Chapter 103: Meeting Again
“I suddenly hate myself a little.”
Gu Wanrong, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly spoke. Her voice was quiet, but Tong Shenba heard it clearly.
The sentence also drifted clearly to the ears of Xie Xian, who stood alone not far away.
Today was Christmas Eve, a special day for Xie Xian. In previous years, he would spend this day alone doing extreme sportsâbungee jumping, racing, paragliding, rock climbingâanything to feel a thrill.
But today, Xie Xian felt bored by those things, yet his heart was terribly restless. Coincidentally, someone from the Zhang family had invited him out. Although they weren’t close, he accepted.
Inside the private room, the group was laughing and joking. Zhang Zhiheng had been sticking to his side since he arrived. It was meant to relieve his boredom, but he only grew more annoyed.
Xie Xian had wandered into the garden to escape, only to see Gu Wanrong.
After leaving Rongcheng, Xie Xian should have returned to Beijing. But upon arriving there, he convinced himself that the Group’s new project in City J required his personal oversight, so he returned.
In City J, Xie Xian lived in Yunding Yazhu. He could see Gu Wanrong walking her cat every week.
Sometimes, they were only a few meters apart. He could have spoken to her. But every time, Xie Xian turned and walked away, afraid to approach.
late at night, thoughts of Gu Wanrong would invade his mind uncontrollably. As time passed, he was forced to recognize the truth of his own heartâhe had fallen in love with her.
But the clearer his feelings became, the more he wanted to stay away.
For Xie Xian, love meant misfortune. He didn’t need love; he loathed it. His heart didn’t need anyone.
So, he deliberately avoided places and times where he might run into her, cutting off any contact. He wanted to slowly retract his heart.
He numbed himself with work, wrapped himself in hatred, and filled his time with plans for revenge. Gradually, he thought her figure was fading from his mind.
However, today, an uncontrollable irritability had surged, making it impossible to focus on work.
He came to the Four Seas Club for the appointment, only to see the very woman who disturbed his peace.
Every time he saw Gu Wanrong, she carried a warm aura, like sunshine, making him want to draw closer. He had never felt a trace of negative emotion from her; she always seemed to cast off anything bad with ease.
But tonight, Gu Wanrong was unusual. She sat there, eyes lost and distracted, immersed in thoughts she couldn’t escape. Her brows were slightly furrowed, as if she were struggling to suppress the emotions within.
All of this made Xie Xian stop in his tracks, standing quietly in the distance, watching her.
The dim garden lights flickered, illuminating her beautiful but dejected face.
He watched as she seemed to merge with the dark night. For a moment, he felt he was seeing a lonely soul wandering the darkness, just like his own.
Until he heard her say she hated herself.
His body moved on its own, walking straight toward her.
“Instead of sitting here being sad alone, why don’t you come with me to vent?”
Xie Xian’s mind was blank; he only realized what he had said after the words left his mouth. He didn’t know why he said it, but in that moment, his only thought was to pull Gu Wanrong out of her self-loathing.
Gu Wanrong was startled. She blinked, her eyes full of confusion at his sudden appearance.
A second ago, she was letting herself spiral. Now, seeing Xie Xian clearly in front of her, her thoughts were thrown into chaos again.
Hasn’t he been deliberately keeping his distance?
What does he mean by suddenly appearing like this?
Wait, Yingying clearly told me Xie Xian was going to a friend’s party today. Why is he here?
And what did he just say?
…
“Coming?” Xie Xian looked at the dumbfounded girl and couldn’t help but issue the invitation again.
“Where to?” Gu Wanrong asked subconsciously, her mind still floating with unanswered questions.
“To a place where you can vent.” Xie Xian’s voice was soft, but it carried a magnetism that made refusal impossible.
Gu Wanrong hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
Xie Xian grabbed her wrist, pulled her up, led her out of the Four Seas Hotel, and put her into the black car he had driven there.
“Hey, Tong Shenba hasn’t come up yet!” Gu Wanrong exclaimed as she fastened her seatbelt. Xie Xian had already slammed on the gas, speeding away.
“Just tell her to follow from a distance,” Xie Xian said, holding the steering wheel and glancing sideways at her.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Gu Wanrong smelled a faint scent of alcohol in the air. It made her feel a little intoxicated, a little entranced. She turned to look at him and realized the scent was coming from him.
“You drank?” Gu Wanrong shivered, snapping out of her trance. Entranced by what? Don’t drink and drive!
Xie Xian narrowed his eyes slightly, glancing at her again. He saw her nervous expression, looking as if she might open the door and tuck-and-roll to escape a drunk driver.
“I didn’t drink. I just picked up the smell inside the club.”
Gu Wanrong breathed a sigh of relief, though she still gripped the seat. “That’s good. You can’t drive after drinking.”
Xie Xian chuckled low in his throat. “Don’t worry. I’m taking you out to vent, not to take your little life.”
Hearing this, a blush crept up Gu Wanrong’s face.
Her inner monologue began running wild:
Ahhh, Gu Wanrong, why are you losing your cool in front of him again!
His laugh sounds so good. A voice like rich red wineâthis counts as the first time I’ve really heard it.
Wait… I forgot Yu Yingying and the others! They’re still in the club!Â
