Chapter 11: He Suddenly Understood His Intentions
After all, it was late at night. Transporting a corpse wasn’t exactly convenient. Zhang Chulan felt a twinge of regret for refusing Xu San too early.
After untold hardships, plus the painful temptation of spending money, Zhang Chulan finally transported Zhang Xilin back.
Early the next morning, he rushed to bury the person.
“Grandpa… now you can really rest in peace.” Zhang Chulan covered the grave with the last shovel of dirt.
Sweat was pouring densely from his back, hot and uncomfortable. Just as he was about to stand up and take a breather…
He turned his head and found several figures standing at the bottom of the slope.
Under the quiet moonlight, the blurry figures moved toward Zhang Chulan and Chi Wu. The distance closing instantly was incredibly eerie.
Zhang Chulan immediately grabbed Chi Wu’s wrist: “Run!”
Chi Wu stumbled from the pull. The two ran forward quickly. Walking under the moonlight was difficult, and the pursuers behind caught up rapidly.
Catching up wasn’t enough; they were also channeling qi to attack the two. Clusters of qi flew swish swish like sword shadows.
“Holy grass, is there no end to this!”
Watching Zhang Chulan dodge left and right, he was actually trying his best to protect Chi Wu, so all the attacks immediately went toward Chi Wu.
Zhang Chulan couldn’t defend against everything. Suddenly, he reached out and chopped the back of Chi Wu’s neck.
Chi Wu let out an inaudible sigh, then collapsed into his arms.
“Zhang Chulan, you can’t escape.”
“Is that so?” Zhang Chulan clicked his tongue, looked at the newcomer, and raised his right eyebrow sarcastically.
“I actually want to ask, what exactly do you want with me?”
“Stop playing dumb. Hand over the Origin of Qi your grandfather passed to you.”
The leading black shadow stepped out. Zhang Chulan finally realized these people were wearing masks.
“I don’t know a damn thing about what you’re talking about. My grandpa never passed that stuff to me.”
“Heh… whether he passed it or not, we’ll verify it personally.” The black shadow tilted the corner of his mouth, his voice cold and ruthless.
“Now the whole world knows about your business. If you don’t give it to us, it’ll just benefit someone else. I advise you to be sensible.”
” Chi —” Zhang Chulan gave a short laugh, blood rushing up as he furrowed his brows.
“Just based on you trash who can’t show your faces?”
“You even know to wear masks, so you know you have no face, right? You want to rob someone else’s stuff, yet you’re here babbling with high-sounding excuses. Stop pretending to be a big-tailed wolf.”
“Refusing a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit!”
The black shadow charged at Zhang Chulan. The other two wanted to charge as well but found they couldn’t move at all.
“Profournd heaven and earth…” Zhang Chulan invoked the Golden Light Mantra to protect his body.
The black shadow was bounced back, but in the next second, he let out a “Heh” laugh.
“Little kid, this bit won’t stump me.”
Zhang Chulan dodged while holding Chi Wu. Two seconds later, his Golden Light was chopped to pieces.
“Gone?” Zhang Chulan was horrified. He stared at the black shadow charging again and took a deep glance at Chi Wu in his arms.
He swept a Palm Thunder toward the black shadow.
“Palm Thunder? You know Lightning Arts?” A flash of surprise crossed the black shadow’s face, but a moment later he sneered.
“But it’s too immat…”
Why can’t I move?
Seeing that he couldn’t move, the black shadow mobilized his defensive skills. But he found he really couldn’t move a muscle, as if something was pressing firmly on his shoulders, pinning him there.
“What are you two staring at?! Why aren’t you coming up to help me?!”
Zhang Chulan didn’t know this old geezer was fighting, so why did he suddenly stand there motionless?
Did his brain short-circuit?
But this person wasn’t weak, and the other two hadn’t attacked yet. Chi Wu was still in his arms. After landing a palm strike, he immediately ran swish swish holding Chi Wu.
Chi Wu bumped up and down in his arms.
