Chapter 14: The Ball That Fakes Accidents
This was the most flavorless meal Zhang Chulan had ever eaten. In the past—after his grandfather died, his mother passed away, and his father disappeared—he had become an orphan at seven and simply had nothing to eat.
But this meal… the food was laid out on the table, and as the host, it was entirely inappropriate for him to keep such a long face.
Besides, he had a bit of an idea.
Zhang Chulan grinned, the expression somewhat involuntary yet deliberate.
“Daoist Master, it just so happens I’ve never been to Wudang either. Since you’re taking Wubao back to visit the elders, I’ll tag along and have some fun for a few days.”
“Sure, Wudang welcomes you,” Wang Ye replied with a smile.
He moved his chopsticks and placed a serving of garlic shoots into Chi Wu’s bowl. There was none of the usual polite hesitation of “serving someone only vegetables”; instead, the gesture carried a familiarity that allowed no refusal.
It was as if the polite, distant, and proper demeanor he had shown Zhang Chulan and Feng Baobao earlier was simply because they weren’t close.
Most importantly, Chi Wu didn’t refuse.
Zhang Chulan inexplicably felt like he had lost. He reached under the table and seized Chi Wu’s wrist.
He even used a bit of force.
Chi Wu picked up the garlic shoots from his bowl, took a bite, and glanced at Zhang Chulan, his face filled with baffled confusion.
“What’s wrong?”
Watching Chi Wu eat that mouthful of garlic shoots, Zhang Chulan felt like he’d been pricked by a needle. He even felt as if the whole world had turned green. The urge he had earlier to act spoiled and tease the other completely died out.
What the hell was he thinking?
Why was he acting so gay?
Chi Wu was his brother, not his wife.
“Pass me the tea, would you?” He laughed, spouting nonsense to pretend nothing was wrong, though a stormy sea was raging in his heart.
Could it be that hanging out with Chi Wu all the time, and listening to everyone’s teasing, had actually subliminally altered his sexual orientation?
That couldn’t be.
If he really changed, his grandfather would crawl out of his grave to beat him to death.
Even his mother, who had passed away years ago, might be angered back to life.
His thoughts flew wildly, but he immediately sat up straight and smiled again. “I was just joking just now. It’s hard to get time off.”
“That really is a pity.” Wang Ye seemed to find this amusing.
“But I remember university classes being quite sparse. Is your schedule very tight?”
“…” Zhang Chulan hadn’t expected Wang Ye to expose his bluff right to his face. However, he knew Chi Wu wouldn’t expose him, so he continued to bullshit.
“Our major is a bit eccentric.”
“Is that so?” Wang Ye nodded, indicating he understood.
He then glanced at Chi Wu and placed a slice of cured meat in his bowl. “That must be tough.”
“You guys are so slow at eating.” Feng Baobao had already polished off two large bowls of rice and cleared a plate of shredded pork with garlic sauce all by herself.
Zhang Chulan turned to Feng Baobao. Seeing her mouth full of fragrance and red oil, the corner of his mouth twitched.
“Sister Bao, as long as you eat well, don’t worry about us.”
“Alright then.” Feng Baobao seemed to just be casually complaining, continuing to shovel food into her mouth.
The crunch, crunch of her chewing became the background noise.
Wang Ye didn’t seem accustomed to the local water or perhaps the food didn’t suit his palate; he didn’t eat much. Instead, he spent more time serving food to Chi Wu.
Chi Wu didn’t eat much due to carsickness. He barely picked up any food himself; everything he ate was served by Wang Ye.
“I’m full.” Chi Wu finally refused Wang Ye’s feeding, his tone extremely natural.
“Senior Brother, you should eat.”
Ever since Chi Wu could remember, he noticed Wang Ye liked to feed him. It was a long time later that he learned a word for it.
Feederism.
Wang Ye looked at Chi Wu’s empty bowl and asked with a tone that sounded slightly regretful.
“Done eating?”
