Chapter 68
On the day school started, after Lin Xiu sent Chi Aibei to Chen Jiang’s office, he returned to the classroom alone.
Class 1 and Class 2 were on opposite sides of the stairs. Previously, Lin Xiu didn’t feel the two classes were very far apart, but today the path felt a bit long. He stood at the door of Class 1 looking toward Class 2 for a long time without entering.
“Study God!” Lin Yang had already arrived. Seeing Lin Xiu standing at the door and not knowing what he was looking at, he called out to him.
Lin Xiu walked in. Lin Yang was still stretching his neck to look behind him. He looked for a long time but didn’t see Chi Aibei. Usually, that kid followed Lin Xiu everywhere.
Jiang Yu asked, “Where’s Chi Aibei?”
Lin Xiu put down his schoolbag. “He went to Class 2.”
Lin Yang: “What’s he doing in Class 2? Looking for someone?”
Lin Xiu told them about Chi Aibei transferring to the Liberal Arts class. After hearing it, Jiang Yu was stunned. “Transferring to Liberal Arts in the second semester of the third year? What was he thinking?”
Rather than being curious about what he was thinking, Lin Yang was more angry that he hadn’t said anything about such a big matter. “He’s so thoughtless! Not even a word about such a major thing!”
Lin Xiu didn’t think Chi Aibei had deliberately kept it from them; he most likely hadn’t taken it seriously. “He probably forgot.”
Lin Yang was quite angry. He felt Chi Aibei was a bad friend and grumbled about going to settle the score with him. Just then, the bell rang.
Chen Jiang walked in. “Everyone is here, right? I have an announcement. Our classmate Chi Aibei has transferred to Class 2 starting today. Although he’s no longer in our class, his grades are still here. I hope you won’t be left too far behind by him.”
Hearing this news, the reaction of the whole class was the same as Jiang Yu’s.
“Class 2?”
“Isn’t Class 2 the Liberal Arts class?”
“Transferring to Liberal Arts in the second semester of the third year?”
Lin Xiu glanced at the empty seat beside him. He hadn’t realized that the position felt so quiet with one person missing.
Similarly, He Chenjiang, who had just found out about Chi Aibei transferring, looked blankly at the empty seat by the window.
In the past, Chi Aibei always followed him around, and he had tried every possible way to avoid him. Now, things were reversed—he had followed Chi Aibei to Class 1, but Chi Aibei had gone to Class 2. Did he really not want to be in the same class as him that much?
…
After the first class ended, Jiang Yu and Lin Yang went with Lin Xiu to Class 2 to find Chi Aibei.
Chi Aibei had been led into the classroom by the Class 2 headteacher. Knowing he had transferred to Class 2, the reaction of the Class 2 students was the same as Class 1, but beyond that, they were mostly curious about Chi Aibei.
As soon as class ended, Chi Aibei’s seat was surrounded by people. Clearly, his popularity in Class 2 was higher than when he first arrived in Class 1.
Lin Yang called out to Chi Aibei from the door. Chi Aibei stood up. “Gege!”
The students of Class 2 looked at the two great gods standing at their classroom door, their spirits crushed once again. Their Class 2 was truly blessed by Buddha today!
Lin Yang immediately started throwing a flurry of light punches. Lin Xiu shielded Chi Aibei behind him, but he still couldn’t escape the wave of complaints.
Even the “pacifist” Jiang Yu helped Lin Yang this time, saying he was a bad friend. Out of the three, only Lin Xiu wasn’t there to scold him.
Lin Xiu asked, “How’s Class 2? Are you used to it?”
Chi Aibei nodded. “My deskmate is the class monitor. He’s very nice. Gege, what about you? Who’s your deskmate now?”
From Chi Aibei’s level of happiness, Lin Xiu knew he wasn’t lying. It made sense; with his personality, he could get along with anyone. There was no need to worry he wouldn’t fit in.
Lin Yang was still angry. “He doesn’t have a deskmate! Didn’t his deskmate leave? Ungrateful! Heartless!”
Chen Jiang had intended to arrange a new deskmate for Lin Xiu, but Lin Xiu didn’t want one. He said he wanted a desk to himself. And even if he hadn’t said it, no one in the class wanted to sit in that spot caught between two Study Gods. They weren’t Chi Aibei; they couldn’t move with ease between two devils while simultaneously raising their grades to that level.
