utterly heartless toward Shi Ye and his mother, but for Zhang Wanfei, he was willing to break any bottom line.
Wang Sichen’s secret connection with the Shi family was entirely because Zhang Wanfei’s brother—Shi Jing’s uncle—was critically ill and needed a heart transplant.
