Chapter 152: Reunion Dinner (2)
Not everyone was happy to listen to Tong Zishan’s boastful words, especially the greasy lecturing.
“Let me teach you~”
“I’m promoted and getting rich~”
“Where~ where~”
Beside Gu Wanrong’s seat, two teenage girls began to mimic Tong Zishan’s tone of voice, then looked at each other.
“Blegh.” They were disgusted by the oiliness.
“Hahahaha, your mom should take you to learn acting.”
These two were great-grandchildren of Yao Zuzu’s family. As the only daughters of their respective families, they had basically no contact with the Gu family. It was likely they couldn’t even recognize all the relatives on the Gu side.
If they hadn’t called Yao Zuzu “Zuzu,” Gu Wanrong wouldn’t have been able to place them or know whose children they were.
Attracted by their sarcastic behavior, Gu Wanrong couldn’t help but smile. This smile, however, was misunderstood by Tong Zishan, who thought Gu Wanrong had been convinced by his earnest lecture.
“Come, let’s add each other back on WeChat.”
Tong Zishan extended his phone, placing it in front of Gu Wanrong.
“There’s no need.” Gu Wanrong suppressed the urge to roll her eyes and gently spun the turntable of the table, sending his phone back to him.
Gu Wanrong looked out the window with a calm composure, listening to the adults’ conversation without giving Tong Zishan a shred of attention.
Losing face because of Gu Wanrong, Tong Zishan became somewhat exasperated, but for some reason, he didn’t explode immediately. With a cold face, he pulled his phone from the table and put it back in his pocket.
“Pfft.”
“Heehee.”
The two mimicking Tong Zishan saw this and shared another secret smile.
At this time, the servers at Shiweiju pushed open the private room door and began serving dishes one after another.
Gu Wanrong moved her chopsticks, silently eating the food in her bowl, her ears pricked to listen to the conversation between Si Yeye and Si Popo at the main table.
“With one look, I could tell what the situation was with the rock layers.” Si Yeye was excitedly talking about past events. “It’s different from City C, but I adapted quickly.”
“The difference is definitely large; we have many mountains here.” Er Yeye took a sip of white liquor and spoke in a booming voice. “When I was a teenager, I’d run far away before dawn to carry stones on my back.”
“Second Brother, you weren’t good enough. I remember Eldest Brother would run two trips back and still work the fields, while you only did one trip and came back.”
“Eldest Brother was always so capable. When I first got married, if it hadn’t been for Eldest Brother giving me a hand, sigh.” Si Yeye sighed as he spoke. “Later, I left City C and couldn’t return for decades.”
Si Popo nodded in agreement.
Gu Wanrong wanted to continue listening to what they had to say.
“Factory Manager Liang!”
Tong Zishan shouted loudly, drawing everyone’s attention.
One side of their private room faced the window, while the other side consisted of several hollowed-out carved windows and a door. Food had been served for a while, and the people who had been drinking felt the heater was too stuffy, so they had opened the windows on both sides and pulled up all the curtains.
People passing by in the hallway outside the room could be seen clearly.
Liang Zhongwei, who had been called out, stopped his pace and looked into the room. “Um… Little Tong?”
“Yes, it’s me.” Tong Zishan gave a fawning smile. “We’re having our reunion dinner today. What a coincidence to meet you here.”
As he spoke, Tong Zishan hurried outside.
“Is that so?” Liang Zhongwei nodded politely, his gaze sweeping through the room. He changed his mind about ending the pleasantries immediately. “I’ll come in and offer New Year’s greetings to the elders.”
“Oh my, how could we let you!” Tong Zishan’s mother was paying close attention to the conversation and was overjoyed to hear this. “Son, hurry and pour a drink for your leader.”
“Pour the white liquor; how can we not be sincere with the elders?”
Liang Zhongwei took the glass Tong Zishan handed over.
“This is my Yao Zuzu, and this is my Fourth Granduncle. He just recently retired from the Railway Bureau and came back to his hometown for the New Year.” Tong Zishan highlighted the introductions for several people.
“Elders, may you have long lives and good health.” After Liang Zhongwei toasted several elders, he turned and came to Gu Wanrong’s table.
He hadn’t had contact with Gu Wanrong in reality, but as a subordinate, how could he not know who his top boss was?
Thus, he recognized at a glance that Gu Wanrong was the Chairman of the group that owned Xiyuanlai, which his food processing plant belonged to.
To avoid appearing too obviously sycophantic, he quickly toasted several of Gu Wanrong’s elders before immediately coming to Gu Wanrong’s table.
Tong Zishan thought Liang Zhongwei was specifically giving him face, making him look exceptionally prideful and arrogant.
“Gu Wanrong, why are you still sitting? Hurry and toast Factory Manager Liang!” Tong Zishan’s previous anger from Gu Wanrong blocking his words found an outlet, his expression filled with a sense of triumph.
“Our Factory Manager Liang manages all the food processing plants of the company in City C!”
How could Liang Zhongwei have imagined that Chairman Gu received this kind of treatment at home? He simply had no time to stop Tong Zishan from saying those arrogant and rude words.
Cold sweat was about to drip down.
Gu Wanrong looked at Tong Zishan expressionlessly. Under everyone’s gaze, she slowly stood up, raising her glass with a fake smile.
“Factory Manager Liang, I…”
Liang Zhongwei snapped back to his senses and immediately interrupted the next second, “How could I let you toast me! I’ll penalize myself with a drink, penalize myself!”
He snatched the bottle Tong Zishan was holding, filled his glass with a splashing sound, and tilted his head back to drain it in one go.
“Chairman Gu, Happy New Year. To meet you here is truly fate.” After one glass, Liang Zhongwei spoke with a smile and downed another glass.
“If you don’t drink, then don’t drink. I’ll drink for you.”
Gu Wanrong chuckled and said, “Fine.”
She then slammed the glass heavily onto the table, causing the liquor inside to slosh out, spilling more than half the glass.
“You brat, where are your manners!” Er Yeye’s face was filled with indignation as he scolded her loudly. “It’s because my brother and the others died early, otherwise how could they have raised you to be so unrefined and ill-bred!”
Liang Zhongwei gave a cold look toward Tong Zishan, who was stunned by the scene before him, his face red and filled with confusion. “Cough, cough!”
“I don’t wear your clothes, and I don’t eat your rice. It’s not your place to judge me!” Gu Wanrong’s eyes flashed with disgust as she spoke coldly.
“You!” Er Yeye hadn’t expected that Gu Wanrong, who usually had an honest personality that couldn’t squeeze out a fart even when beaten with a stick, would dare to directly talk back to him in front of everyone.
He wanted to say more, but Liang Zhongwei was coughing incessantly.
“What you said is wrong. I’m still counting on Chairman Gu for my livelihood!” Liang Zhongwei said, inwardly crying out in bitterness.
You damn “Child’s Urine” (Tong Zishan), where did your sycophantic energy go when I was winking at you? He had originally wanted to use this opportunity to suck up to Chairman Gu, but he hadn’t expected it to turn into this situation.
Everyone in the room looked at each other. The meaning behind Liang Zhongwei’s words was self-evident.
“Alright, sit down and eat your meal.” Yao Zuzu broke the awkward silence, waving her hand at Er Yeye.