Lin Xiu gave Lin Yang a warning look, telling him not to talk nonsense.
Lin Yang was still quite afraid of Lin Xiu, especially when Lin Xiu was cold-faced. He looked even scarier than the fierce-looking Jiang Yu. Lin Yang pursed his lips. “You’re treating us to lunch. Consider it punishment for keeping us in the dark for so long.”
He Chenjiang stood at the door of Class 1. Qin Wanpeng came over from Class 7 and looked in the direction of his gaze. “What are you looking at? Hey, isn’t that the little fool? What’s he doing over at Class 2?”
He Chenjiang: “He transferred classes.”
“Again?” Qin Wanpeng said in surprise. “It’s already the second semester of the third year. What’s he trying to do by transferring around?”
Seeing He Chenjiang staring at Class 2, Qin Wanpeng felt a numbness in his brain. “You wouldn’t be thinking of transferring to Class 2 as well, would you?”
He Chenjiang lowered his eyes. “No.”
He wanted to go, but rather than transferring, he wanted to raise his grades more. There was only half a year left of high school. Rather than following him to Class 2, it was better to get into the same university as Chi Aibei.
High school life seemed to consist only of eating, sleeping, and working from dawn to dusk. Chi Aibei was truly the “King of Involution.” Every time Lin Yang and the others came to find him for lunch, he was busy writing papers.
On this day at noon, everyone in Class 2 had left, but Chi Aibei was still writing furiously. “Wait for me a bit more. I’m almost done.”
The three from Class 1 stood in the Class 2 classroom waiting for Chi Aibei. A girl from Class 2 returned to the classroom to get something and was startled at the door.
The three of them standing there made it look like they were bullying Chi Aibei. If Chi Aibei hadn’t stood up and smiled at them, the girl almost would have called a teacher.
On the way to the cafeteria, Lin Yang joked, “Looking at your momentum, it seems surpassing me as ninth in the grade isn’t enough. Are you planning to take Jiang Yu’s second place in the next exam?”
Chi Aibei glanced at Jiang Yu. Jiang Yu felt his scalp tingle. “Impossible!”
Jiang Yu looked at Chi Aibei warily. It was fine if he couldn’t beat Lin Xiu, but was his position about to be usurped by Chi Aibei too? But thinking carefully about Chi Aibei’s grades, which were better every single time, Jiang Yu suddenly lost his appetite for lunch.
Chi Aibei: “Why is it impossible?”
Jiang Yu: “…”
The news of Chi Aibei wanting to usurp the position somehow spread to Class 1. Jiang Yu entered “Frenzy Mode” that afternoon, leading the entire Class 1 into a strange cycle of intense “involution.”
During breaks, students from other classes passing by the door of Class 1 thought the bell earlier had been an auditory hallucination. There wasn’t even a teacher in the classroom!
Class 1 had started “involuting,” and Class 2 was not to be outdone. All the teachers hadn’t expected that one Chi Aibei would trigger an involution war between two classes. Now, besides Lin Xiu and Chi Aibei, almost no one left the classroom during breaks. And these two only left the classroom to visit each other’s classes.
As the time for the Gaokao grew shorter and shorter, Chi Wendong arranged for a driver to pick up and drop off Chi Aibei and Lin Xiu every day. But even so, Chi Aibei still felt there wasn’t enough time, and his bedtime every night was pushed later and later.
During the final mock exam, Chi Aibei had successfully counterattacked from being third in the class to first in the class, with a total score only one point lower than Jiang Yu’s.
An unprecedented pressure hit Jiang Yu. Jiang Yu didn’t know if Lin Xiu had also felt as terrified as he did every day back when he used to say he would beat Lin Xiu.
At night, Lin Xiu took away Chi Aibei’s paper. “Sleep.”
Chi Aibei reached out to grab it. “I’ll sleep in a bit.”
Lin Xiu held the paper high. “Sleep now.”
Chi Aibei had been staying up too hard lately. Lin Xiu was afraid that if he continued like this, he would fall ill before the Gaokao even arrived.