“Put me down…”
“Eh?” Zhang Chulan ran covered in sweat, not daring to stop for a moment.
Seeing Chi Wu wake up, he pretended not to hear him, feigning nonchalance as he joked.
“Wubao be good, we are running for our lives.”
He didn’t let go. Chi Wu felt terrible, but he wasn’t willing to use the moves he used on others on Zhang Chulan.
He could only endure the dizziness from the shaking.
Zhang Chulan couldn’t take it anymore halfway through, persisting purely on willpower.
And he absolutely refused to listen to Chi Wu’s advice, as if Chi Wu’s advice was asking him to drink arsenic.
The sky turned a hazy bright. After the first rooster crowed, the crowing continued in short bursts, then faded away. The elderly, who slept little, were already up.
Grandma Zhao, with a beauty-tip hairline, a melon-seed face, and a thin frame, was pouring out face-washing water from a red basin. Seeing the sweating Zhang Chulan, she let out a surprised “Ah.”
“Aiyou, Lan-wa’zi (Baby Lan), what have you been up to? You look like a mud monkey.”
Zhang Chulan waved his hand, unable to speak.
He put Chi Wu on the ground and sat down on his butt, panting heavily like a fish out of water.
His heart was pounding thump thump non-stop. He didn’t even need to try to feel the trembling beats.
“Running for my life,” Zhang Chulan wheezed, breathing through his mouth hoo hoo, his throat about to smoke.
“You child, don’t joke with me.” Grandma Zhao laughed, then poured two cups of tea from the house and handed one to each of them.
“Drink tea, drink tea.”
“Thanks.”
Zhang Chulan reached out and took both cups, receiving a side-eye from Grandma Zhao.
“Why are you grabbing his? There’s plenty of tea. If you finish, I’ll pour you more.”
“He doesn’t like tea.” Zhang Chulan gave a simple laugh, then stunned himself.
Chi Wu didn’t like to drink tea, yet there was always a dry, clear scent of tea leaves on his body.
It smelled exceptionally comfortable.
“So he doesn’t like it…” Grandma Zhao was also a bit embarrassed, a few shades of shy hospitality appearing on her face.
“But the house only has tea, no plain boiled water or anything.”
Grandma Zhao didn’t like drinking it either. Her old man loved it. She didn’t like drinking water; she just drank some soup during meals, for which her granddaughter nagged her many times.
Something about kidney stones, and chanting about drinking eight glasses of water a day.
“It’s okay, Grandma, I’m not thirsty. Thank you.” Chi Wu spoke up from the side, his eyes scanning the shops on the street.
They hadn’t opened yet.
People in the village went to the street according to schedule. Except for “market days,” few people came. With little income, every family grew their own vegetables, and basically, no one lived entirely by spending money.
“Poor hospitality, poor hospitality.” Grandma Zhao smiled embarrassedly. Remembering something, she fished out a few pieces of Sachima from the house.
“Eat this. My granddaughter bought it for me. It’s tasty.”
Zhang Chulan grinned: “Alright, alright.” As he spoke, he downed both cups of tea.
The two sat in the old lady’s courtyard for a while, watching the old person lay out peanuts, take out walnut milk, and finally bring out a jar of yellow peaches.
She even started preparing to wash rice to cook.
“…Grandma, stop busy-ing yourself. The early bus is coming, we have to go.”
Even though Zhang Chulan was thick-skinned, he felt a bit awkward facing this kind of rustic enthusiasm.
He didn’t consider himself a good person, and in necessary moments he lacked morals, but faced with extreme simplicity, he felt powerless.
“Aiyou, what’s the rush? Leave after eating…”
Grandma Zhao stopped talking as she spoke. The bus had already appeared around the corner and honked its horn to signal.
“Grandma, just cook for yourselves. Thanks for the hospitality.”
Zhang Chulan washed the two cups and quickly dragged Chi Wu toward the bus.
“It’s open.” Chi Wu pointed to a certain shop.
Zhang Chulan looked over and suddenly understood his intentions.