“Done.”
Receiving this affirmative answer, Wang Ye smiled. He even extended a hand, seemingly wanting to ruffle Chi Wu’s hair as a reward, but the hand that reached out was quickly retracted.
He glanced at that hand with a strange expression, the corners of his mouth twitching.
In the beginning, Wang Ye, a child himself, was clumsy, chaotic, and even reluctant when taking care of another child.
But the initial Chi Wu was like a lump of dough, allowing anyone to shape him round or flat, and Wang Ye gradually found a bit of fun in it.
Even so, Wang Ye always felt that what sustained him was a sense of responsibility.
But…
After so many years, he still couldn’t help but want to be close to Chi Wu again. That didn’t make sense.
Chi Wu was like a vortex.
He had noticed this before; there was an indescribable magic around this Junior Brother of his.
Back then, Chi Wu was expelled from Wudang after entering the orphanage. Yet this time, the Sect Leader had actually instructed him to bring the person back, and his expression had been unusually grave when giving the order.
Wang Ye couldn’t figure it out.
Feng Baobao was the first to start eating and the last to put down her chopsticks. Of the four people present, only she had treated this meal seriously; her plate was basically clean.
“So full, burp…” Feng Baobao touched her slightly protruding belly. She straightened up, seemingly amazed, her eyes widening involuntarily.
She waved goodbye to Zhang Chulan. “Thanks for the meal. But you better consider it quickly. Two forces are eyeing you right now.”
“Mn…” Even though the sky was getting a bit dark, and Feng Baobao was just a girl, Zhang Chulan didn’t offer to walk her home, because she absolutely didn’t need it.
However, Zhang Chulan still offered the necessary advice.
“Then walk carefully, don’t run into any telephone poles.”
“Got it.” Feng Baobao waved her hand without looking back.
“Then I’ll take my leave as well,” Wang Ye said, then seemed to notice something.
He suddenly closed the distance with Chi Wu, reaching out to point at a grease stain on the left side of his chest. “It’s dirty.”
The warm breath the other exhaled was a bit toasty. Chi Wu, unaccustomed to it, took a step back.
“It’ll be fine once I wash it.”
Wang Ye’s eyes darkened slightly. He seemed to find Chi Wu’s half-step retreat somewhat novel.
“Junior Brother has really become distant with Senior Brother.”
He leaned forward again, carrying a hint of aggression. “Do you blame Senior Brother for not looking for you all these years?”
“How could I?” Chi Wu’s spine stiffened slightly.
There were very few people in this world he feared, but Wang Ye counted as one. Back then, he was too young and didn’t know how to hide.
“That is good then.” Wang Ye retreated a step, as if he had finally found something familiar.
He waved at Zhang Chulan again, looking quite cheerful. “See you around, Old Zhang.”
Zhang Chulan thought, Since when am I so close with you? But on the surface, he smiled brightly.
“Take care, Old Wang.”
The moment Wang Ye turned around, Zhang Chulan dragged Chi Wu toward the school gate.
“Still looking? He’s gone far away.”
“…” Didn’t he just turn around? Chi Wu thought about it but decided not to argue.
Zhang Chulan was tight-fisted. Having spent a fortune today, he must be in a bad mood, and he hadn’t eaten much at the table either.
Better not hold it against him.
Chi Wu bought a bucket of instant noodles from the vending machine at the dorm entrance.
Zhang Chulan didn’t stop him, but was quite surprised. “Don’t you like sour and spicy? Why buy the spicy one?”
“Just felt like buying it.”
“Alright then.” Zhang Chulan didn’t ask further. The two turned toward the dorms, but just as they reached the corner, a person suddenly rushed out, bumped into Chi Wu, cried “Ouch,” and sprawled onto the ground.
They even lay there motionless.
Zhang Chulan looked at the person—nearly 1.8 meters tall but with long blonde hair covering the floor, gender indistinguishable. He thought to himself, This scammer is really dedicated.