Lin Xiu took the paper and went to the next room. Just as Chi Aibei was about to secretly dig out another paper from his schoolbag, Lin Xiu turned back.
Looking at the pillow in Lin Xiu’s hand, Chi Aibei was stunned. “Gege, what are you doing?”
Lin Xiu knew he had guessed correctly after seeing his movements. This kid never followed orders. He threw the pillow onto the bed. “Sleep. Don’t make me say it a third time.”
Chi Aibei immediately climbed onto the bed and looked at Lin Xiu with a grin. “Gege, are you sleeping here?”
Lin Xiu: “Otherwise, as soon as I leave, you’ll climb back up to read. People who don’t know better would think you’re trying to become the God of Literature.”
Chi Aibei hadn’t slept with Lin Xiu for a long time, mainly because Lin Xiu disliked how he was restless in his sleep.
Chi Aibei was truly tired. He originally wanted to chat with Lin Xiu for a bit, but as soon as the lights were out, he fell asleep.
Chi Aibei was asleep, but Lin Xiu found himself unable to sleep. Listening to the steady breathing beside him, Lin Xiu turned on his side. In the dim light, he could barely make out Chi Aibei’s face. Because of his appearance, the road after his rebirth had been smooth all the way, even giving him the feeling that things would continue to be successful in the future.
“Gege…” Chi Aibei murmured in his dream. “This question… choose B.”
Lin Xiu smiled. “Stop choosing. Go to sleep.”
The night passed, and Lin Xiu was unharmed. He glanced at Chi Aibei, who hadn’t woken up yet. He truly was exhausted—so exhausted he didn’t even “host a martial arts assembly” in his sleep. He was actually quite well-behaved.
One week before the Gaokao, Chi Aibei broke his routine and stopped reading at home. He told Lin Xiu he wanted to go to the nursing home to see Grandma. Coincidentally, Lin Xiu had also planned to go.
In his previous life, Grandma Lin passed away on the day of Lin Xiu’s Gaokao. Part of it was because of Lin Weimin, and part was because Grandma hadn’t received good care while she was sick. Seeing the old lady now with a glowing complexion and wishing them luck in the exams, Chi Aibei finally felt at ease.
As long as Lin Xiu smoothly participated in the Gaokao, his future development would no longer be the same as in the novel. He would have his own life and a lifetime of success.
On the day of the Gaokao, Chi Wendong personally sent them to the examination center. Shen Yicheng also came with the people from the boxing gym. The ridiculous thing was that they had made two of the gym members with relatively slender figures wear cheongsams.
Chi Aibei nearly doubled over with laughter upon seeing them.
The school gate was crowded with parents seeing off the candidates. There were quite a few people wearing cheongsams, but seeing men wearing them drew a lot of attention.
Shen Yicheng: “Take the exam well and don’t be nervous. We’ll wait for you here. We’ll take you to dinner after it’s over.”
Chen Fei saw that the Gaokao scene was so large and felt a bit excited. His stride was a bit too wide, and—riiiiip—the cheongsam tore.
The surrounding people were silent for a few seconds. Lin Xiu pulled Chi Aibei and turned to leave. “Quickly, let’s go. It’s embarrassing.”
Chen Fei clutched his thigh. “Hey, holy crap! This thing is too flimsy.”
Chi Aibei was almost dying of laughter. He was dragged away by Lin Xiu, laughing all the way.
After entering the school gate, Lin Xiu asked Chi Aibei, “Nervous?”
Chi Aibei wiped away the tears he had laughed out and shook his head. His psychological resilience had always been good. He had even managed to digest the fact of his transmigration within two days, let alone a small exam.
Chi Aibei: “Gege, did you call Grandma this morning?”
The closer the Gaokao came, the more Chi Aibei cared about Grandma. Lin Xiu vaguely sensed something. “I called. The nurse said Grandma’s condition is very good. Don’t worry.”
Chi Aibei nodded. “Gege, you will definitely get a good score.”
Lin Xiu smiled. “You too.”
The two weren’t in the same examination room. Before they separated, Chi Aibei gave Lin Xiu a hug. “Gege, fighting!”
Lin Xiu circled him, his chin lightly rubbing against the top of his head. “Fighting.”
