Chapter 47: Art Piece
Fu Jingchen toyed with the fountain pen in his hand.
“Pei Lian, a doctor shouldn’t have extra thoughts.”
His indifferent gaze swept over the playful intent in the eyes of the man opposite him.
“I asked for your help in an emergency, not for you to add the patientās family on WeChat.”
Fu Jingchen took off his glasses and wiped the lenses with a handkerchief. A blade-like chill seeped into his tone.
The man let out a careless, low laugh. As his Adam’s apple rolled, the veins on his neck became faintly visible.
“What are you saying, President Fu?”
He tilted his head against the back of the chair, a few buttons of his white shirt undone to reveal a patch of cold-white collarbone.
“I simply saw that Miss Ruan was exceptionally concerned about her motherās condition and left a contact method for easier communication later.”
Fu Jingchenās jaw tightened. The fountain pen was slapped onto the desk, splashing tiny ink spots. His suited figure became increasingly oppressive in the light and shadow.
“Weāve known each other for over ten years, right? This is the first time Iāve seen you take an interest in a case.”
“Do I need to remind you? These were Dr. Peiās wordsā’Living people are never as attractive as specimens.'”
Fu Jingchen set his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose, a threat flashing in the dark eyes behind the lenses.
“You wrong me by saying that, President Fu.”
The man chuckled, though the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“The cause of Miss Ruanās motherās case is unknown, and the situation was dire when the episode occurred. I simply want to follow up on the patient’s case for research.”
He suddenly leaned forward, a teasing arc curling on his lips. “As for you, President Fu, why are you so nervous? Could it be…?”
His words came to a dead stop, carrying an unfinished implication.
“I like her. I am pursuing her.”
The man’s voice was as cold as an ice pick, completely unbothered by the ridicule in Pei Lian’s words.
This shell, which was always elegant and composed, seemed to have cracked at a certain moment.
Pei Lianās pupils contracted. He couldn’t believe he would hear such words from this manās mouth in his lifetime.
So this hypocritical “gentleman” could also show such an expression.
The office fell into a dead silence.
“Pursuing her… by running off to be her stepdad?”
The next second, the man burst into laughter. The office was instantly filled with his clear, mocking laugh.
“You investigated.”
Fu Jingchenās brow furrowed slightly. He knew Pei Lian never cared about any rumors among the wealthy clans.
“Pei Lian, remember your status. Do what is within a doctor’s duties. As for the rest, do not cross the line.”
The manās tone was cold enough to freeze.
Pei Lian stood up and fastened the top button of his shirt. His fingertips hovered over the door handle as he chuckled.
“Rest assured, I always keep business and personal matters separate.”
The moment the glass door was pushed open, Pei Lian suddenly looked back.
“But Fu Jingchenā” His voice lowered.
“Being interested in the case was indeed a lie.”
But as for certain people…
After all, he originally thought that in his life, only those organs and nerve tissues soaked in glass jars would make a nearly devout light surface in his eyes.
But then he met the worldās…
Most perfect art pieceāwithout exception.
The scene that made his blood boil had already been sketched in his mind.
Peel away her warm skin and see with his own eyes what kind of organs support such a vivid and lovely life.
Place her in a specialized glass container, her snow-white skin glowing with a luster more dazzling than pearls in the transparent solution.
Watch her hair spread gently in the liquid, her eyes never to close again, like a pinned butterfly.
The girl’s perfect body wouldn’t need any extra clothing to present the most beautiful human curves in the world.
That shuddering sensation crawling from his spine to his neck was exactly the same as the excitement he felt as a child when he first saw a heart taken out of a body, yet still beating.
When the preservative fluid completely permeated every inch of her skin, she would be frozen forever in that moment, never to age, never to rot.
She would become an eternal piece of art.
Such thoughts made the manās throat tighten and his breathing ragged. A certain place under his trousers reacted strongly, the fabric seeming as if it might tear.
Pei Lian took out the phone in his pocket and licked his dry lips, a morbid arc curling on his mouth.
[Doctor, what is your last name?]
[Doctor, doctor, why aren’t you answering me?]
[Once my momās report comes out, can I consult with you in detail?]
[Doctor, doctor, I’m a friend of Fu Jingchen’s! Please answer me.]
Pei Lian hadn’t replied to the girl’s messages last night. After all, having experienced an unprecedented thrill, how could he stop the movements of his hands?
Looking at the message where the girl specifically emphasized her connection to Fu Jingchen, Pei Lianās eyes narrowed even further.
A perfect art piece shouldn’t be tainted by anyone else’s scent. That would be destruction.
His slender fingers fell quickly on the keyboard, but the message he sent was restrained to near-perfection.
“Pei Lian, Associate Director of Neurosurgery at Vita Nexus Medical Center. Once the test results for Miss Ruanās mother are out, we can find a time to discuss them in detail at the hospital.”
Ruan Yi hesitated as she looked at “Neurosurgery” on the screen.
Isn’t that the department for opening skulls and using knives?
After some deliberation, she still pressed the send button.
“Dr. Pei, my mom mainly has symptoms of loss of control and hallucinations. Wouldn’t the psychiatry department be more appropriate?”
“Or perhaps I could trouble you to recommend some reliable psychiatric experts.”
Less than ten seconds after the send button was pressed, a reply popped up in the dialogue box.
“I hold double doctorates in Neurobiology and Psychiatry from Cambridge University, am a member of the International Psychopathology Research Group, and have co-edited the mental illness diagnosis manual.”
Ruan Yi froze at this string of introductions. She marveled at where Fu Jingchen found such people before remembering he was the big boss of NovaVoy.
Dr. Pei is handsome and kind-hearted. What a good person.
“Okay! Thank you so much, Dr. Pei. I’ll contact you as soon as the test results are out.”
After sending it, Ruan Yi didn’t forget to add a few flattering emojis.
The hand holding the coffee cup paused in mid-air. Pei Lian looked at the flattering words on the screen and took a light sip of coffee, a soft chuckle escaping his throat.
The taste of being flattered by his future perfect art piece… seemed quite good.
A strange numbness surged in his chest.
The man let out a low laugh, his fingertips unconsciously stroking the edge of the phone.
The code lock emitted a light “beep,” and the heavy iron door of the basement slowly opened.
The man placed the newly received manila envelope in the center of the workbench and slowly peeled off the tape.
When the first photo slid into his palm, his hand holding the scalpel suddenly tightened.
In the image, the girl was standing on the balcony in a nightgown, the sunlight casting a pinkish glow on her bare shoulders and neck.
Her slender waist curved into a seductive arc as she stretched, her nightgown strap slipping half an inch, faintly revealing the snowy skin of her chest.
The man’s Adam’s apple rolled as his fingertips brushed over the photo, as if he could touch real warmth.
The second photo slid out immediately after. The car door was half-open as the girl got out, her fair leg extending, her pale pink kitten heels about to touch the ground.
The man pinned the balcony photo to the wall of the basement where the human anatomy chart was located.
A sharp thumbtack pierced the paper, the balcony photo covering the heart area of the massive human anatomical diagram.
As for that photo of her getting out of the car, he deliberately pinned it over the pelvic region, the girlās curved calf exactly covering the anatomical illustration of the femur.
As more photos were pinned, the medical charts on the wall were gradually swallowed by the vivid silhouette of the young girl.
The photos he had people collect weren’t many yet.
“Soon… the entire wall will be your exclusive display case.”
A collection in the name of a “perfect art piece” had long since surpassed the scope of medical research.
It had evolved into a bone-chilling ritual of madness, filled with a predatory desire for possession.
