Chapter 56
Chi Aibei was fine when he left school last night, but he came in the next day with a patch of gauze on his head. Not much time had passed since he was hit by a ball last time, yet he had injured his head again.
Lin Yang pointed at the gauze on Chi Aibei’s head. “Holy crap, did you get ambushed?”
Chi Aibei touched the gauze to scare people. “Nothing much, just got into a minor car accident.”
Lin Yang was shocked. “Car accident?”
Lin Xiu glanced at Chi Aibei, who was exaggerating. “Don’t make it sound so scary.”
He Chenjiang happened to enter the classroom and immediately saw the injured Chi Aibei. Jiang Yu frowned at him and asked Lin Xiu without avoiding the subject, “He Chenjiang didn’t do that, did he?”
He Chenjiang: “…” He was fine when he left my house yesterday.
Chi Aibei thought to himself, It IS his fault. If he hadn’t insisted I go to his house, I wouldn’t have passed that road. If I didn’t go there, the stray cat wouldn’t have jumped out, and I wouldn’t have gotten hurt.
Chi Aibei said, “He’s bad luck for me.”
Jiang Yu said, “I think so too. When you were in the same class as him, everyone thought you were stupid. Once you weren’t in his class, you weren’t stupid anymore.”
Lin Yang quickly looked at Chi Aibei and said, “Now that he’s transferred to our class, don’t go stupid again.”
Chi Aibei: “…” Don’t say such stupid things.
Lin Yang looked at Lin Xiu. “True. Your deskmate is the top student, the one in front is the study committee member, plus me, the ninth in the grade, guarding you. You’re surrounded by smart people; you can’t be that stupid.”
Jiang Yu was speechless. “Forget about yourself. You’re stupider than him.”
…
Lin Xiu didn’t leave after school in the evening. During evening self-study, Lin Xiu followed them back into the classroom.
Jiang Yu looked at Lin Xiu, who was taking papers out of his schoolbag. “You’re… staying for evening self-study?”
Lin Xiu gave a hum of affirmation.
Chi Aibei was particularly happy knowing Lin Xiu was staying for evening self-study and didn’t feel anything was amiss.
Jiang Yu glanced at He Chenjiang, who was also in the classroom. “Don’t tell me you’re…”
Lin Xiu looked at him. “Yeah.”
Jiang Yu: “…I haven’t even said it.”
Lin Xiu: “I know what you want to say. It is what you think.”
Jiang Yu felt Lin Xiu probably didn’t know what he was thinking, since his thoughts were a bit absurd.
Lin Xiu only found out yesterday that He Chenjiang was attending evening self-study. If he hadn’t taken Chi Aibei away yesterday, Lin Xiu might not have stayed today. Since He Chenjiang was getting impatient, naturally, he had to come and keep watch.
Chi Aibei listened to the whole exchange but understood nothing. “What are you talking about?”
Lin Xiu said, “Nothing. I’ll accompany you for self-study from now on. Didn’t you want to surpass Lin Yang? Review well. Ask me if there’s anything you don’t know.”
Lin Yang was utterly speechless. “Wait, why do I have to be the target?”
Lin Xiu: “Set a small target first.”
Lin ‘Small Target’ Yang: “…” Your ‘big targets’ sure are high and mighty.
Half a month later, Lin Yang finally learned how a “Big Target” teaches someone to become a “Small Target.” The study atmosphere in Class 1 was already competitive enough, but ever since Lin Xiu joined evening self-study, Lin Yang felt distinctly greater pressure. However, this pressure didn’t come from others, but from the little fool behind him.
Watching the person who used to slack off become even more serious after Lin Xiu joined, Lin Yang felt immense pressure.
During evening self-study that day, Lin Yang scratched his head, finally unable to hold back. He turned to Chi Aibei. “Are you really planning to snatch my ninth-place spot?”
Chi Aibei watched him nearly tear his own hair out. He considered it for a moment. “Then I’ll snatch eighth place?”
Lin Yang: “…” No wonder they say you’re bad at math. Is there any difference?
Watching Lin Yang turn back in despair to frantically brush up on questions, Chi Aibei asked Lin Xiu, “Brother, is he angry?”
Lin Xiu: “Probably not. Do your problems.”
Lin Xiu hadn’t expected that Chi Aibei transferring to Class 1 would have the function of motivating the whole class to study. Previously, it was agreed that Chi Aibei’s grades wouldn’t count in the class ranking. But ever since his exam results came out last time, everyone seemed to sense a crisis. Everyone was secretly competing; no one wanted to be overtaken by Chi Aibei.
The teachers who originally didn’t want Chi Aibei to transfer to Class 1 now looked at him like a precious treasure. Even Chen Jiang came over every day to ask, “Is there anything you don’t understand?”
Lin Xiu couldn’t help glancing at Chi Aibei. Never mind Lin Yang; watching him be this serious, even Lin Xiu was a bit afraid of being caught by the little fool.
Chi Aibei had been very happy during evening self-study recently. Mainly because every night after school, he could go home with Lin Xiu. At first, he would ask if he could go with him, but by the second half of the month, he didn’t even ask. As soon as school ended, he shouldered his bag and left with Lin Xiu.
Another half month passed, and finally, it was the day of the final exams.
Based on previous grades, Chi Aibei was assigned to the very last exam hall. Lin Xiu walked him to the door of the exam room. “Do well. Don’t be nervous.”
Chi Aibei: “I’m not nervous.”
When it came to mentality, no one could beat Chi Aibei. He could digest even something like transmigrating into a book within two days, let alone a trivial matter like an exam.
Those assigned to this exam hall were all dead-last students. Seeing the top student appear here, they looked at him as if seeing a deity. Someone even prayed to Lin Xiu, wanting to borrow some luck, while others delusionally hoped to borrow some brains from him.
Lin Xiu handed the exam materials to Chi Aibei. Chi Aibei took the pencil case. “Brother, if I do well, can I have a reward?”
After the last exam, Lin Xiu was angry with him for a week, and he didn’t hear a single word of praise. Chi Aibei planned to secure the reward in advance this time.
Lin Xiu: “What reward do you want?”
Chi Aibei: “I haven’t thought of it yet.”
Lin Xiu pinched his cheek. “Then tell me when you’ve thought of it.”
Chi Aibei quickly asked, “Then the reward…”
Lin Xiu: “I promise you.”
When Lin Xiu left, he brushed past Qin Wanpeng, who was also in the last exam hall.
Being ignored, Qin Wanpeng was a bit annoyed. Although they weren’t close, they had met a few times and played ball together. Did he have to be so arrogant?
Entering the exam hall, Qin Wanpeng glanced at Chi Aibei sitting in the first row by the door. This seat was practically his exclusive spot. Because he loved talking to people when he was “silly,” they put him in the first row every exam to keep an eye on him.
Qin Wanpeng had just been ignored by Lin Xiu, and now Chi Aibei also acted like he didn’t see him, organizing his stationery without lifting his head.
Qin Wanpeng said sarcastically, “Let me see who this is. Isn’t this our classmate Chi Aibei? How did you get assigned to this exam hall?”
Although Chi Aibei’s grades from the last few times weren’t ranked, news had spread through the school. While the subject teachers didn’t question his grades, others didn’t feel the same. After all, he took the exams in Class 1, where scholars were everywhere. He could get good grades just by glancing around a few times.
Chi Aibei glanced at him. “Last time.”
Qin Wanpeng: “What last time?”
Chi Aibei: “Last time in this exam hall. I won’t come here again.”
Normally, Qin Wanpeng would have mocked him severely upon hearing this. But seeing that serious expression, the words on the tip of his tongue couldn’t come out. Such a Chi Aibei made him feel a strange loneliness, giving him the feeling that this really was the last time he would appear in this exam hall.
Qin Wanpeng seemed to understand a bit why He Chenjiang suddenly started attending evening self-study. Being looked down upon by the little fool really didn’t feel good.
Qin Wanpeng looked at Chi Aibei, who seemed like a different person since transferring to Class 1. “Feels good being chased by Old He, doesn’t it? After so many years, you finally waited until he was willing to look at you.”
Chi Aibei lifted his head, staring unblinkingly at Qin Wanpeng.
Qin Wanpeng felt uncomfortable under his gaze. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Chi Aibei: “Do you like He Chenjiang?”
“…” Even if Qin Wanpeng grew a hundred heads, he wouldn’t have guessed Chi Aibei would ask such a question. He was straight, damn it! What kind of joke was this!
Qin Wanpeng: “You’re f*cking bull—”
The homeroom teacher of Class 7 came in just then. Hearing Qin Wanpeng starting with profanity, she raised her hand and smacked the back of his head. “What are you doing? Don’t you know the exam is starting?”
Qin Wanpeng clutched the back of his head and turned around. The words on his lips were slapped back in.
The Class 7 teacher looked at Chi Aibei, her mood somewhat complex.
She had taught Chi Aibei for over a year and always felt this child was a hot potato. When she knew he was transferring to Class 1, she was genuinely happy from the bottom of her heart. But who could have guessed that the little fool who only scored thirty points in her hands would become a potential stock in the eyes of all Class 1 teachers as soon as he changed hands? It made her look incompetent!
The Class 7 teacher shoved Qin Wanpeng. “Go back to your seat.”
The exam began. The Class 7 teacher subconsciously observed Chi Aibei. Watching Chi Aibei answer the paper seriously, she had to admit this child really was different from when he was in Class 7.
Chi Aibei was more serious this time than any previous exam because he didn’t want Lin Xiu to send him to the exam hall next time. He wanted to be in the same exam hall as Lin Xiu.
